I m sorry another tyre thread. I am off to the Flinders and for the moment am stuck with 19 " rims. I have seen a fair amount of feedback on Coopers and General Grabbers but nothing on the Pirelli ATR's on the type of roads one comes across in the Flinders (Rocks)
Has anybody had any experience with these tyres in 19 inch size.
Need to replace the OEM tyres for the trip.
Thanks
Tony

Just returned from 9000km trip through Central Australia on 18" Pirelli ATR's. We didn't quite make the Flinders but the roads around Mt Dare were atrocious with rocks. No punctures and they performed great. Also had them at Fraser Island earlier in the year.

As long as I get some decent mileage out of them, I'll certainly be buying them again.

I would stick with Coopers, many have had good success with them.

jon3950 on here has had them in the flinders and other places,no problems at all.

Keeping pressures/speed correct seems to reduce issues.

Had a set fitted for a recent trip Melbourne to Alice via Tibooburra, Strezleki Track, Oodonadata Track, Dalhousie, Uluru, Kings Canyon and Palm Valley via Boggy Hole. No problems - no difference in road noise compared with OEM Goodyears and a tougher construction (extra ply layer). Bought them from tyresales for $270 each and had them fitted locally for $25 each. Will soon swap them back for the OEMs as they only have 20k wear on them, but will use in preference once the Goodyears have worn or next outback trip, whichever comes first.

I have taken a set of Pirelli ATR through flinders and Arkaroola(?). Puncured one on one of the side tracks. I think this could happen to any tyre out there. I still think they are good tyres. I now run Hankook DynaPro. I swapped as i had some aquaplaning with half worn pirelli ATRs. Have towed a van most of the way around australia including rocky tracks and so far so good. They are slightly noisier. This is on a 2010 D4 with 19 inch standard rims.

So Roverlander, how would you compare the Dynapros to the Pirellis... any significant stand out for one or the other? Are yours 255/55/19?

I did many of the Flinders tracks including all of Brachina Gorge, which is made mostly of sharp rocks, on cheapish 20" Nexen road tires... The tread looked a bit chipped at the end of our two week holiday up there, but the tires were still very quiet on the road.

A good AT would've been perfect, you should have no trouble at all.

Thats what I think as well. Plenty of feed back re grabbers and coopers not so much on the Pirelli's. That in of itself might mean something.

As Paul mentioned, I have run 19" LTZs out there without problem and would recommend them, but I don't see why you should have a problem with the Pirellis. I have no experience with them but everything I have read has been positive.

Quite frankly, I think the roads in the Flinders are bloody good - even in the north. Even the rough station tracks are fine as long as you are careful. Just drive to the conditons, keep the speed sensible, don't lower your tyre pressures too much and you'll be fine.

Jon

Recently went through the flinders & Oodnadatta on a set of pretty worn (5-6mm) 19"ATR's, covered 5500km in 9 days. Dropped the pressures down to around 28-30psi when on the dirt and didn't suffer at all, the tyres were barely scuffed.

I've just bought a new set, 3rd set I've had. Unless it was heavy mud or very rocky I'd be comfortable using them.

Yes 255/55/19
Road noise. Pirellis slightly better
Grip on dry road: probably slightly better for Pirellis
Grip on wet road: not tested but i suspect the Hankook is better on very wet roads. This particularly when partly worn.
Wear: i am wearing the hankooks rather quickly but i have been towing a 3200kg caravan for 17,000kms around Aus. About half worn now.
Strenght/ puncture resistance: the Hankooks are a light truck tyre. When i had to chance to pick up one of each the hankook was significantly heavier than the pirelli. I believe the Hankooks are stronger.

So on balance i think i prefer the Hankooks for what I do with the car.

Thanks Roverlander, I have the Hankooks on mine (previous owner put them on.) I like them.

Everyone seems to have an opinion on the "right tyre"... its nice to get information from someone with experience to clearly compare two you would consider... :)

There have been plenty of discussions on this site about Scorpion ATRs ... usually very positive comments ... maybe they have been deleted over time.

I was a Pirelli advocate after fitting them to my first D4, after 3 punctures within a week with ~50% worn Wranglers. The Wranglers are good in the wet and dry but are soft and puncture prone.

The Pirellis are definitely strong and the tread block is durable even on sharp rocks. I've read that even though they are not LT, they do have tough sidewalls.

Unfortunately, I found you have to keep them quite hard (40psi +) to stop the outer edges wearing very quickly.

Mainly I lost confidence in the wet due to aquaplaning issues ... which I've now read a bit about. It seems that once the edges wear, the water is blocked from ejection, as there is a rubber bar or support on the outer tread block that is fine on a new tyre but is an issue once worn. I'm not sure how true that is ... it might just be a compound issue but quite a few folks report the slipping or planing issues after some wear.

I never felt confident in the wet with them after a bit of wear, especially once I had a horrendous, almost ran into a concrete wall experience, at around 100KPH on a wet road. I may have got blasé about the conditions as it had been raining for hours and I'd never had an issue that day or before when the tyres were new or with the OEMs. But when a 3 ton truck turns almost side on, instantly, with no warning, it certainly gets your attention. Hats off to the D4 though ... it's TC is amazing and righted the wrong very quickly and averted what could have been a very ugly situation.

I can't comment on any other tyre ... maybe all ATR type tyres suffer the same issue. I have LTZs on GOE rims but they only get used for camping and have never had to drive through any significant rain.

Hand on heart, I don't think I'd buy Scorpion ATRs again due to my lack of wet weather confidence and based on a now recurring topic in that regard.

Cheers,

Kev.

They are.... but they don't come in a 19" size - so not a lot of use to many of us.
