I have a 50y old oak tree in my yard and I have just noticed a piece of mistletoe growing up near the crown. Any suggestion as to how to remove this? The branch is a main stem and it is too flimsy to climb up near the top. Short of chainsawing the tree down, are there any suggestions? No cherrypicker would get near it. Jim

The only way to get rid of it is to cut the branch about 40 -50 cm below the infestation point. That said, the source of infection must be oaks nearby. You may get rid of this infection, and it may well be reinfected from the neighbouring tree(s).

That's about my sum total knowledge of mistletoe. Why don't you want it in your tree?

Because it is a parasitic plant and will eventually take over the tree

If you know someone with a remote controlled helicopter, use that to wipe it with Round-up...

Quite seriously, a 303 works well. Take off the branch just below the mistletoe

When I was snigging rosegum the CSIRO used to harvest seed with a 30-30 used to nip the small seed branches from the top of the tree We have a red cedar here with mistletoe were told it would kill the tree. 30 years on the tree is fine but every now and then a bunch of mistletoe dies and drops off:eek:

Can you get a chainsaw small enough to fit under a quad copter?:p

Looks like he lives in the Suburbs, I imagine the neighbours and the cops would look unfavourably on someone in the burbs blasting away with a high powered rifle.
Get a ladder and some herbicide like Tordon, whack a few notches in the holly and spray or inject the herbicide, it will kill roots and all, try not to damage the tree or get any herbicide onto it, Regards Frank.
