Here's our pooch Jessie. She's just under three years old now,, still acts like a pup, and of course having me as her dad,, she has no real manners/training .
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
She rides in the car extremely well, she likes to lay with her head on the centre consol. It must be uncomfortable for her being in a harness and straining against it  But she loves to be close :D
She just loves the cat Tara too. She forgets how big she is, and just flattens her. Both she and the cat have the best personalities, and a totally loving nature's.

It is slowly curling, but no-where near as much as I have seen some others.
When he is stalking something (the cat  ) it will go straight out.

I always struggle when these threads come up because they make me miss my four legged friends from years past.
This picture makes me teary just looking at it. Our loyal, handsome rescue dog named Rusty (on left) joined us when he was about 5. He was terribly maladjusted and nearly didn't make it out of the RSPCA. He'd lived with an old man who had to give him up before we met him. Rusty been in the animal hospital for weeks with severely upset tummy and I think the only reason he wasn't put to sleep was the vets suspected it was just anxiety causing it. He was afraid of floors with textures, didn't know about being in cars and had all the signs of a dog who had been beaten. It took 2 years of love for him to trust us completely and we enjoyed just over 10 more years with him. He left us suddenly at the end of January this year. His little spotty friend (Clover) is now the centre of our world but I miss Rusty every single day.
These creatures make such a mark on our lives. They never seem to stay long enough but I'm so glad we had him for so long.

yeah iwish i knew who it was that did it. he still has some fear related issues even now. talk loud near him and he yelps/cowers. poor boy. and arthritis has gotten nasty in that leg that was broken. he also has an autoimmune disease, pays to take your dog to the vet if any wounds do not heal! his nose was just a big sore after a month of not going away we went the vet and that is how we discovered the auto immune disease! so hes basically on steroids now! for the rest of his life.

A bit of a story,
When living in port moresby, I decided I needed a dog, went to the pound, came home with two ! Rotties, their previous owner had been deported for gunrunning, drugs& prostitution, not him , the girls. Then a friend left and I got his boxer, so I would drive around, windows down, park the car with two Rotties and the boxer hanging out the windows, no one ever hijacked me or tried to steal the car:p
Anyhow, Zeus in post 1 looks the smartest and has the pointless ears,

Here's Yuki, he's an Australian Shepherd.
Just returned from a trip to Cape York, plenty of excellent places to camp that aren't in national parks so bringing your furry friend along is no problem at all.

that happened over a year ago.. and I still find bits of that crud over the yard..
And lay off the old falcon; that was my ebay bought sight unseen car (had to sell my beloved RTV ute after domestic disturbance left me paying the exés loans as well as my own for over a year). That fugly old green black thing was a perfect work runabout and I'd be a bit better off financially if I'd kept her instead of getting another Disco (even if she had absolutely, no personality, whatsoever).
But, love my disco! (though seem to be developing a requirement for a ute again lol)

Best. Thread. Ever!
I've enjoyed looking at everyones dogs.. and I'm not ashamed to say that I even shed a couple of tears when I came to the pics of best friends who have passed on..
I have two fur kids.. both spoilt rotten but loyal to the core..
'Arthur' (our Blue boy) is Cattle cross Border collie and far too smart for his own good.. and 'Abbey' (our red bitch) is we presume cattle crossed with maybe staffie.. (she was a rescue dog so history unknown) and she's about as stoopid as Arthur is smart but we love them both to bits!

You generally only need your neighbours approval. If you get on fine with them, it shouldn't be a problem.
EDIT - looks like you need to fill out this form and cough up $70 as well. Bendigo Shire - Keeping of Animals Application

And then we have the wife's dog Jess. The only reason to fear her is bee in lick to death or drowning in her drool at meal time.

Love them both!

I saw the post about Border Collie/Corgie Cross. My old mate (about 12 years old I think) used to be called 'Sawn Off' by the shearers and we had a doggy door cut at the bottom of the yards, which got a few odd looks. BUT he would fill a pen in half the time of the kelpies at the end of the day. He goes every where, ute, boat bike and he loves the kids. And by the way, he's called 'Dog'. A bloke asked me once about the simple name and I told him I had a lot on that day and the dog answers to it, so that will do!

