View Full Version : puma 90 'humping around' on cold engine

Not sure whether it's a defender thing, but I find that when on a sealed road, on a cold engine, the defender humps around under engine load. Not sure whether this may be a sign of suspension issues, or something else? GenerallyThe symptom is a real jerky acceleration, or even while maintaining speed that this occurs. It only seems to happen on a cold motor. Might just be due too being thrown around the cab, pumping the accelerator while in the torque band?

The only other time I've experienced this was on a lowered car with super hard Springs on a bumpy road- the bumps were causing the accelerator pedal to be pumped inadvertently, and I'd need to get off the throttle to regain control.
Does anyone else experience this?

This sounds a little like what was happening to me a while back.
I have a 2008 110 defender.
I was find that i would be flat spots or lake of power when the engine was cold particularly in gears 2 and 3. the power would come and go.
I was also finding it increasing harder to start when she was cold.
Until one day ( being the furthest from home of course ) she would not start at all.
It ended up being a fuel spill rail, that was letting air in.
Not an expensive fix just a very annoying one.

It may be worth checking mate.

So where does one find the fuel spill rail?
Is this the hp side or the return?
There would probably be a considerable diesel leak around this area too?

Kangaroo diesel diesel is what I call it, sensitivity to small throttle inputs at low speed.

Firstly I am no mechanic but when I took the rocket cover off I found some diesel sitting the the injector housings.

Mine did it once or twice a few yers ago and then sorted itself out - I thought maybe condensation on the MAF or something like that?

It's running like crap at the moment, but that's alpine diesel for ya'!

My 130 2.2 had the surging acceleration problem at low speed.
The ecu software was upgraded and now behaves ok

That is highly likely, as it's generally when it's been sitting for a few days. It's been rather cold recently too, with frosts. I know it's likely one of those things which cannot be easily diagnosed at the dealers.
