I thought I might try a thread on pics of aircraft that AULRO members have taken. The question is, should it be in Flight or Camera Corner?
To start it off, here's a pic I took in 1964 when I was 16. I was using a borrowed camera. The film was Kodachrome.
It was when the aircraft participating in the RM Ansett Air Race from Brisbane to Adelaide via Sydney and Melbourne were assembling at Archerfield Aerodrome in Brisbane.

Some of the aircraft lined up for the RM Ansett Air Race of 1964 - camera unknown (a borrowed one) but the film was Kodachrome. (For non-Australians, Reg Ansett started his airline in 1935. I have a slide here of his first aeroplane and I'll try to find it.) .

The second pic is of three Australian Victa AirTourer aircraft made by a lawn mower manufacturer, Victa (the inventors of the rotary mower now used world-wide). These were a popular training aircraft and a lot survive today. Note the old Archerfield control tower.

Auster G-AIJT which I learnt to fly in back in 70-74, at the Merlin Flying Club, Rolls-Royce flight test establishment at Hucknall. Also 3 Jodel's & a Tipsy Nipper in this shot:

The club Jodel 1050 Ambassador after a repaint in Merlin Flying Club colours. A nice performing 4 seater with no fuel in rear tank but still cruised at 100+ knots on 100 hp - didn't climb very well:o:

Whilst it's not a particularly significant plane generally, it is a VERY significant plane to some people in the gulf & channel country. Mike Juliet Zulu is the Uniting Church aerial patrol plane for this region and a welcome visitor to many stations. The guy in the photo is the Patrol Padre who has now moved on to another position in the church.
The C182 is a tough unit with heaps of power and a climbing prop. I got to fly her from Cloncurry to Horn Island last September and its performance was surprising after all the pedestrian C172s I had flown before. Built like a brick ****house and I had to consistently trim the nose down on takeoff to prevent it from going vertical.
The second photo is just some nice cloud surfing we did over the northern part of the Cape.

A very rare bird - The 1932 Blackburn B2 at RAF Finningley in 1976 (I think):
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/670.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Merlin%20Flying%20Club/MFC_0004_zpsc4ca27f9.jpg.html)
I should have put this in embarrassment! Hawker Siddeley Chief Test Pilot Don Headley (F4K Phantoms & S2 Buccaneer), and self chief prop swinger at the airshow. A memorable flight from Brough to an RAFA airshow & back the next day:
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/671.jpg (http://s938.photobucket.com/user/jodel1050/media/Merlin%20Flying%20Club/MFC_0005_zps019e1f86.jpg.html)
The B2 was built as a contender for the RAF basic trainer which DeHavilland won with the Tiger Moth. Ahead of its time with an aluminum fuselage.

One of the more interesting aircraft I have seen in my times; the GROB Egret.
This aircraft is a high altitude surveillance aircraft capable of flying at 53000 odd feet altitude, and was photographed at Parafield.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/636.jpg
I once took a photograph of a U2 surveillance aircraft in Saigon back in 1966 but unfortunately my film was confiscated by a big Negro Master Sergeant who told me that what I just saw did not exist in country!
The Dasault Mirage was in my eyes one of the most 'pleasing to the eyes' planes we have ever had in service in the RAAF. Also shot at Parafield Fly In.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/637.jpg
I stumbled upon this Cessna 180 aircraft at Murwillumbah earlier this year and nearly fell over backward on seeing it, as I flew as an observer in this very aircraft more than once back in 1966.
First shot shows it "as was" in December 2013 - I believe it is now stripped down prior to a full rebuild back to 1966 specs.
Second shot shows this aircraft overflying a convoy in 1966. (we only had the two of these Cessnas in SVN in those days. They were later replaced by borrowed American 01E or whatever they were, and eventually the Pilatus Porter.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/635.jpg
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/638.jpg
Also at Murwillumbah I stumbled upon this very early Gypsy moth (DH60), you may note the engine being up the right way with the crankcase to the bottom (as engines should be). This was changed in later development to enhance forward visibility and this with a few other modifications lead to the emergence of the well known Tiger Moth (DH82).

The aerial shot of the P51 was taken from the waist gun position of the B17 in the third photo. The P51 was escorting us on a dangerous daylight mission from Santa Ana to bomb Long Beach Harbour. Same day I got to ride in a B24. WW2 aircrew must have been skinny little guys. I couldn't squeeze through the hatch from the cockpit to the bombardier's position in the nose.

