View Full Version : How many flat tyres have you had

Gday All,

This is more driven by the want / idea that most of us have of having the same stud pattern on your trailer/van as the car.

I am curious as I looked at doing the same, but then found with my camper running 15" LT tyres I personally have never had a flat tyre on the camper yet, and I would assume most other are the same. Of course if you are running bald or bad tyres then you will get what you deserve.

I understand the option of being able to change wheels from car-trailer-car what do you really achieve?

I carry the 1 spare for the trailer, 1 for the car and a spare 18' tyre only on the camper as I have found even in most small towns on the highway 18' tyres are hard to come by , my mate in a Prado found that out the hard way.

Cheers Ean

None ever, but I still changed my trailer wheels to be able to be fitted to the D2 at pretty considerable expense and effort.

It's all the luck of the draw. I met a bloke in the Flinders who lost 3 tyres in one hour on a Patrol.

An acquaintance did 2 on his caravan on the Gateway bridge 2 weeks ago when he ran over steel dropped from a truck. They were then completely stuffed as he had to go 1.5 Km to pull over. While its probably impossible to have an onroad caravan match a 200 Cruiser he was stuck until help arrived.

Good question Ean

I have never had a flat on the trailer...I not only went same rims but also land rover callipers and hubs. With good quality/condition tyres on the trailer I reckon it unlikely to have a flat.

To date I have only just carried two spares.........one on the car and one on the camper, with the thought they mainly for the car. If I ran different rims tyres on the trailer I recon I would need to carry three spares, two for the car and one for the trailer....cause you know if you don't have a spare you will need one.

Harsh. I had a batch of crap tyres I bought just before a trip in 2012, three were stuffed before Broken Hill so needed to head into Adelaide to get more spares as I couldn't get my size in Port Augusta and didn't want to go across the Nullabor with one spare.

We had 2 flats on the Gove road half an hour apart a few years ago. We now tow the boat with a Defender and have interchanging tyres. It is difficult to spot a flat on a trailer on a dust filled corrugated rock road as you tend to get a bit up your way, We had 3 flats in one morning near Nathon River

As well we carry tyre repair / changing gear (used in anger a few times), plugs, patches and spare tubes .............. although a bit hard to fix the trailer tyre above.

G'day Erich,

Glad you posted was wondering how your travels would influence this topic. So you had both trailer and car same stud pattern and seems to have been handy in your instance.

Think it may be more difficult to convert to D3 rims but certainly you put forward a good case for it.

Cheers Ean

Interesting topic.
My camper trailer project has D2 alloys with brand new 235/85 Wrangler MTRs,the tread pattern is no longer available.
I had a brand new matching MTR as a spare on BlackBetty so I took a camper trailer spare and the D2 spare in to get swaped last week. The camper trailer runs a different style D2 alloy, plus the centre had to be growled out to suit the camper trailer hub so they had to be swapped.
Beaurepairs couldnt get the 235/85 off the D2 rims with the tyre machine. The tyre was too tall and the safety bead is in too far, they rekon you could run 0psi and not break the bead:D:D:D:D:D
Ended up having to use the truck tyre machine to get the tyres off the rims.Tells me there is no way I could get them off the rims outback if I wanted too!!!!

I travelled 45,000k,s around Australia across many remote tracks with the same wheels and tyres on my defender and camper. Net result was not one flat on any tyre. Made me think that matching the spares on car and trailer really isn't as important as quality tyres and monitoring the tyre pressure is. Just my 10cents :D

Same setup here, 12,000k trip last year including the Gibb RR
Disco1 steelies with Toyo M55's on camper and Defender and not 1 puncture.
And we carried 3 spares.
Still it is peace of mind when remote and you can't be too prepared;).

We gave up counting the tyre carcasses on the Gibb some still with the rim.

Helped out some travelers coming from the other direction.
It was a hire car with highway tyres, 2 punctures and stuck on the side of the road in 40 plus degrees.
Like I said you can't be too prepared.

Paul.

I had matching rims on the van to suit my Puma and no flat tyres. The Puma is sold and the van is now pulled by a Ranger (17"), I'll see if Murphy plays a role in the future.

Have had a rim crack but no flat tyres. I guess that is almost pretty much the same thing anyway as I changed the wheel incase it fell apart on the drive home, so I needed a spare.

I run 2 spares on the Defender and 1 on the Trak Shak - they are all interchangeable. Also carry repair gear and tools with us when travelling.

When I replace the 6 tyres on the Defender, I use the best 3 for the Trak Shak - means I'm constantly rotating the 9 tyres rather than buying dedicated tyres for a trailer.
