I dropped in to Minto this morning to have a look at a few lots. Facing me as I walked in the door was this monster - the photos just don't do it justice!

What a beast! Even comes turbo. Now I want to know what snorkel that is. Does it look like a Mantec?

Man that thing looks awesome.

I saw it when it was been worked on at KLR Automotive. It looks pretty good. That was the one I helped with the fitting of the ignition lock (see another thread).

Yes, a nice piece of work.
I had been making some plans for something almost exactly like this. ah well pipped at the post...
Some nice details (see attached) like the use of another ROPS at the rear for extra safety and almost mil spec. Naturally, a very nice turbo install.
Only just thought now, "why didn't I get a photo of the Turbo PNs?!" so don't ask.

i wonder if the seatbelts in the back could be approved???

i would say the seatbelts could be. they have side seats in older defers and in troopies anyway.

The AFM Perentie has been engineered to seat 10.

So was it a wreck? Has the chassis been lengthened or was this some special one off chassis?

Thanks,

Wheels are the Terrafirma alloys, tyres are BFG Mud Terrain KM2s in 255/85r16 by the looks.

Minto is a suburb of SW Sydney; it is where Australian Frontline Machinery (AFM) - the company formed to dispose of the ADF's current flock of vehicles - has its HQ. The other vehicles in the photos are for sale; most of the folks in this corner of the forum already own one (at least).

This website will fill you in:

https://www.australianfrontlinemachinery.com.au

If you are interested in getting one, I highly recommend you pick up a buyer's guide from here too:

Anyone know if it lives at Minto? Or just there on inspection days?

Picking up a trailer tomorrow. Would love to have a look at it. Particularly the rear seat setup.

Hey you couldn't grab me a trailer and send it over to NZ? :D

Hmm. I did read somewhere that No. 5 trailers float, due to watertight tubs.

Not sure if prevailing wind & current would send it your way if I dropped it in the Pacific.

Speaking of trailer logistics, as the cheapest ones are ex Darwin, would one be able to daisy chain a few together behind a Perentie and tow them home from NT, given a suitable MC truck license?

Result of today's enquiries @ Minto:

1. Yes, it's here.
2. No, you may not enter showroom outside of inspection days to look at it.
3. All work was performed by KLR. They will be able to assist with your enquiries re specific mods.
4. We will post some more photos of it on teh internets soon.
5. Your trailer is outside. Please leave now. :)

Nice blokes. They were most polite in their refusal of my request. Clearly access to warehouse is heavily restricted. I wonder what they do in there between auctions.

G'Day DBT.
The whole shed is their workshop.
For Auctions, they push everything out except the sale vehicles and clear the space.

what's making it capable over and above any other 110? i.e. does it have lockers

Katiebee

Above any other 110 or above any other Perentie?
I would suggest that any Isuzu powered 110 is more capable than a Defender.

umm, what makes it more capable? both have CDL, coils, departure/approach angles

I drove army 110 for years and buggered if I can see what makes them more capable than my current 300tdi defender........not unless I'm missing something

The 4x4 Perentie has a worse departure angle than a Defender. Approach angle is in favour of a standard bumper bar too.
Available torque and gearing counts for a bit but I think some people are wearing rose tinted glasses... (Okay I haven't owned a Defender but do drive with many owners with from stock standard to fairly wild modded Defenders)

Heh. Intra-Landie rivalry flare up. LOL.

What makes this one more capable than a stock Perentie is the turbo (on road capability), larger tyres, sliders (off road capabiliy), compliant rear seats (hauling mates / kids / broken down Tojo hithchiker capability), overall good looks (Defender owner anxiety generating capability).

Ok, the last one was a dig, but you get the idea?:p

Edit: it also demonstrates that Perentie owners can spend too much on mods, just like Defender owners. :D

I think what AFM have shown here is that you can build a very low km perentie to a closer to defender standard in terms of looks and on road performance for a reasonable price outcome when compared to the defender. If you can find a defender with under 50000km that comes close to the final bill for this one you are doing pretty well

4wdindustries, they are selling them but can't find it on there web page. Just search ebay ,defender grill, and it'll come up from memory under $200.
There good to deal with I've bought other gear from them.

Thanks for that.

Edit: Looks like they must have custom cut out for the bonnet release. Bugger.

Because of the spare tyre under the back right?? How much worse is it actually:confused:

No, tyre is underneath as you say, think about extended rear cross member, jerry can holders, helicopter lifts brackets etc

As Scott said.
The normal 110 chassis ends where the body does. A 4x4 Perentie chassis keeps going...and has bits bolted to it.
Though a civvy 110 with a towbar can't be much better or may be worse.

Yes. Same body, different rear crossmember hence different departure angle.

Ex army 110 4x4 Perentie..
Thanks...is the differences in departure angles and Approach angles noticeable in the bush???
Compared to a 110, 130 Defender..

Or nothing to worry about:confused:

If you are so bloody worried about angles then cut the lift points off and remove your bull bar and pintle...

... Oh wait, you do not even own a Perentie.

Also, you already know the departure/approach angles! (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/general-chat/192536-ex-army-110-differences-post2226940.html#post2226940)

Your posts are still useless spam that could be answered by simply googling.

At a guess, I would say they got Robco to make a new one in their preferred colour?

This (http://www.nolanuda.com.au/products/wct-dx12/) is the canvas Robco use for Perentie canopies.

Available in 31 flavours!

Ok not quite. But a few flavours.

Look in the Tasmanian trip reports section for a post by brendanm. I followed a twin locked 3" lifted 130 on 35" tyres and a twin locked, MD Portal axled 130 also on 35" tyres, in my stock standard 110 Perentie with XZL pizzza cutters. We did some fairly interesting tracks with technical rock gardens and some good old fashioned puddle ducking. The only thing that really dragged was the diffs...
Fix one of your bloody zooks up and wheel the crap out of it, then so you'll have some experience to answer your basic questions.
