View Full Version : A question on oil levels

Hi,
A bit of a dumb question.
I have checked the oil level on my new D4 and it is about 3/4 full according to the display.
I am out traveling, towing a van and had service before I left, 13000km, and the level was full before I left. The car has done only 15,000 km.
Should I worry about topping it up. A bit difficult as I do not have any oil with me. There is a LR dealer in the town I am at but no guarantee he would use the same oil any way and I am leaving tomorrow.
I ask as I am not entirely used to this electronic display of oil levels.
Thanks for any help
Richard

Hi Richard.
No question is dumb because you don't make the dumb mistake if you ask :)
I wondered the same thing with mine (Nov 13). I rang up and the dealer said that they prefer not to fill them to full as there is the chance of issues if it's overfilled so 3/4 is ok. I read on another thread that the gauge is not an indicator of the total oil level but rather a smaller amount - sorry can't remember what it was. Suffice to say that the gauge is probably not showing that you've used 1/4 of the oil level.

If you need to top up the gauge will indicate. I checked mine the other day, it said add .5ltr or similar.

Does it do that, indicate how much to add, for a TDV6 as well as the handbook is a bit ambiguous on this.
After reading the handbook again, god forbid, it did look I was ok but nice to hear from others
Thanks again

Mine does I rang the dealer to organise top up as the oil is rather difficult if not impossible to find.
Dealer also said was not a big issue no need to rush. A service required warning also flashed on the display for a brief second and then goes out. It does not require a service its only done 13000kms.
Its a MY 13
Cheers

You are right, it was not a full service, just a safety check up given it was new. More from me being paranoid than the dealer requesting it.
The handbook seems to differentiate between a SDV6 and a TDV6
Page 200 point 2 is confusing to me
Add oil as instructed by the dipstick display
(3.0 SDV6 Diesel and V6 petrol engines)
Or to maintain the level between the MIN and MAX marks or notches on the dipstick
(3.0. TDV6 Diesel engine)
How does the SDV6 work differently.
I am sure someone will read it differently to me and understand it but it has me buggered.😖

Richard, the base TDV6 still has the old technology of a manual dipstick. :D
It's the SDV6 that has the oil level display. All it is saying is that unless it's shouting at you to add oil, don't panic.
And apparently these engines do use a little bit of oil as they run in, totally normal.

Richard, Next page... 'the quantity of oil min-max is approx. 1.5l all models'

My Tdv6 is a MY14 and does not have a dipstick
Just the display
Maybe doco has not been updated

Yeah, I think all the 3L variants don't have dipsticks. So the D4 TDV6 2.7 does have one, the 3L TDV6 doesn't. ;)

wbowner, rgearding your question and sheerluck's response.

I seem to recall reading that the CGI (compacted graphite iron) engine blocks are porous at initial oil fill and it takes a little while for the oil to fill the pores therefore users report 'mysterious' oil usage. However it is perfectly acceptable and the oil consumption soon settles down.
Unless your engine is using much more oil that expected (by you or the dealer) then it is probably within tolerances.

Richard I thought you and others would be interested to know that I got my dealer service agent to check my oil level the other day as it was reading 1 "notch" above half on the electronic display (new MY14 in April this year/ now 6000km; no towing/ no off-road yet). Despite prior reassuring posts I wanted to know what that reading means in real terms. So they checked it for me and told me it took (only) 100mls to fill it! I checked it again yesterday and it's now reading full. Regards, David

Mine is currently the same, just above half.
I am nearly 4000km from my dealer so can't drop in there. I think nearest dealer is mackay.
I believe it is still ok though from what others have said.
