Picked up an excellent book the other day 'Vehicle-dependent Expedition Guide'.
The book is by Tom Sheppard and is a guide on preparing for vehicle expeditions. It is obviously useful for camping as well but Tom's background is all about exploring and expeditions including the first lateral, coast to coast crossing of the Sahara, in a bunch of 101s. Book covers everything from packing, navigation, communications, fuel and oil types, spares and tools, clothing and shipping etc. In fact it covers everything.

For those that saw the 'For the Love of Cars' episode where they restored the Series I, Tom is the person they interviewed in the Lake District.

I ordered the book through Desert Winds Publishing and cost about $80 including postage.

I have zero connection to Tom or the company but just think the book is great.

Thanks for the tip.

Just ordered mine, but with the exchange rate it was $98.55. :(

Looks like it's going to be a great read... :)

The book, now in it's 3rd edition, is well worth having and can be considered the reference in expedition or overland travel planning.

Thanks for the post. Checked it out on Amazon UK and some crazy prices from 3400 pounds down to 138 pounds for the various editions.
Desert Winds is clearly the place to get it from.
Cheers
Tony

On a slightly related note ....

I'm reading "First Overland " London to Singapore by Tim Slessor - the first journey by motor vehicle in 1955 in Land Rovers of course !

Its been reprinted a number of times , they made a film at the same time . Its a bit stilted to read as the language is out of date , but the story is good !
Its about some 'lads; at university who decide to drive across europe and asia with no money or vehicles .....by sheer front they end up sponsored by land rover , and financed by a petrol company . Its also interesting to read about just how bad a state europe was in after ww2 and how some things in the middle east have not changed .

Still a good read .

I am pretty sure Desert Winds is Toms own company because when I emailed them it was Tom who answered. That will be why they are cheaper from there and its also good that the profits go directly to the author.

Another similar book is called "year With Three Summers". it's written by Ben Mackworth-Praed and Mike Andrews, (who is my BIL)
They drove their Land Rover from Southern South America to Alaska. Their old Rover was recently 'found', still in Alaska and reported in land Rover International magazine.
