But FourX isn't beer..

if it was it'd say "beer" on the can but as that would get them sued for false
advertising they had to replace it with something else...

apparently all they could think of was to put four X's on the advertising mockup whilst they decided what to call it...

and so it came to pass XXXX was born..

Our history

The story of XXXX

Well, it’s been an action-packed journey, from humble beginnings in 1877, to becoming Australia’s number one beer. Let’s take a look at the proud heritage of a beer we like to call XXXX.

Two brothers

It all started with a wide-eyed and crazy dream. In 1877, two brothers, named Nicholas Fitzgerald and Edward Fitzgerald, had one goal in life: to create the finest ales known to man, loved by generations across this sun-drenched land. After starting out in Castlemaine Victoria, the brothers decided they needed a world-class brewery (and warmer weather), so they packed up and moved the whole operation to Brisbane. And so the Castlemaine Perkins brewery was born, known today as the home of XXXX.

Call in the master

In the early 1900s, XXXX imported a new master brewer from Germany to make XXXX better than ever before. His name was Alhois William Leitner, and he expertly solved the problem of ‘cloudy’ beer by creating a recipe that would still keep fresh even when it was transported over the treacherously long distances of Australia. We still use this recipe today for XXXX Bitter.

The missing X

What do the X’s in XXXX mean? Back in the day, beer quality was measured in Xs. The brewery’s first brew produced was XXX Sparkling Ale, which was awarded three Xs. The results were promising, but something was missing. So in 1924, they perfected the recipe further, gaining a fourth X.
In the same year, Mr FOUREX was introduced to the world and he soon became one of the most recognised symbols in Queensland. To read more about this iconic man, take a look at the Mr FOUREX video (http://www.xxxx.com.au/thexxxxalehouse/mr-fourex/).

Supporting the troops

The first and second World Wars saw XXXX distributed across the world for thirsty troops. For many a soldier, XXXX was the distinct taste of life back home. The diggers even affectionately nicknamed the lager “Barbed Wire”. The boys returned home to the only country where you can enjoy XXXX today. Yep, we keep our best brew just for the Aussies.

XXXX Innovations

After the 1950s, the brewery continued to grow with the introduction of new brews including XXXX Lite, Castlemaine 2.2 Bitter and Castlemaine Special Dry. The brewery also started using a great new innovation called the ‘stubby’, a compact sized bottle that was stronger, easier to hold and readily transported.

The XXXX Community

XXXX has always been the drink of the people. Whether it’s helping the local publican establish the best pub in town, kitting out the local footy team or providing much-needed funds for hundreds of organisations, XXXX has a proud tradition of supporting the community – take a look at our Sport and Lifestyle (http://www.xxxx.com.au/sports-and-lifestyle/) section for more info.

Striking GOLD

The early 1990s was a great time for the brewery. 1992 saw the launch of XXXX GOLD (http://www.xxxx.com.au/our-beer/xxxx-gold/) – a mid-strength beer that went on to become the best-selling beer in Australia. It seemed that Australians had a special spot for this refreshing mid-strength full-flavoured beer. After just one taste, we think you’ll see why.

Reaching a milestone

In 1999, the five billionth stubby rolled off the XXXX production line. In the very same year, part of the old brewery was demolished to make way for the new XXXX Brewery (http://www.xxxx.com.au/thexxxxalehouse/xxxx-brewery-tours/), and 5000 bricks from the old brewery were sold, raising $20,000 for charity.

Never-ending summer

In 2009, XXXX Summer Bright Lager (http://www.xxxx.com.au/our-beer/xxxx-summer-bright-lager/) was launched into an unsuspecting world. The refreshing taste of summer in a bottle. Brewed using superior bright filtration and free from artificial additives and preservatives, XXXX Summer Bright Lager became the perfect beer for the Australian summer.

The ultimate destination for mates trips away

In 2012, XXXX became the first beer brand to get its very own island. Yep, you read that correctly, we got our own island! Located on the Southern Great Barrier Reef of Queensland, XXXX Island (http://www.xxxx.com.au/xxxx-island/) was designed to be the ultimate destination for mates’ trips away… check out our videos to see why!

VB is beer brewed without taste for people with no taste. My late father-in-law who dearly loved a beer or twenty used to refer to Carlton products as "Surfside Sex".

To be quite honest, I can't remember what beer I drank in the Territory. It was, green cans , blue cans , gold cans, NT lager [ if desperate] Kimberly cool, perhaps it was because of all that I can't remember, a small part of my life, but a large part of my memory, Bob
