Puma fuel filter - drain check - NOT filter replace - prime afterwards?

I am curious to do a water/debris drain check via the tap on the bottom of the fuel filter housing (MY10 Puma 110), and I note the "official" procedure is to do a prime afterwards. However, I also note that many people have advised that when REPLACING a fuel filter, you simply fill the housing with diesel and no priming required, no problem. But, I can't find advice as to whether you can get away with not priming when just doing a filter drain check.

So: can anyone advise if you can crack the filter tap, collect a sample to check for water/crud, and then just close the tap and NOT prime the system before attempting a start?

I haven't needed to prime, but I only drain out enough to confirm if water or debris is present. Always been pretty clean.

Same, I drain mine every 2nd week, just enough to check for contamination, never had to prime.
Also done a couple of filter changes, filled new one with diesel and off you go, no problems. I guess just don't completely drain your filter and all should be good.
