View Full Version : D3/D4/RRS 4WD Weekend Info & Attendee List Updated 22nd Oct

30th July 2014, 08:16 AM
Attendee list updated 7:28 23rd Oct ............ 29 confirmed and 1 possibles.

Its on again, the second D3/D4/RRS 4WD & Camping weekend will go ahead on the weekend of the 25-26th October.

While this is considered a weekend event people can do either or both days if they wish and its open to all D3, D4 and RRS owners who would like to have some fun four wheel driving while meeting up with fellow Aulro members. Please just let us know in advance what days your planning on attending and what group you would like to be in and what vehicle you have. By the way these events are family friendly weekends so children are also more than welcome.

As Barry mentioned earlier the location where most will camp over the weekend is Lake Lyell, at the same great waterfront campsite as last year, the site has been booked for Friday and Saturday nights, cost is $20 unpowered (waterfront), $25 powered on the Terrace per night per vehicle/tent. If you are attending and want to camp then please call Peter at the camp ground on 02 6355 6347 and book one of the limited waterfront camp spots.

Lake Lyell Recreation Park | Lithgow Attractions | VisitNSW.com (http://www.visitnsw.com/destinations/blue-mountains/lithgow-area/lithgow/attractions/lake-lyell)

Given the numbers of vehicles attending already there will be two separate groups that will cater for all skill levels. Group 1 will do the more mainstream 4wd tracks and will be better suited to standard and or lightly modified vehicles and drivers who enjoy 4wdriving but don't want to do the real challenging tracks.

Group 2 will do the more challenging and harder rougher tracks. The exact tracks that will be taken are yet to be sorted but there are plenty of different great tracks in that area to the ones we went on last year, so most likely some of it will be on a number of new tracks.

Once again Jimmy Salsa and Kaz11 who film and produce all the Misadventure 4WD YouTube video clips will be attending the weekend and filming the weekends activities for one of their great 4WD video clips.

Redback (Barry) is also arranging Aulro 2014 D3/D4/RRS embroided event polo-shirts for those that would like one.

Below is an up to date attendees list. If you would like to attend and have either a D3/D4 or a Range Rover Sport then please just put up a post saying what days and which group you would like to be in.

This thread will be updated whenever people let us know that they will be attending the event. If you have any questions about the weekend please feel free to ask.
The latest person to put his hand up as a possible is Gordon (GGhaggis). It would be great if he could make, as of late today there are 16 confirmed and 3 possibles.

Hey guys,
We can move me from possible to yes... I'll be there.
I'm heading north on a longer trip stating that weekend, so will arrive Saturday afternoon / evening, spend Saturday Night/Sunday with the group. (Probably leaving late Sunday or early Monday.)
Unpowered is fine.
I might stick with Group 1 and do the sooky lah lah tracks, (assuming Group 2 is likely to medium to hard).... rather not break anything at the start of a trip away :p

Put me down for the Group 2 tracks on both days please.
Looking forward to renewing old acquaintances and making new ones:D

Updated today (9th August)
There are now 23 confirmed entry's for the trip and 5 possibles. It's all shaping up this far out to be a bloody excellent weekend of camping and four wheel driving plus the chance of getting to know other Aulro members in the flesh rather than just on the forum.
If everyone who is coming could please check the first post below and then let me know what group and days you are attending that would be appreciated.

Move me from a possible to definite!
I have just booked a powered site for the Saturday night. We have a caravan so power is nice but we can go unpowered if everyone else is down by the water.....
We are 2 adults and a 9 year old boy - Kate, Tony and Luka File.
Put us in the beginner group. Tony has done some 4WDing in a Pajero but 15 years ago! This is our first Landrover - Discovery 4.
TerryO
26th August 2014, 08:45 AM
Will do Tawmii,
The powered sites are only a 50 metre walk to the waters edge sites, we have a caravan and it will be in a powered site as well. Not much room for a van down near the waters edge, so I reckon your in the correct spot.

Yep,
EVERYONE camping needs to ring and book a spot.
Yes we have an area allocated but no it is not paid for.
So please do not expect to just roll up and get a spot, especially so with a van too!

I can confirm that there will be a Saturday evening/night charity auction which I'm starting to get Land Rover related gear promised that we can auction off on the night.
I will update in the next week or so with a up to date list of the great gear that various businesses are providing.
The number in the last few weeks has stabilised at 27 for the trip and 5 possibles, however. I expect there will be a few more when the RRC guys start to sign up soon when Discoweb organises it with their members.

