BeCM Repairers - NEWCASTLE NSW or Central Coast??

Does anyone know if there are any P38 BeCM repairers in the greater Newcastle or Central Coast regions?

The only repairers I know of are Rupert Prior on this forum and Labtronx - neither are up that way.

I think Rupert is in Bexley (inner south western Sydney) and Labtronics is in Mittagong somewhere...
I'll make a few calls in the morning.
I do have another P38 but it's a 95 model and doesn't have all of the stuff that's in the 96 model although it does have a lot lower Kms.. Might work??

As long as it's a Hi Line spec BECM (sticker visible from fuse box I believe) then I can't see why it won't work in a '96.


The BECM can't just be replaced by itself though without some programming.
You can swap the BECM, engine ECU & instrument cluster from car to car. The idle might need resetting with the replacement ECU but you won't get any mis-communication problems.

Does the key and ignition switch require replacement as well?
Maybe the door lock also??
If this works then all I would need to do is get the old fault codes removed from the 95 system and then scrap the spare vehicle?

You can replace just the top power boards without any reprogramming. Providing they are hi line spec. Best if they are the same part number also, but not sure about differences.

Have never gone that deep into the BeCM as yet and will check out the specs in daylight.
It would be nice to have it all as original as possible and without the headlights doing their on/off dance day and night....
I guess that's what I get for putting 90/130 bulbs in the thing, must have cooked the FET's.

SteveCorrect, you don't need to but seeing as my parts car had half the mileage of my car, I figured I could keep the 'matching km' by changing the cluster too.

I guess that's what I get for putting 90/130 bulbs in the thing, must have cooked the FET's.That sounds like the cause. Next time you should hook up some relays & put up with the bulb fail messages.


If that is the case, then it may be feasible to have your BECM repaired rather than replaced.
Normally odd faults are a sign of water entry or general age but if the rest of the BECM is OK (as it seems), then I would send it to Lee or Rupert to have repaired. It's not as if they need to chase circuits to find the fault if it was the headlight bulbs that killed it.

I doubt you have cooked the FETS, generally they either work or they don't.

I would suspect flaky connections or a dry / failing solder joint, especially since it is intermittent

They other possibility is that it is heat related, does it happen when it's cold or when things warm up a bit or just randomly?

Hi Guys,

New power board fitted without any problem but the lights out prob still exists.
Have put a new switch in just in case the FET senses a trace but will have to wait to see what happens.
