Hi all.
Anyone know a source for a P38 winch mount in Oz?

I have a winch that is mounted between the front chassis rails, courtesy of fitting the MCC bull bar. The winch tray is supplied with the bull bar.

In Oz - your options are zilch for just a discrete winch mount. Other than fabricating your own.

You can buy them out of Europe.

I posted some pictures one time - showing me refitting the MCC bull bar. I'll dig out the link.

OK Thanks for that. Appreciated. Will work on it.

I recall a really nice front winch fitting that came through the original front bumper.
If memory serves, the conversion was done by a French chap who had heavily modified his P38.
Someone here may remember it and provide a link?

Yeah the evolution p38 website sells them. There was an option available with a warn winch - recall seeing it for Dale somewhere but prohibitively expensive. I have fitting instructions filed away somewhere. I'll dig them out and post. It'll be Monday now though.

I recently saw at my local shopping centre in Oz, a P38A fitted with the factory winch mount. Scouse knew the car. I took some lousy pics with my phone.

I'd like to get hold of one of the mounts to copy. I've had the winch from my previous RRC sitting on the shelf for the past 12 years.

Yes a factory mount top copy would be awesome

Shipping from Europe is not cheap

From this thread

http://www.aulro.com/afvb/p38a-range-rover/193807-steering-guard-skid-plate-2.html

"I had an answer from Florent at rr-evolution, shipping for the steering guard and front winch receiver combined is 300 euros, so expensive as expected"

So a local solution is the best option!

Looks like th RR evolution website is down.
I did find a link to an article showing his P38 with a good pic of the front winch

There's a p38 winch mount on eBay (USA) for US$350. Not sure about the shipping to Oz.

I looked at that winch mount and "BMW rocket science" rang a dim bell :p

So a bit of a search turned up this thread

BEWARE: P38 Winch Mount from BMW_Rocket_Science - LONG Post - Page 2 (http://www.rangerovers.net/forum/7-range-rover-mark-ii-p38/36820-beware-p38-winch-mount-bmw_rocket_science-long-post-2.html)

Seems it's an adapted tray from a Humvee, it might be a good starting point though

These guys were selling the LR optioned discrete winch mount a few years back:

I am sorry for what little pictures I have. This is what I used Amazon.com: Superwinch 2302292 Mount Plate for LP8500, LP10000, TS9500, & TS11500: Automotive@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31gQdoJgTiL.@@AMEPARAM@@31gQdoJgTiL

I cut off 5.5 inches (let me measure it before you start this I am going off memory) of each side of winch plate with a band saw for a perfect cut. I used those two 5.5 inch of plates to bolt up to the inside of frame with c side pointing into each other. I used the bottom mount hole that was already on the plate to mount to frame. Drilled a new hole through new C plate for upper frame bolt. I then centered and placed new shorter mount in position. Tack welded the lower cutoff C's to upper. Then drilled two more holes on each side joining upper winch mount to lower C's. Then welded it all up. Once on I cut off a 45 degree angle off lower front of C's so the bumper would fit. I also welded in a 2 straight pieces of bar stock on each side of mount to lower frame near bottom of radiator to keep it from being pulled down during use. Oh you will need to relocate your cooling fans which I got new generic ones. You will need to cut out body brace shown in pic. I also cut out two holes at the top of bumper so the winch mount bolt heads do not push bumper down for a tighter fit. I have less than 150 dollars into this mount. I am sure I am forgeting something. As I remember I will correct above info.

I have one of these plates sitting in the garage if anybody wants to give me what I paid for it (AUD103.63 plus AUD60.48 for P&P = I'd take AUD100) and attempt the job ala the prior post.

Just saw this one on eBay

Range Rover P38 Winch Mount in Echuca, VIC | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/171416658093'ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649#ht_177wt_1362)

I have spoken with Mark who is distributing them. There is still further modification to be done on the mount. It will also have mounts to the cross bar (similar to the discrete winch mount). Great thing is that he is local (well at least for you Eastern States ;)) and it is manufactured in Australia.

That looks pretty good !

Says it is not airbag compatible though. I wonder if the factory tray is?

It would be a nice idea to add a couple of recovery points to it as well:cool:

Firstly, I've seen a genuine LR winch mount on a P38 (a Trivett customer, the one Ron mentioned a few posts back) & it is mounted at number plate height.

Secondly, none of the part numbers in those instructions look like regular LR numbers.

Thirdly, there's photos of the factory kit here:

I must say I like the hitch mount idea which Florent has come up with. It also helps with the front recovery point issue.

It can't be that hard to fabricate something, especially if we have a basic idea to work from. I reckon Benji who did my rear bar could do it easily, problem is you need to rip a heap of stuff of the front of the beast to get access:(

Yep scouse. You're right. It was a couple of years ago when I looked at all things winch. The LR one also had a cover that went over it. I saw one on a diesel P38 in deacon auto a couple years ago. Tried to buy it off them.

I decided the discrete aftermarket mount was too low. The eBay one also looks a little too low also. Just trying to show options and help with ideas.

Hi guys, Mark here with the eBay mount for sale. Thanks Gary for pointing me here, I hope to get some great info from around the site.
The mount certainly hangs lower than I first planned, however it really doesn't impact on clearance and only changes the entrance angle slightly.
The pictures probably don't show this very well, I'll try and get some better pics on the ad showing angles, clearance etc. cheers

Heading up to the high country next week, I'll be giving the winch mount as good a test as possible, with and without extra brackets. The challenge will be to break some bolts in its current state and go from there.
It'll also be the first trip for me in the P38 since the retirement of the Disco 1 so looking forward to that..:)

Winch mount success, Winch Success, Dyneema Rope Failure.... Had a great little trip last weekend (1st in the P38, LOVE this car) which was also a great opportunity to give the winch mount a bit of a test in situ.
After some easy recoveries with all going well but not under heavy load, my mate managed to get his Disco 2 well and truly jammed in a couple of muddy ruts up against the side steps, and on a cornered rut.
We thought this a good opportunity to put the winch under some heavy load.... We were correct, the 13,000lb winch was working harder than I had ever heard it work before, winch mount held perfectly and the Dyneema rope was the first to go. So shovels and snatch it was.
VERRY Happy with the strength of the mount points, I'll post some pics over the weekend of the mount and extra brackets. Cheers

I just made one up, (modified a bought one) for about $150 if the P38 chassis is the same I could sort another one.

The measurement between chassis rails is the important thing.

In the landrover winch plate fitting instructions it says to use 15 mm bolts.
You have to drill it out obviously, but the crush tubes are 15mm so it makes for a snug fit.

I wish I'd seen it earlier - he's in Echuca and I was there last week! :(

I wonder if he'd share the drawings?...... :p

Hi

Mark has gone quiet on the winch mount so now I am on the hunt again :(

There are some pics of a factory mount here

P38 Factory Winch Install Warn XD9000 CE - General Discussion Forum - NCLR - Northern California Land Rover Club (http://norcalrovers.org/forum/index.php?/topic/1936-p38-factory-winch-install-warn-xd9000-ce/)

And a guy on FB made one

https://www.facebook.com/media/set/'set=oa.10153784843882230&type=1

So it should not be too hard to get one made if I can get the measurements, which might be possible using those pics