Terry I met with DiscoWeb and as I am in the RRC. I can confirm I am a definite for Saturday and Sunday. Discoweb said he was likely to do something special for us RRC on Sunday. Although I am yet to get the scratches out, I got the last time I went with him :-). Only me this time no Warren to take over. He's back in NZ. I have rung the camp site and waiting on them to call me back to book an unpowered site.

The planning is still underway regarding which of the many tracks up around there will be used and that could change depending on the weather.
Re a hand held all should be good, there will be a actual tail end Charlie in each group bringing up the rear and convoy procedure will be used so whether your near the front or rear you will be able to hear most everything and in general most groups are most of the time in line of sight.

I've stuffed up and have double booked myself with a family weekend gathering that I can't get out of or reorganise for another date.

Please accept my apologies but I will have to miss the weekend at Lithgow.

(I am so p!ssed off with myself, I hadn't clicked to the date conflict until yesterday)

Hopefully the weather is kind on the 25/26, the tracks challenging and enjoyable, and the company around the campfire is cracking! Enjoy it ya lucky buggers! I'm jealous as **** & look forward to the reports & photos that follow.

I have been trying to negotiate with the better half for myself and Max to do this (was OK when I initially said I was coming) but it seems that for my birthday, I must do what others want to do. If it rains Friday, group 2 will need to find an alternative or we just suck it and see.

This is the steepest track we did, but only just, it is red clay as you can see, now it wasn't that slippery on the day for us being the first car, but Rob and Ness with muds on struggled, rob got a bit sideways and we had to winch Ness up.

You'll notice the ruts, you need to sit in them.
FILE0017 on Vimeo

The track before this is steep and if wet may be a worse problem, as it is a big single rut in a half moon shape, slide down either side and you're gunna be in trouble.

I'll load the video tonight.

If it is the way it was on the day Rob Ness and I did it, it should be OK.

The last track of the day is Heartbreak(time permitting) some may have done this track and know what it's like, those from Vic don't get to see this type of track very often.

I don't want to put people off, these tracks are not over the top and can be done easily enough in a standard 4WD, they are in some places technical and do require good wheel placement, that will be covered by some of the members with experience on the trip.

I have put these up to give you an idea of what the tracks look like.

Also there are places we go by that some of the more adventurous can have a go at, one track in particular that I went down, Rob and Ness didn't on our recommendation, that we crossed off the list, would be a challenge to get up.

Hi Baz,
I'm not that experienced at 4WDing, so was just wondering about technique on that downhill. Do you rely on HDC even when going down the really steep bits (I could hear it kicking in here and there), or do you tend to try and control it manually using your foot on the brake?
I remember doing the Advanced training with the Range Rover Club, and on the really slippery downhill sections it was to trust the HDC that it could basically do a better job than I could - whenever I touched the brakes it would skew and it would be better to let go and just adjust steering as necessary.
Cheers!

I was just letting it go down on engine braking, it's wasn't all that steep or slippery enough to use HDC, I have used HDC in extremely slippery situations though, it is really good to use if reversing down a slippery hill, I tested it out one trip away at Wee Jasper, I'll see if I can dig up the video and PM it to you.

Hey all
I'm still not sure of the timing. So I heard 9am on Saturday and Sunday?
So nothing on Saturday afternoon for those of us not arriving til Saturday?
Also, how long does each drive go for roughly and how far from the campground?
I've just realised my daughter needs a lift somewhere on Sunday afternoon and that it is 2 and half hours home....and we need to hook up the van...
Thanks

I'm still not sure of the timing. So I heard 9am on Saturday and Sunday? Yes - although Sunday may be a bit late - by the time we get our "group glamour photo shoot" completed! :D
So nothing on Saturday afternoon for those of us not arriving til Saturday? Yes - group 1 will take a break for lunch and if you time it right, you could catch up. Depending on numbers and weather - we might have to split up into two group 1s. Maybe best to PM me your mobile and I'll confirm where lunch breaks will be and roughly what time.
Also, how long does each drive go for roughly and how far from the campground? Just estimate about 30-45 minutes to drive back to camp. You'll just have to leave breadcrumbs to find your way back out! :D

That helps a bit but how long does a run go for? Will we be able to leave by 12 on Sunday? Hmmm, that means we would have to be back by 11.30 to hitch up.
Yikes, can my 14 year old catch a train and then taxi to Sydney Uni on Sunday arvo????

