But yes, either an example of 'a little knowledge is dangerous' or he's hoping that 'there's one born every minute'.

As I understand it, all the 1948 Land Rovers had the mesh grille covering the head lights, not as this one has with holes in the grille for the headlights.
So if that's the case. then this is not a 1948 vehicle as stated by the vendor.
Makes one wonder what else may be incorrect in the advert.

Agreed that it's not a 48 or 49 as wrong grill and seat backs. Interesting arrangement of twin levers by gear stick. Doesn't show if it has front spring hangers to the front.

Late 1950, only about 5,000 of that type of 50 model probably 1,000 in Australia. But none to the Army, at least the Australian Army.
Not a 51 because the windscreen hold down clamp is attached to the bonnet, where almost all the '51 had it attached to the windscreen rest.
The twin gear leavers are interesting. It was possible to operate the freewheel lock directly off the selector shaft. Perhaps this is a mod that has happened during its life. Would be interesting to check out the linkages under the floor. I doubt it would be one of the early freewheel units where you could select 2H F4H and locked.

I have seen single stick conversions but not triple... The 3rd stick must be for some implement or OD???
A few people in LROCB had a single stick conversion (2H / 2L / 4H / 4L)

My '56 has an extra gearstick similar to that shown in the advert.

Allows you to get out of 4WD without having to do the high/low switch.
Push down yellow lever to select 4WD and additional gearstick moves forward, pull back addditional gearstick and back into 2WD.

ColinHowever if the rare 1950 model is true to its original build (and the instruction plate on the dash), it should still have a freewheel unit front output.
As we all remember these models were constant 4WD (4H and 4L) but allowed the front output to run faster than the drive rate to prevent wind up. The ring pull or yellow button in these only locked up the freewheel unit, so you also had 4WD in reverse.

It doesn't seam to have the fabricated firewall the early 48's had . The belling housing looks rounded not square . Also doesn't have a ring pull transfer case. The grill & 7" head lights make it a very late 19 50 / 51. Also the seat backs are the wrong shape for a need 48 /49 or 50. the chassis no to see what it is . This guy doesn't know s
anything about S1's.
, Thinks he is sitting on a gold mine, trouble some one who knows less than him will buy it . What does this make my 1945 Landrover worth , Ha Ha Ha!

My 1935 Land Rover was used by Austin of England as the design concept which resulted in their Bantam prototype for the 1/4 ton general service vehicle by the US War Dept. Which I guess makes it the grandfather of the ubiquitous WWII jeep.

Just sent the email below to the seller.
"I was looking at the Land Rover you have advertised and a few things are confusing me.
The grille & seatbacks date it to around 1951.
I notice an extra gearstick has been added, could you tell me what the function of the extra gearlever is.
The speedo looks the same as all the 80" wheel base Land Rovers so could you explain your comment about being 'handmade because of the speedo size'.
I'm very interested in this vehicle but need the chassis & engine number so I can research the manufacture date more thoroughly.
Thanks,
Colin"
It'll be interesting to see if he replies.

I think its worth that and more, and they are incredibly rare,
I know as I also have one... actually mine are a common 1950 and a common 52...
I think the value is right....so who wants to make first bid on mine??
-- what is the plate left of the guage console?
dealers plate??

Lucky I have the other 11 that came to Australia, will sell off as a job lot for the same amount. First to deposit the cash gets them.
Just waiting for the cash to roll in.
All those special 48 features, like the wrong lights, wrong tilt tie down points etc. But you can see the A frame attachments where the "retired colonel" towed it behind his tank.

Yes, but was yours sold to you by a Colonel? If not, it almost valueless!
Mine was sold to me by a retired Brigadier; therefore; I am expecting $30 000 and after receiving the cash I expect to be able to keep it. :D

Regardless of how authentic it is, and clearly it is not what the vendor believes it to be, who would part with $20,000 to buy a vehicle and then be told how it is then to be restored. Dreamer.

Just spoke to the owner and he thinks it is a 1944 model. The chassis number is 16160371. He has (what he claims to be) the original engine in his shed. It is currently fitted with a 138 grey motor.
Now, play nice :D

Did the Wilkes brothers copy a top secret war machine and claim it as their own design?
Was this war machine placed on Earth by a UFO, sponsored by Monsanto, checked off and then denied by Putin?

Arthur, you may be onto something there. I suggest that everybody who's been posting on this thread lays low for a while. I've just been watching "Secret State: A Very British Coup" on the ABC this evening, and it has certainly been food for thought.
If "they" work out that certain individuals are onto their plot to fill the world with Land Rovers that came into being before they were made, drive up emissions and send the world spiraling into a global warming/cooling/warming/little-bit-cooler/ah-that's-just-right cycle and reap the profits of centuries of conflict our lives could be in danger.

The one thing I have noticed it does have a 48 steering wheel .No that's a 4 spoke wheel that started in 1950 and finished in 1966. EDIT: this seems to already have been sorted.
BTW the small rectangular plate to the LHS of the instrument binnacle will be either the "The Rover Co. Ltd." plate or one of the later distributor plates. (middle image below)
