I'm trying to repair/replace the seats in a 1960 LWB.
I think I've worked out how to make the bases but the seat backs are now a bit of an unknown.

The seat back is steel but a piece of plywood is fixed (by bent over nails !) so that the vinyl can be stapled into position. I have my doubts whether this is correct.
The steel back is different to a Series III which has a lip you tuck the vinyl under. There seems no way of attachment hence the piece of plywood.

The other option is that the seat back cover is a slip over, a bit like a Series I.
Exmoor show the steel back with a lip for both Series II & III http://www.exmoortrim.co.uk/store/series-2-3/front-seats2013-07-01-12-43-02/standard-front-seats-vinyl-detail.html

Does anyone have an unmolested early Series II seatback they can post pictures of ?

May have found the answer.
Looked at my Series IIa GS and the seatbacks feel the same but it's a slip over cover.

While investigating the IIa I found that one seat bases needs replacing and that the centre seat back is a Series II type (with the lip round the edge) but it has the slip over cover, screwed into place along the bottom edge.
Seats have been recovered at some point so I'm still not 100% sure this is how the Series II seats backs were covered.

Anyway, need to get some more plywood and make another seat base.....

Hi Colin,

I think my series 1960 got original fabric base seats. You are welcome to borrow them or i will post some pick in the morning or later today.

Thanks Nav,

If you could post pictures of the seatbacks it would help confirm the design.
It looks like the cover slips over and then is attached at the bottom of the steel pressing.
Makes it a bit harder to make but as I'm making templates for the seats for my FFR I thought I'd get stuck into the Series II as well.

Thanks Nav,

Had a rummage down the back shed and found another seat back.

This is also Series II and like the seats fitted to my SII GS it has 3 eyelets in the back to let the air out when you sit on it.

I've now found that I need new bases for the Series IIa GS and the Series II. They are either original but water damaged or odd bits of plywood that have been used to replace the originals.
It seems the seat base for an adjustable drivers seat needs to be just a bit shorter so it drops in the frame. All of mine are standard width and sit on top of the frame.
