Some idiot, not naming names so as to protect the guilty, reversed out of a tight spot in a creek bed into the overhanging bough of a big red gum.
Stupidly I didn't check upwards to see if my way was clear, and I now have a big dent on the curved part of the tailgate.

Has anyone had such damage repaired before? Is this a complete tailgate replacement?

Don't know the answer to that one, but I've often thought there should be reversing sensors for low objects, like garage doors and tree branches.

Worth taking to a dent guy, or even getting a mobile guy out to look over it. Have seen something similar pulled out of a cant rail, and you'd never know and reasonable cost. Something like that might indeed pull out, shame it'll need paint too. Best of luck.

Pretty sure that top tailgate is aluminium, so would be a pain to get right.
Worth giving one of those Dentmaster type guys a call though.

Don't feel bad, I managed to back into the only tree in a car park that had about 50 metres either side of clear space. I blame the dog who I had just taken to puppy training. He barked, I looked and bang. Not happy at the time. Fortunately it was in my pre Disco Pajero which was about 13 years old. Luckily my insurance isn't affected by claims. Felt like an idiot though.

Indeed. I did it doing Skytrek in the Flinders Ranges. It was a blast. This little incident the only glitch in an otherwise spectacular drive.

I have a nice scrape / dent down one of my quarter panels from a similar misadventure ... three point turn on a tight downhill corner with a nasty drop off ... scrape on low hanging tree branch ... oh well, wear it with pride I say until you could be bothered fixing it (or thats my theory anyway, as mine is white my scrape / dent is very hard to see in most light) !
