$21,000.00 is it just me, or is that waaaaaay to much I am in cairns though.
so I should not be surprised.i cant believe its 10 grand to fit a motor
could this price be right cheers all.

That is a beyond retarded amount to be quoted even when taking into account modifications, pitfalls, engineering costs.

Sounds like they gave you a "**** off" quote - they dont want the job...

I think they are for real, they went to a great length to try for a deal, to do the job im going to make a couple of enquires tomorrow. Would of done it today but im still in shock cheers.

For those of you that can "do things yourself" (I'm hopeless), and there are many very clever & resourceful people on here, it might sound like a lot of money, and it probably is.
However, "ya gets what ya pays for", and if this "conversion" was beautifully carried out to O.E. standards, properly & legally engineered, with everything "working properly", then it might be able to be justified.
Only thing I'd say is that the recipient vehicle would wanna be in very good condition to justify this expense, and also, are there any other engines around that would be preferable?

Mudder, I believe these blokes in NZ are the agents for these engines in our area.
Forward Spec (http://www.forward-specialties.co.nz)
Flick them an email and see what they could deliver one for. That would give you another starting point for your calculations.

Realistically for the almost the same output just fit one of the VNT kits with that use the same GT2256 turbo that the 2.8 uses and same yourself 19K.
Even if you need an engine rebuild it will still cost less than 10K all up.

There was a guy in Vic importing and selling them.
There was a guy on this forum doing same.

When I needed parts for my rebuild, I tried Aus, NZ, USA, UK, Germany and Sth America.

Only 2 places had or could supply parts, in the end it was M&D in the UK.

If I had my time over, I would not do the 2.8Tgv swap.

What we need is a quote from a builder on what 12K would get you with the Tdi,Turner Eng would return something nice with change, with the other 10K Ashcrofts would give you a killer powertrain and Ultimate a nice suspension set-up. Pat

Or a 9~10k perentie and spend 10k on it.

Or buy a good td5. Get a few better things than just a engine. .

21k + the sale price of the 110 will get you a Puma...

Or as you say, $10k perentie, $5k turbo and PAS and swap the goood bits over (and maybe body) from the 110.

thanks for all the input as usual always a great forum with so many willing to share there knowledge.
think I will go the 300 rebuild with a few mild extras east coast engineering at Nambour on the sunshine coast have a good reputation , already got larger intercooler and full maxi drive setup. engine is standard except for a very slight fuel tweak.
got a couple of oil leaks rear main and maybe t seal, rear main started leaking 50,000ks ago after clutch was done think he used a cheap seal .
had the defender about 9 years never missed a service. know the previous owner who had it from new I can honestly say this vehicle has never broken down had a few issues but always started first go.
leaves the 2001 td5 disco I had for dead in the reliability stakes, but that one never actually stoped just had a lot of lights on when I sold it.
thanks again cheers

What about getting a motor from turners and just getting it installed?

At $22k your getting into chev tdv8 territory.:p This along with other options like 3.2 puma, tdv6 LR (bell in uk has done these)or a turbo Isuzu and a lot of soundproofing.:D go up a bit and you could do a dura max 6.6 tdi with an Allison auto like one of the other defender owners did. 1000nm may be a bit much for a standard tranny.:D

As an option you could look at the 300tdi 2.8 stroker kits on ebay.uk if your going the full rebuild, i have no experience with them but its another option if your engine is going to need reboring and crank grinding.

I'd take a VM diesel before ever touching a chev 6.2/6.5 V8 diesel.

4BD1T (factory turbo model) is similar NVH to the 300tdi.

Buy a complete and registerable Perentie 6x6, swap over the engine, box and PAS, add Intercooler and boost away.
Sell the rest for all up change over cost of probably $3K.
Yes the 4BD1T is heavier.
