It is 45 years since 'one small step' by astronaut Neil Armstrong ushered in a new era for mankind. :)

NASA celebrates 45 years since moon landing (http://www.skynews.com.au/news/offbeat/2014/07/22/nasa-celebrates-45-years-since-moon-landing.html?cid=BP_CAROUSEL_NEWS_apollo-11-anniversary)

Where did those 45 years go......

....and....on the same night....

the Beatles transmitted the release of their brand new song "All You Need is Love" to the same audience all over the world.

I think it was the first time I had sat up all night glued to the tv.

I can still remember as a 9 year old sitting at home watching the moon landing. It's a memory that I will not forget.
It was probably more amazing for my grandmother and her generation, considering what they had seen in their lifetime.

I mentioned elsewhere that I was a tech at Moree Satellite Earth Station. We provided the communications link back to the USA from the tracking stations in Australia.

Moree Earth Station as it was in 1968-69:

A couple of years later, I worked at the Carnarvon Satellite Earth Station and my wife worked at the NASA Tracking Station down the road. She photographed the sun looking for solar flares which would exclude astronauts doing ExtraVehicular Activities.

Those men were giants, and full kudos for the USA for the vision.

However, since then the mediocre have ruled.

Likewise and the same age, I remember that we were fascinated with all the tech in those days

You are spot on. If they (the Yanks and the Russians) put as much effort into space exploration as they have with their bloody wars, we would have a permanent base on the moon now and possibly men might have walked on Mars.

I remember very well, all the moon landings, it was indeed exciting times.

I vaguely remember watching it. Impressive what they did.
If you get the chance, read Chris Kraft's autobiography.

Loved the out takes. They were hillarious.

I remember that we watched that landing at school. There was only one tv, so every one watched in the hall way. There was less than a hundred at the school then. Was eight at the time. Geeze that was a looong time ago.
