View Full Version : Shipping trailers and the fruit fly gate

I have been offered to ship my trailer and race sidecar to Perth later in the year by a car carrier company. If I was to seal the trailer with either silicone or tape to keep the dust out, would it be a problem at the fruit gate at the borders?
When I have travelled through before I was made to open up my trailer, but do they do this to trailers carried on a semi?

I have not been through a fruit fly stop for quite a few years now.
In a car it's a pain, more so when all packed and on a trip as they go on the fruit hunt.
When I was in the truck I was asked what was "in the back".
I never had to open any trailer for inspection, not sure if things have changed.
I know there are a couple of members who go through that tyre regularly, hopefully they will help with the latest.

Yes they do pop058 going into S.A.
We have been through a few times in the last couple of years. Yes we had to open up our camper, we were carrying no fruit as per the rules, the only thing we had on board was an onion, and yes it was confiscated. To answer your question though, not sure about trucks carrying campers.
Wouldn't it be easier just to buy you fruit and veges over in W.A. to save any hassle?

At the WA border they are interested in Potato sacks, presumably to prevent potato diseases coming from Victoria which has a blight not in other states. Fruit and Veg are OK except potatoes.
Into SA they want to look in your fridge and if you have a fridge in your camper trailer they will want it opened. Luckily we don't have a fridge in the camper trailer. No fruit and veg allowed.

I'm not wanting to carry fruit, I am concerned about them opening the trailer if I have duct taped the door and tailgate to keep the dust out.

Maybe you can leave some tape & a note accessible, and say , if opened please reseal. You may get lucky.

Went thru that gate just after Easter, and yes, everybody gets to stop in the shade.
We had the car carefully packed, and was asked the question. Knowing the rules, and having SA plates possibly helped, but we received nothing more than a very quick check.
By contrast, at the same gate a few years back when I was towing a boat, the cover came off, and the Esky was checked.
I think if you have your trailer sealed, they will re-seal it for you. I reckon they will still open it thou.

Went through the WA/SA point last October..
Asked if I had anything, replied no (I didnt) and was allowed to pass immediately.
Didn't have a camper or trailer in tow. Friends in front with a camper weren't searched either.

The inspector asked: what are you carrying?,
Reply: don't know
The inspector: do you have an inventory?
Reply: No
The inspector: what does the consignment note say?
Reply: RAAF Base Edinburg
The inspector: can I have a look inside the truck?
Reply: No
The inspector: You're not going to let me look inside the truck?
Reply: No
The inspector: You'd better be on your way then.

I would think your main concern would be their interest in potential dirt or mud on or in the trailer. It seems that you can drive a dirty car into the state, but a vehicle on a truck (or trailer) can get the third degree over dirt and mud. I have known people to unload a car off a trailer to drive through the Quarantine stop, then reload it back on the trailer afterwards. About four years ago we moved to WA and had two vehicles in the removalist' semi with our furniture packed around them. It was 2am and raining and the inspector was insisting with the truck driver that they wanted the cars unloaded for inspection! They could see that one was a spotless partly restored 86" that had never been on the road but they insisted. It was eventually resolved that the truck could proceed to Perth and they were inspected there (after the furniture was removed).
To seal the trailer may invite suspicion that something untoward lurks inside?

Jeff. Ring the WA Quarantine Dept in Perth and ask your question. I have had good email clarification of a lawn mower import question previously. You could tape an email answer to the trailer for reference at the border if required.