Here's out little Molly dog at the vet poor little bugger got desexed 2 days later we were watching tv and the dogs were laying around she starts shaking and just acting really out of sorts I said maybe just the cold weather my partner said no she's got something wrong. Took her for an hour drive to the vets at 10pm night call out after 2 nights sleep over turns out she had a blood infection from coming on heat for the first time and it was just the antiseptic of getting desexed that quelled it for a couple of days, thank god we took he when we did otherwise she would have died that night the get said it's pretty deadly. $1100 later but not to worry she's a great little trooper.

If she does that to the dog.. whats to stop her doing it to you!! :p
Leila should calm down; not sure what you are feeding her, but it is likely to be quite different from the pound/shelter and it'll take her guts a couple days to get used to it
She looks like a close relative to my white eyed feral

Thought I might post the dogs digs too;
their kennel (double sized, no inner wall because they like to share, double doors opposite ends so if one is in the poops, she can't block out the other. Tilt back lid for cleaining, roof iron matching leftover from my house, fully insulated with sisilation and wool bats, plus some refrigerative panelling - and outer of Spotted Gum floorboards (cost me a bit to build lol)

1976_michelle

Made it. I wanted to have a gable roof but I couldn't quite figure out to have it gable, AND swing open so had to go skillion instead. The spotted gum flooring was from a recycle centre here. I had also intended to have it on big castor wheels for easy movement around the yard, but really shoulda done that before I loaded up with the rest of the build :/ Will be fun to tip over now and try to fit them on...
Now I see photos of double storey kennels, and big verandahs... and I have kennel envy lol

I guess time will heal but it's blood hard healing stage. Cheers mate.

Just talking last night, over breeds you don't see around, or very rarely, Basset Hound, Beagle , Red Setter, Afgan, Doberman, is it all fashion?
Mind you Red Cattle dogs still rock, :p

I reckon fashion.
There used to be a shoe in pommy land called a "Hush Puppy" (for some obscure reason) , and they used a Basset Hound to advertise it, I'm pretty sure there was also one used to advertise a brand of dog food in a foil packet. They were all over the place(60's/70's). My Fathers mate had one who had a good go at my Easter Egg once (the dog not the mate). I'm still traumatised by the event.
Wouldn't like to go looking for ticks on a Red Setter or an Afghan(hound).

My dogs yesterday. The white one Ted I think will not be much longer of this world :( he has an auto inmune disease and has to be on meds for rest of his life. But now hes started licking his back legs that he keeps making nasty wounds :( he has arthritis from being beaten as a 9 month old. (Broken leg in a couple places. I rescued him then as friend worked at vets that he wss dumped at hes 8 in jan) but he cannot be on pain stuff as cant mix with the meds abd he cannot be on those. So seeing what else can do safety to manage pain :( my other dog is the rottyx ridgy who will be 10 in jan! Time flies!8275382755

Hes a mareema chuck. Definitely not a golden retriever. He's currently wearing a bucket so he leaves bandaged hind legs alone until next week when he sees a specialist. Unsure what happens afterwards. Guess depends what he has. Cushings was mentioned today. But we will see. I hope what ever it is we can manage it. If not which like vet says feel like fighting a loosing battle :( but if I cannot keep him comfy ill say goodbye. Really hope not though :(

my 9 year old wheaten and white border collie has allergies and has cost me a fortune in Vet bills, added up what Pet insurance would have cost from a pup. . about the same as the vet bills not including and excess payed(based on the 10pw quote I was given), (that's not including regular vet checkups and things, or medication/special foods he needs)
im looking into Pet insurance for the new Pup though, need to get myself some of that health insurance one day too!

That's still over $350 a year, and don't forget - the insurance cover drops to accident only when the dog turns around 6 depending on breed, so when your best friend needs a new hip when they're 12, the insurance companies won't be there for you. It's a rip off IMO. It has been discussed in depth on another thread.
If you have as many animals as us, that would cost thousands a year. We're on a first name basis with out Vet, and although they don't run accounts, when a big bill pops up from time to time, they are happy for us to pay it off. Just part of the fun of pet ownership. :)

Fair enough. My mum's dog is 12 though and her insurance company still paid for his operation of $4k which wasn't an emergency. It was a back operation. I don't have it for our dog at the moment but have considered it after my old dog needed two cruciate operations at $3.5k a pop when he was 5. I could only afford one leg but at least he could still motor around ;). His name was Gus, hence my forum name.