I'm so sorry, we were really keen to come this weekend but we just can't manage it now. My Dad had been in hospital for 19 days and on Tuesday we moved him into a lovely nursing home and everything was looking good. But last night he had many problems (most importantly escaping to the street and going missing) and they have had to move him to the dementia wing, permanently. It is just devastating as it is not a nice place to be, with the other 12 residents having more advanced dementia. I am very upset, and he is no longer particularly happy, as it is nowhere near as nice as his original room with a verandah and a whole floor of lounges and communal areas to wander and explore. I feel I need to be here on the weekend to give him company and help him settle at night, like I did last night.
Sorry to unload, but I wanted to be clear that we are not just woosing out. We were both so looking forward to getting back into 4WDing and meeting some other Discovery owners.
Do you ever do day trips from Sydney? I know this weekend must have taken a lot of organising!

Disappointed not be able to make it this year. Hope its a success (sure it will be) and you all enjoy it as much as I did last year.
Having said that, there is now a chance I may be able to come up on Sunday (depending on hangover :().
Is there a rough plan for Sunday yet?
Cheers,
Jon

We probably need to confirm what UHF Channel we are using for each group, I'll pick UHF 18 I'm assuming not everyone has an 80 channel unit yet, we do, so if those in group 2 have an 80 channel unit I would prefer UHF Channel 45, but if not all of have one UHF18 is fine.

GROUP 2 UHF18
Baz,
For the group I am leading (lose term) it will be Ch 19 but I assume we can sort the exact details on the day.
I plan to get to Lake Lyell around 8.15am on Saturday morning due to commitments on tonight (Friday), really looking forward to the weekend.
I believe I am leading an easy/intermediate group on Saturday and we will be heading toward the Jenolan SF.
Not sure of exact timing but I would like to have my group moving from Lake Lyell no later than 9.15am.
As such I suggest people target arriving no less than 30min before hand just to say hi, get organised, find a camp site etc. because getting a big group moving does take time.
See you tomorrow and I look forward to catching up with those I met last year and putting names to faces for those I have not.
Regards,
George

Hi guys, if any of you are planning on turning up either morning then the best time to get there is by 8:30 am.
The plan is a 9:00 am start on Saturday leaving from the camp site and the group photo on Sunday morning at 9:00 am as well which will take place in the camp grounds.
The reason for being there at 8:30 am either day is so everyone can organise for sure which group they are going in and who is leading each group and what radio channel they will be using. Then each day the separate groups will head off in the various directions in convoy.
If anyone has any other questions and its after about 5:00 pm today then please just ask by calling me on 0419 448452. Unfortunately most of the time when we are driving we will be out of phone range, we should be back in phone range at approx 7:30 pm.
Cheers,
Terry

With the car packed and waiting for my son to come out of school I regret to say I have to pull out as well.
We took one of our Golden Retrievers to SASH on Tuesday night with a suspected paralysis tick as she was weak in the hind legs. Nothing found and she was getting better so took her home. She's definitely still under the weather from something as she has a light limp. But I just found blood in her stools so I'm off to the vet with her now.
Sorry.

Unfortunately we are unable to make this weekend due to last minute family issues.
I have cancelled our powered site booking for tonight and Saturday with Peter and advised him to rebook it if he can, so if anybody is after a powered site (no 6) then feel free to ring him on 02 63556347 asap.
Terry, I will try ringing you direct also.
Hope the weekend is enjoyed by all and will look forward to checking out the next one.

Just got home and unpacked from a brilliant weekend of 4wding and putting faces to names... :o
Thanks to everyone for making it a huge success alot of effort went in by the organisers and it is appreciated.. Is it to early to sign up for next years ??
As soon as I've had chance to edit the GoPro footage for group 1 both days I will post it..
My D4 now sports some quality bush stripes, due to the last couple of tracks of the day, so I now have something to remember this weekend, each time I look at the car 😘
Thanks again and I hope everyone gets home safe...

Yes, echoing the thanks to the organisers and to everyone who helped out. A special call out to Ron, George, & Terry for their particular patience extra help in guiding the members of Group 1 through the more challenging parts as we learnt more about 4WDing.
Here are some videos I have uploaded. None are particularly exciting, but you can get your claim to 5 seconds of fame.