C124 Douglas Globemaster taken at Bien Hoa 1966. A pretty large aircraft for its day although even in 1966 it was starting to show its age.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/08/1110.jpg
The Yanks had an interesting array of aircraft in service in SVN and despite it being well and truly the jet age, the Douglas skyraiders and the good old DH Beaver and Otters did admirable service. I have a shot of a C46 loading up in Saigon somewhere, but I will have to trawl through a lot of shots to find it.
Another interesting transport aircraft was the C123 Providor and the only one I ever travelled in had more bullet holes than metal in the fuselage and it was a wet stormy monsoonal day that particular day. I came out absolutely drenched after a 30 minute flight from Saigon to Vung Tau.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/613.jpg
I am led to believe that these particular aircraft were originally designed as a glider and the engines were put on as an afterthought. I have no idea how true this is.
Last shot is the good old C130 (and an early one at that), my transport back home again. Someone will be able to tell whether it was one of the old "A"s, or one of the brand new, at that time, "E" Model. (I think it was an "A" as the extra fuel tanks were outboard whereas the "E" I think had the tanks between the motors.
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2014/07/614.jpg
By the way I am glad that this is in the aircraft section and not the photography section as my photography leaves a bit to be desired, especially in the 60's!

Have lots of Firebomber photos taken at Greybull Airfield, Wyoming
Converted B24's, Neptunes, Hercs , DC4's and other awesome prop liners
If ever there was a reason to visit USA it would be to go to Greybull WY, and its not even a tourist attraction. Unfortunatly the photos are buried inside a shipping container , not scanned yet. Their junkyard is a treasure trove of ex WW2 and 1950's freighters.

It's hard to believe I took this pic over 50 years ago. I thought the Piper Comanche PA-24-250 was the most beautiful of all the private planes around and built a control line model of it (powered by my trusty Taipan 2.5cc diesel engine).
I still think it's a beautiful aircraft. VH-CDA was first registered in 1960.
Pic taken March 1964 at Archerfield Aerodrome, Brisbane, prior to it flying in the RM Ansett Air Race (before its race no. 30 was applied).

Pretty hard to say what size Storch it was,it was high up and only made one pass over the airstrip. I used a 300mm lens with 2x converter to get this piccy. I waited for it to make another pass, but it flew off.:)

When the A380's were grounded, I managed to come home from Europe on an Airbus 330 delivery flight which was a great experience, Toulouse to Singapore (picked up some freight) and onto Sydney. With a few work mates from the flight planning team, tech crew, 2 engineers and 1 cabin crew it was a restful flight. A330 is quite an impressive aircraft, this one is configured to do the West-East coast flights so doesn't have the business class lie flat sleepers so we used the central seats and put the arm rests up.

I came out absolutely drenched after a 30 minute flight from Saigon to Vung Tau.
http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii115/glenpats/Old%20cars/2C123Provider_zpsb7b0b284.jpg[/IMG
[IMG]http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii115/glenpats/Old%20cars/Transporthome_zpsbc4c9d9e.jpg
By the way I am glad that this is in the aircraft section and not the photography section as my photography leaves a bit to be desired, especially in the 60's!
Regards
Glen
It's an "A" model Glen , easily identified by the 3 blade prop. The "E's" had engine upgrade with 4 blade prop.

They used the Junkers (JU 57??) in the old war movie "Battle of Britain". I love that movie and have a copy on file. I believe the Junkers used in the movie were in the Spanish Airforce until the late 1950's.:D
Ju-52. The most successful of a long line of all metal Junkers transport aircraft from 1913. They were in many respects the German equivalent of the DC3, but came into service a little earlier, and hence retained fixed undercarriage and three engines, instead of retractable and only two. But they were "good enough", and German efforts to replace them never got anywhere - in the same way that 'DC-3 replacements' got nowhere for thirty years after WW2, despite the fact that all the DC-3s in use by then were at least thirty years old.
Ju-52s continued to operate commercially in out of the way places probably into the 1980s.

Well, you learn something new every day. I thought the DC3 was pensioned off years ago.
Most of them have been. The death knell of the DC3 was the Vietnam War. They were used there so heavily that the stockpile of spare parts (especially engines and engine parts) left over from WW2 was so depleted that they were no longer cheap to maintain. Then fuel prices started to skyrocket, and their energy efficiency started to tell against them.
Interestingly, one of the features that contributed most to their longevity was unintended - the alloy used in their structure seems to be virtually immune to fatigue, something that was not even thought about when they were designed.