Love those GSP's,my parents bred them when i was i kid. They are one of the few dogs that could catch hares.Lots of energy, wonderful companions.
They do seem to be longer in the legs these days though.
We nearly bought one last time we were looking for a dog,but wanted a breed that was smaller, ended up with a Springer.
In fact a Springer head looks very similar to a GSP,and they also have that hunting instinct, and lots of energy.
But she has no hope with hares, hasn't got the speed.Birds are more her go,quail, ducks, etc.
relatively normal
24th September 2014, 08:33 PM
We chose the GSP's purely for their temprement and they dont seem to suffer from the evolutionary faults bred into other breeds e.g. pugs and boxers bred with snub noses so have trouble breathing, german shepards with low hips causes arthritis etc
Bull breeds like rotweilers (cute), dobermans (gorgeous) and staffs (my last dog) seem to be brilliant family dogs, very loyal but not too social with other dogs.
labradors are brilliant dogs too but seem to pile on the weight easy in older age, beagles and dalmations are just mental and mostly very difficult to train. its the wrong climate for huskeys or and cold climate dogs.

love great danes, what colour is yours? looks like a blue merle but super super dark. i grew up with old english sheep dogs, then mum and dad got into the danes, and had 4 in the family :) 3 fawns, and 1 blue merle. all females. all rescues too. and my next dog when both of mine eventually pass to rainbow bridge will be a harliquin i think. i cannot spell it today LOL. yours is stunning :)

Huckleberry is merle (blue), which means even though he has a top pedigree and comes from one of the longest standing Great Dane breeder in NSW, he cannot be shown. He has a blue undercoat with black markings and hence has a very shiny coat.
Our last Dane was blue and from the same breeder but 20 years ago. Hilda the breeder has a number of Harlequin breeders. Her website is www.hildydanekennels.com.au (http://www.hildydanekennels.com.au) cost is significant though from between $1,500 and $2,000 for a puppy.
There is also www.greatdanerescue.com.au (http://www.hildydanekennels.com.au/harleq2.html) who rescue Dane's and rehome then if you prefer to go down that route.

Can't show a merle? Thats strange, especially in this day and age where parentage can be verified with genetic testing (eg if they were suspecting the colour came in impurely)

I have been away from home with work for the last couple of weeks and in a call to Nan the other night, she tells me my puppy is at the vets. Evidently a couple of mornings ago, Nan went to fed our hounds and Annie (red stumpy tail) could barely walk and was frothing at the mouth. A quick trip down to the vets where they checked her (my dog, not the wife :D ) for ticks and bites. They thought she may have giving a canetoad a bit of a chew, so my Son searched the yard for chewed up bits of toad, nothing. They shaved her to do a complete check for paralysis ticks, nothing. This left spider/snake bites. There is a new housing complex across the road and they have disturbed lots of things so they thought maybe a wriggly. The Vet made the call to give antivenom for snake bite. Within half an hour, things had improved heaps, so a couple of nights at the vet on a drip and some antibiotics I have my puppy back home, still very weak and slow but on the mend. :)
She seems to be making the most of being inside for a couple of days :D

Estimate says $1400.00. Land rover will be taking a back seat now for a few months. Snoopys worth every cent he costs me. Love him to bits. Hes all i have in this world.

hope your snoopy gets better soon, my big fella Frodo is always a bit ill, he has so many allergies and looks as if he has cancer now too, apparently the treatment is more pain then letting him just chug along (doesn't seem to bother him to much, just he is getting slower and sleeping more, few big lumps forming and such though) he is only 9 years old too, its hard when I also have my other little one who is barley 8 months old, Dax.
my two now: (Frodo being the wheaten and white boy, and Dax the blue merle girl)

I think you have made the right decision about Frodo. IMHO quality of life is pretty much on top of the list and I do believe he would let you know otherwise. He does look content :).
67hardtop
3rd March 2015, 11:34 AM
Yes Frodo looks content. My neighbours bluey is 15 yrs old with cancerous lumps on her, shes deaf and almost blind but shes still happy. Too old for treatment they said. She has a good life and is well looked after. Snoopy chewed his pain relief bandage off overnight, little bugger. He had a couple laps at his water tho this morning. Still not eating yet. Plenty "stored" energy left still:D hes just lying here on my lap "protecting" me:thumbup:
