View Full Version : Toilets on the Canning

On a recent trip on the southern [well 33 south ] section of the Canning stock route we were pleased to note that the industrious souls from trackcare WA have installed several elevated toilets at various points along the way. We were disappointed to find all the ones we looked in were full. There were instructions on how to empty but you needed a tow bar for the trailers and to dig a big hole to burn and bury. We had no tow bars and not fit enough to dig a big enough hole in hard ground, so the problem remains. So if you are going on the Canning you may need to take a tow bar rubber gloves and a big shovel ?

... not fit enough to dig a big enough hole in hard ground, ...

???

We had no problems digging holes anywhere along the canning. Even the OAPs in our group.

We avoided the built toilets for similar reasons. A single use toilet you dig yourself smells a lot better and has a better view.

I used to work for the government using the canning as an access route for geological mapping work. toilets on the stock route is not something I would have ever thought to appear. to me lts a bit of a frontere although since my time there, im sure tourism has had an impact. but toilets.... next they will have service stations and maccas.

Toilets at durba springs is a good idea though due to the camp area, bit of a hike to find privacy there

The facilities are maintained by the traditional owners. There must have been a bit of a mess out there, to warrant toilets. Perhaps an indication of the numbers travelling the stock route now. Went down the gunbarrel in the eighties, not many there then. Giles had toilets, but the main attraction was the bar, Bob :D

It is pretty simple.

Dig hole.
Excrete and wipe.
Burn used dunny paper.
Backfill hole.

Several weeks of booze ......................

I'd need a bloody tandem trailer. :p

Much easier to just carry enough for a few nights, and buy more along the way. ;)

Yep that is the key ***burn*** your toilet paper after use, animals will otherwise dig it up and it blows all over the place. Even in May there was a fair bit of toilet paper around Cape York, i can't imagine what it's like towards the end of the dry. I can imagine it would be a bit of a downer seeing toilet paper in a remote section of the CSR...!

Burning it also keeps the flies away while you cover up the hole you dug.

There are chemicals on the market now, that are bio-degradable. And, there is toilet paper designed to break down. I can't remember the name, there is a portable toilet chemical now, where you can safely dispose of the waste in a hole in the ground. The other alternative, is disposing of the waste at dedicated disposal points, usually at caravan parks, & some boat ramps. Bob

My porta potti holds two or even three weeks of crap easy. Number 1's in the bush, number 2's in the potti. Easy;). And you don't leave campsites stinking like **** and animals don't have anything to dig up. Burn or carry out your loo paper and it's like you were never there.

IMHO you should never **** in a hole in the ground in a bush environment. There is just no need these days. I reckon you are just being plain lazy if you do. Again, my opinion so if you don't agree that's fine. But I may call you a ****! :D

It's easiest to empty them into the screw opening thing on the drain pipe of the toilet on the outside of the house. The outlet fits in nice and snug with less chance of 'slop' or 'spashback'. If you empty into a toilet itself it's easier to get poo on you.

It's the main clean out point on the outside of the house like in this photo:

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/791.jpg

But that's at home. There are thousands of RV dump points all round Oz.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/792.jpg

And they generally have a hose incase you get splashed. But you rarely if ever get splashed at all if you take your time. The screw on outlet pipe to drain the porta potti tank has a screw on cap at each end with a rubber seal - so no smell. The good biodegradable chemicals really take the smell out of it too. So the drain pipe really just smells like toilet air freshener, not poo.

This thread is about the canning, for those who have not done it, you are very limited to what you can carry as you need two weeks of supplies, fuel, water, food etc...not many camper trailers and caravans on the canning, and not many dump points either, unless you count your own personal dump point ;)

Another thing I noticed on the Canning is the 44 gallon drums left around the place, not so much the drums themselves, guess they'll eventually rust away like the car bodies, but people seem to think they're rubbish bins, the amount of rubbish left in them was truly sad. Do they think the council will be through next week to empty them?

The point is, you don't need a dump point with the new bio degradable chemicals. It is quite safe to deposit the contents of the bottom tank along the way.[ at least that was told to me by the gentleman selling the product] Even the paper degrades down . A porta potti weighs a couple of kilos, best fitted in a roof top basket, and you have to factor in the water used. If there is room, a valuable addition to your camping gear, I think, Bob

True bob, but my point is, do you have room for something that's not actually a necessity. Water, food, fuel are a bit more important on that track, I know we had no room, nore did any of the other cars for a makeshift toilet.
I saw no evidence of toilet paper and rubbish on the canning, yes a lot of 44's, and the only ones we came across with rubbish in them was at well 33, which are actual bins that get emptied by the nearby community..
Well 6 is building a self composting toilet from memory, it already has the trailer under the long drop job.:)

Since we are talking ****, Porta Potti is a generic term and a brand, like Hoover.

Is the Porta Potti the best brand to purchase, or are there better alternatives.

I would hate to buy a crap brand and end up in the ****.

Hey djam - that's really similar to the one we got from the USA for our MAN Truck build.

Nature's Head Composting Toilets: Saving Our Water for Tomorrow (http://natureshead.net/)

Does it have any odors at all? How long can you travel for before it needs emptying? Is it a drama to empty?

Thanks

Yes they are closely related to the Natures Head
They will go for about 60 craps

Must admit I was cynical but they don't smell at all and the soil that you empty out isn't at all unpleasant.

If anyone needs one I have a Dometic VT2500 Vacuum Toilet that I removed from the Motorhome sadly I was foolish enough to spend $750 on it before I pulled it out.

I have a Thetford. Does the job, no complaints so far. We have a popup tent [ shower tent] we use for privacy, we also use the Thetford at home when we have a do, use it as an outside toilet. Possibly the only criticism is it's a bit close too the ground for tall people, consideration for some kind of stand/ couple of logs etc., could be useful, Bob

Um, they've been around since the 1960's. I take it you drive a series eh? :D

And Thetford make the brand PortaPotti. They are the original and best IMHO. They don't leak and the flush works brilliantly. They also have a non stick bowl surface. Which is important. Trust me :)

Damien, your statement "that's not actually a necessity" will come back to bite you in years to come.
I was talking to 2 Rangers in a South Coast NP about the problem of toilet paper streamers all over the place, even under 50m from a perfectly good drop toilet.
They said that once the 3 drop toilets in this park were full they were not going to be replaced, I said that would create more ****ty streamers than now.
They said if people could not take their **** and toilet paper back out of the park with them then the parks would have to be closed as they didn't have the resources to clean up after these pigs that leave their crap all over the place.
So Damien when you see your local NP closed to 4WD's and Campers because people don't bring there own toilets and take out their crap with them you will realise it is a Necessity, NOW not later after the parks are closed.
Before I got my Camper trailer I used to carry all my gear and my Porta-Potti in the back of my Disco 1, you just have to plan your loading a lot better and don't take anything you don't need, Regards Frank.

Once again frank, I'm not talking about a national park on the south coast, I am talking the canning stock route, where you need to carry everything to last for the two week jaunt. This thread is about toilets on the canning.
I never saw any signs of toilet paper on the track when I did it a few weeks ago.