The attached picture shows the field crew I was in charge of about to depart Observatory Claypan (about 100km NE of Mt Dare) about to depart for Adelaide.
Unfortunately I was not on it, as it turned into an interesting trip - Due to refuel at Leigh Ck, it ran into a dust storm, and short on fuel, and with ADF and HF disrupted by the weather, made a precautionary landing at Mirrikata - in the middle of the Woomera Prohibited Area.
Our party and the aircrew were accommodated by the ADF at the base overnight, and the following day a replacement aircrew was flown in by the operator (Airlines of South Australia), and I understand that the Captain retired that day.
I remained behind and did a central Australian tour.

couple of interesting vehicles there too, those FJ45 Station Wagons are very rare, theres few in USA but only ever seen one here, (and it was probably an Import)? !!
No. The FJ45V wagons were bought by the company in Brisbane, off the shelf. One of them was my company car. I am not surprised that they are very rare. In many respects it was the worst vehicle I have ever had anything to do with, having an incredibly bad ride among other problems. But perhaps a more telling reason why they are rare today is that the bodywork simply fell to bits, starting almost from the showroom door. The rear seat folded itself whenever you hit a bump if it was unoccupied, or often even if it was, door hinges broke away from the body, the floor collapsed, as did the tailgate if you sat on it. For that matter so did the seats after a few months. And the ventilation seemed designed to bring in bulldust, over and above all the lot that came in the ill fitting (because the body flexed) doors and tailgate and the holes in the floor.
Apart from the suspension, the steering, the broken wheel studs, and the carburetter and alternator, it was fairly sound mechanically.
To reiterate, I am not at all surprised to hear they are rare; not only would their reputation have killed sales after a year or so, but to survive this length of time they would have had to be unused and in a dry climate. And unlike some surviving vehicles, they were not prone to single catastrophic faults that disabled them.
I suspect most of those sold would have contributed their mechanicals to the other, much more successful models within five years of being sold, and then crushed. Survival in the USA may have been more likely, if used on sealed roads in a dry climate, but in Australia at least, in the mid sixties, people would have bought these with the idea of long distance travel on unsealed, often appalling by today's standards, roads. And they were fast, even on bad roads, if you could stand the bumps and fuel consumption.

That is a 32. I worked on them with Flight West in TSV, but I was asked to get the 31 in Hobart up and running after it was grounded by FF due some defects. It was an ex Maroomba aircraft.
I also looked after one on occasions in Aden and Masilla in Yemen but it was blown up in the civil war in about 1996 at Aden. There were few tears shed!
The runway at Aden was 16500ft so they did not use meth and conserved it for Masilla which was usually 40c and 4000' and 1200mtr runway if I remember correctly. Everybody and everything was weighed to the last kilo.

Gidday Graeme,
That one's a 31. We had 3 x 31's and one 32 (it had the belly pod), and we used it for Cooma in the snow season.
Weights were critical as you wrote.
You couldn't get them wet, for fear of electrical gremlins, and they virtually drop out of the sky if you let them accrue too much ice.
We used water/meth out of just about every port on the east coast. Even Sydney when it was really hot.
I used to laugh at the main spar going through the aisle mid-cabin. There was a flashing sign on the roof above saying something like "mind step below".
People would look up at the sign, and promptly trip over the main spar :D
Plane Fixer
25th December 2016, 08:04 AM
I always regard anything British with suspicion; the J31/2 with the spar in the cabin is an example.
I started at TAA in 1966 and spent some time in heavy maintenance in my early years and the biggest nightmare was the Vickers Viscount. I am sure the designers worked out the components to be changed on a regular basis. They were then hung in the hangar and the aircraft built around them, add every odd size fastener in the mix and in the most difficult place to access and you get the picture.
The cabin hot air heat exchanger was in #3 engine exhaust tucked up in the fwd part of the RH main gear wheel well. It was an 8 hour job to remove it and one ended up black from head to toe. Compare the DC3, DC4, DC6, L188 B727 were a dream to work on in heavy maintenance.
These days I am happy with Twotters and Vans with PT6 and 331.

I didn't get any pics this year at the Airshow as it's the first time in 15 years I haven't been working there. I did attend one of the trade days from an invite I got and overall I was a little disapointed with the hardware on display - not nearly as many big things down at the keyhole as other years - Particularly missed the C-17 not being there to walk through.
I didn't know this thread even existed - I can post a tonne of good pics from 2019.
I'll start with the oddest of them all - The B-52 - it's a freak of engineering and close up is amazing - leaks fluids like an old Land Rover - once parked up they put a heap of drip trays under it - fail on a roadworthy for sure... [biggrin] Chatting to the crew they say the airframes will make 100 years old by the time they are retired.

Looking through this old thread I can solve the mystery.
It was one of the open air exhibits at a military museum that folded about ten years or more ago.

Looking through this old thread I can solve the mystery.
It was one of the open air exhibits at a military museum that folded about ten years or more ago.
If I had known that I might have called in. I certainly didn't see any signage, thought it was just a paddock of stuff owned by someone more eccentric ( or rich ) than I am.

I just noticed the resurrection of this thread. These are a few photos from one of the locals in my area, last ANZAC Day, Dayboro fly-over.
