Disco Mud flaps

Hi All,

We are planning a trip up north of WA in the new bus with the camper trailer.

As we have a large nose cone on the front of the camper trailer (see pic) we don't have a stone guard.

A couple of friends that have been to Karajini (one of the planned stops) have told us they broke rear lights on the car from stones bouncing back off the camper.

So my thought is to get rid of any stones making to the camper by a large set of rubber mud flaps that run past the wheel well on both sides.

Question is - are there any commercially available that are an easy install and remove item?

Way back when we used to make them up for the rally cars but these days in the weight saving game on race cars we don't run any flaps.

Christian can make one up for your camper, they work really well, very easy to get on and off cost is around $550 not cheap but a lot cheaper than replacing a rear window and trying to get one when your out in the sticks!

I use on when towing our caravan.

The stone stomper is a rubber truck mesh with elastic sewn in seams it mounts to the front underside of the van or trailer with d-shackles and clips to a bar fitted off the back of the tow bar/ball.

Stone stomper works a treat. Easy to fit and remove and does exactly what it was designed to do!:D

Another alternative is the Rock Tamers. They attach to your tow hitch and are easily removable when not required.

After looking at all he options for extra mud flaps/stone protection the main problem in my opionun is finding a suitable mounting point. With the mitch hitch attaching anything to it is difficult and or something to trip over.
After much searching around, I found some mounting points underneath the back.
Next to and above the rear mufflers there is a body mounting bracket welded to the chassis with holes in it By making up an "L" shaped bracket which is bolted to the body mount (2 bolts). Then attached the flaps made from a truck mud flap cut in 2 verticully and then shaped to go around the muffler and body moulding. Its out of the way and can be taken off.

Mud flaps across the back, whilst better than nothing, have in my experience and observation (do a lot of Km out on the dirt) do very little to prevent damage.

The stones still get around the flaps and do the damage.

The versions using "shade cloth" that form a horizontal deflector work magnificently.

The design of your trailer leaves very little areas where rocks can hit and bounce forward.......they would more than likely be directed away from the camper at an angle. You will still have a lot of stone chips

If I tour with my trailer I will go with stone stomper...or a home made version of it.

Rock Tamers are better than nothing but rocks will still fly up between them. I have a set & still get stone chips in the tailgate.
had a bloke in at work with the Stone Stomper things & he swore by them.
