Tyres were most likely 30x3.5. A major advantage is that it probably had better ground clearance (including under the diff), breakover, approach and departure angles than any current Landrover - and almost certainly weighed a lot less than any current Landrover, and had a lot of the weight over the driving wheels.

You don't have to go that far back - the scenes shown would have been typical for most roads in Australia outside the cities until the 1950s - until then, most travel by most people, was by train (There were a few strategic highways sealed, but not many). From about 1950 onwards there were major roadworks all over the country, and the next twenty-five years saw almost all major highways at least sealed, even if many only had a single lane of bitumen (a Queensland special in particular), and most ferries on highways replaced by bridges.

Since then, most effort has been on upgrading roads that were already sealed, although there are probably still a lot more kilometres of unsealed roads in the country than there are sealed.
