this is the SA fact sheet. May not help but you never know!
Rule 294 (1) of the Australian Road Rules prevents the driver of a motor vehicle towing another motor vehicle unless:
• the driver can control the movement of the towed vehicle; or
• the brakes and steering of the towed vehicle are in working order and a person who is licensed to drive the towed vehicle is sitting in the driver’s seat of the towed vehicle, and is in control of its brakes and steering; and
• it is safe to tow the vehicle.The towing and towed vehicle will need to be a suitable combination and the A-frame attachment mechanism will need to be designed and constructed to meet set standards.
Persons wishing to undertake A-frame towing may need to seek advice from a recognised engineering signatory or a chartered professional engineer to ensure that the A-frame device meets the technical requirements of this Fact Sheet. A list of recognised consulting engineering signatories is available from the Vehicle Services Section of the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI).

It's not just about the legality of the A frame ... the question is really about setting up your own road train :) ... actually, it's prohibited...:( www.transport.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/licensing/lbu_vs_ib_107.pdf
See Page 1, under heading "Some laws that you need to know" ...third point
Regulations prohibit towing more than one trailer at once
With nationwide adoption of uniform road laws probably same holds true in all States now. I seem to remember something on this forum a while back where a bloke with a Landcruiser was reportedly nabbed for towing a camper coupled to a separate trailer with a pair of jet skis...as you do!

Oh dear!:eek::wasntme: campervan/camper trailer...:angel:
In that case :D... chap a few doors along from us has a large Winnebago-type campervan to which he attaches his Suzuki Vitara via an A-frame. It (the Suzuki) apparently came off the production line fitted for towing with an A-frame. He uses one of these Blue Ox devices Aventa LX Tow Bar - Northcoach Motorhome Equipment Parts Accessories Towing Equipment (http://www.northcoach.com.au/products/Aventa-LX-Tow-Bar.html).
There's a socket on the Vitara for connecting lights etc and an attachment point for a thin steel cable which connects to the A-frame to activate the brakes on all four wheels of the Vitara on an over-ride system...
The arms of the A-frame have some sort of buffering system and are adjustable. I had a good look at it a while ago and it's very well engineered. He's been towing in this manner all over the place for at least 5 yrs.
