Icom products are by far superior. The components are much higher quality and based on commercial radios. I have a mate who is a technician he laughs when people try to tell him GME s are good radios. Our 4wd club has a private uhf channel so we all have Icom or Tait commercial radios. I have seen two Icoms have gearbox oil leak through them after roll overs and one submerged in water. A method bath later and reassembly and there still good years later. Sound and audio quality is much better on the Icom. When we have newbies come along on trips they normally have GME or Uniden radios and you can clearly tell there transmission from club members.

I sell both GME and Icoms at work.
Icom are a far better unit than GME.
Icom are military/mine spec units. The handpieces are chalk and cheese.
If you get a chance to view them side by side you will see the build quality of the Icom is far superior. It has ''weight'' to it, unlike the GME that feels "cheap".
I use the IC40 hand held in my Disco and have a VOX unit for it when I take it bike riding.
Don't be fooled by all the advertising.
Its the same as the Driving/Spot lights I sell. People think that L........e lights are a better light than Fyrlyts. In my opinion that is not the case, that's why I use the Fyrlyts. If you compare the two side by side you will see the difference.
As Incisor said, the sound is much clearer on the Icom.
That's my 2cents
cheers

As a side issue, when i ordered my Defender i got a quote from ARB for about $8,000 of accessories, no lift etc. However after listening to Aurlo folk and shopping around, i think i have spent $5,000 on stuff of probably better quality.
So i owe a lot of people a lot of beer.
thank you all,

Ordered the Icomm
A suggestion - the hand speaker works great but on the Icom you can plug in a remote speaker and it does not mute the hand speaker.
I find that I can easily hear an incoming call on the remote speaker and when you are actually using the mic speaker the radio is easy to hear from the speaker mic. My remote speaker was less than $20 from Jaycar with mount and plug - plugs straight in top the Icom.
Not absolutely necessary but works great in my noisy 101.

Has anyone had problems with the lead to the mic breaking the wires, due to the extra wires needed for all the controls?
A mate who hates all the controls on the mic said he knows of quite a few who have broken some of the internal wires and getting a new mic is really expensive compared to the usual type mic.
I just bought a 440 because it will fit in better with my dash design, hope I didn't make a mistake.

I have never heard of the wires coming out of an Icom mic - maybe some other brand.
I have had my Ic 440 (predates the N) for 5 years and cannot fault it.

I've had an IC-40 for about 5 years. Not a single problem with any part of it. Agree with the view about an external speaker. Makes a deal of difference in my Defender.

I had a GME in my D2 and was very happy with it.
The previous owner of my D4 installed an Icom 440N....its FAR better and clearer than my GME ever was.
