Just come back from Port Stephens, seeing relatives.
First chance since buying Rangie to take it off road. Went around the Sand Dunes at Stocton. What a blast this thing is just awesome and went through the sand like a knife through butter.
I got the best mileage i could have wished for, average 12.2 there and back to Canberra, is this good or what. The only thing i found a bit worrying is that the idle seems to be a little jumpy. Any ideas how to fix this. It just doesnt seem to idle well at all and nearly stalled at one set of lights.
No oil or coolent leaks, im thinking of putting the EAS back in, i havent had it before and have been told its better than coils i have now.
On a sad note, the Lovely Wife of mine hates the Rangie and i may be forced to sell, a last resort for me as i had planned to go right through the car and fix up what i thinke it needs and keep her forever, the car that is, the wife.................well thats another story.

Well done!!......welcome to Rangie paradise. I was the same when i first bought mine, and never ceased to amaze me how good this thing was off-road even on standard road tyres in extreme muddy conditions. I had an audience in absolute Awww!! As they saw this P38 climp a muddy slope that they'd struggled on vehicles with mud terrain tyres, lift kits, diff locks etc. That is why i just love these Range Rovers & Land Rover in general for that matter.
Definetaly put the EAS back, you won't regret it, makes the vehicle so much more capable and comfortable to drive.
Mate! I'd get rid of the wife before i'd part with the Range Rover. This is just not an option:D:p. Stand up to her:o:p. " if the Rangie goes, i go":p

Good to hear the (mostly) pleasing time!
I think sometimes the better-halves don't understand what the fuss is about, and mine is yet to feel it after 5 odd years of Rangieness!
12.2 average is really good! Especially with a bit of fun driving thrown in!
Keep up the good work and enjoy every moment mate!

My wife doesn't like the Rangie, either and won't drive it.I think that's more of a 'I want to get home again' thing rather than a 'I hate Range Rovers' thing ;).

Funny thing that mine doesn't like the Rangie either( I think it's really just jealousy) but that's ok I'd rather she didn't drive it anyway :wasntme:

SWMBO recognises the therapeutic value of me having a P38 to occupy my time now that after 45 yrs, I no longer have a regular workplace to attend on Monday mornings... She does query whether it's a hobby or another job however:D But damn it.. on a recent trip I drifted off to sleep as she drove the P38 ...and woke up as she ...with a huge grin... was drifting through a wide corner on a gravel stretch...:wasntme:

I would never take the EAS out and put a P38 onto coil springs but having been at the side of the road with a popped air spring and driven some distance on bump stops I've certainly threatened to.
However, if I had one on coils I wouldn't go to the trouble of putting the EAS back in either. Whichever suspension option you have its a compromise between comfort/capability and reliability and there's no shortage of debate on the subject.
If you want your wife to feel the love then a spine shattering ride on the bump stops will not help.

We had a Caprice before the P38 and thats what she likes, me the Caprice had more leaks than the Cabinet. This Rangie has no leaks and the only issue i have is how much to spend. It came with the coils and sits pretty high. I would like to get it to as original as possible, with as little spent as i can get away with.
Just love the thing.

Told mine, I would never sell the Range Rover as I have invested too much time and money in it so she might as well bury me in it when I go.....she didnt think that was funny and ended up sleeping on the couch that night...lol

My partner loves it and loves to drive it, though the recent fire and associated drama has tested her!

Mate I love it too. My wife definitely thinks it is an obsession! She does however like it.
We do lots of long trips out west to friend's properties etc. and it is just so comfortable to travel in. No other car, especially for the same $ comes close.
Your average fuel consumption is excellent; my 4.0 can't get anywhere near that. Is yours a 4.0 or 4.6? On a long drive, if I nurse it along and sit on about 100km I average between 13.5 and 14 and if I push it along I average about 15ltrs per 100km, so you should be really happy.
But at the end of the day, even though I may be putting more money through at the bowser, I still smile every time I look at her. I figure I am way in front of my brother's expensive, yet 'fuel efficient' prado. I have an extremely capable, comfortable and great looking rig for a bargin price.

Depreciation on a new vehicle buys a lot of fuel and maintenance for an older cheaper vehicle.

I'm in the same boat with the obsession thought from SWMBO. Unfortunately every time the slightest thing goes wrong "should we sell it?" Of course the answer is an unreserved NO!
I did get a very unexpected positive comment last year however. We had just travelled from South Germany to Holland in a BMW 3 series coupe. A great car to drive over a short distance at high speed! The trip had taken around 6 hours including refueling and lunch for the 750k's or so (if only we had the same speed limits here) but we both finished the trip with sore backs! The comparison she made was made against the year prior when we drove back from Karijini to Perth in one stint in the Rangie (around 1800 k's) we both got out feeling very tired but not aching from the trip!

And that is the mark of a vehicle.
In my late classic we did an 18 hour day South from brissy, tired but not sore.
Can't wait to pedal the p38 down the same line in september.

I have a 4.6 and the mileage is without cruise, mine wont work yet.
