Hi all
Love this forum, just wondering if you can buy an already fully worked td5 motor in Australia or one that can be imported in..
Cheers

G'Day Mate. On behalf of the Forum. Thanks!
hmm, Fully worked. What exactly does that mean?

The TD5, like most computer controlled, turbo charged, engines have a number of areas that ccan be improved.
FULLY worked would be a monster.
Crank out of a ford Ranger with 3.2l displacement, VNT, Water to air IC, Remapped injection
220KW and 600Nm of torque and a $50K price tag.

Start with some Power/ Torque figures and you will get a better picture.

Thanks for the reply,
I just mean instead of buying the uprated turbo, intercooler, manifold etc. and fitting them separately.
Was wondering if there is already a td5 engine with all the bits and bobs already on it?

Also do you know the benefits of an uprated intercooler and manifold.

Cheers

I'm not aware of any Australian Companies offering a 'drop-in'package.
Justinc (a member here) could advise you further.

I'm just curious because they race them over in the uk but can't really find anything about them.
Thanks for your help

IIRC at least Davis Performance Landys (NSW) and Les Richmond Automotive (Vic) can supply uprated Td5's.

ok more info.

How did they take it out to 2.8ltr?

I know there was a guy from Europe (lara on here) that did his own. It involved new crank, new rods, new pistons etc. He designed it all himself and made a lot of the parts I believe. He also had axle shafts made by the same company that does them for F1 teams....

engine would have been stroked. power delivery would be good for a defender as the bigger capacity means torque at the low end. that torque number is huge.

is the motor u are looking for for racing or general driving? are you looking for something high strung or strong enough and reliable?

I put a turbo from a bmw x5 on my rebuilt and balanced td5. Custom stage 3 tune from td5 inside. I am really happy with it. Turns my 35" simex with ease. Blows the rover v8s out of the water :)

16l per 100. I think it would be a lot less if I drove normally.

would not be cheap. Stroker kit plus labour etc.

sure does sound nice though.

The 2.8 mod is very expensive. The crank is custom made and not cast so they are worth a mint. Get a good vnt turbo and a custom tune and you won't look back.

Yeah, and then check with your insurance company cos ya can bet ya left one that they won't want to insure your car for the extra value of improvements. I wanted my old 96 Def insured for more than $9K cos I reckon it would cost more than that to replace it and they reckon its only worth $6K, so put a really nice $10K+ motor in it, crash or roll it and the insurance boys tell you the whole thing is only worth $10K and you do your dough. same thing with lockers, etc - something to think about :)

From what I understand it cost a lot of money for very little gain.
So much so that it might not even be released but its early days yet.

You can get that with a std td5, big turbo and a monster tune

I am pretty sure that was a theory not an actual result
I spoke to them this morning and they are still working on it

Id rather more cubes, mild tune, compound turbos and reliability

What makes you think more cubes is more reliable than higher boost? You might be right if we were talking about changing the block and having an entirely different motor. Bigger bore means a thinner cylinder wall. Longer stroke means more off centre crank.

No price, but here is a link to DPL for a stroker kit, for a 300tdi, so something may be in the works for the TD5.

The 300Tdi kit is just the HS2.8 bottom end.

I'd be concerned about wall thickness as the 2.8 bore is quite a bit larger than the Tdi.

How much larger? More than othe 0.080" oversize pistons offered for series rovers?

They use std pistons on the td5, bore thickness is not and issue. I know they had to grind the block a little.
