Hi all,
Got a rude shock on friday when i opened my insurance renewal, broker i have been using which up to now has been really good sent me a renewal for the D4 and the price has jumped a staggering $500!!! to $2300!!
No claims or any changes to my status so cannot understand it. Havent spoken to them as yet as i opened it on Sat morning but covering bases and want to now shop around.
Got a fair few options/add on's etc so but nothing added since i insured with them last year.
Has anyone got any recommendations. Need full cover anywhere in Oz for all offroad situations etc and also as the car is only 12 months old new for old for the next few years. Any advice warmly received:)

After over 30 years with Suncorp,i couldn't cop the massive increase this year.
Ended up going with AAMI,less than half the price and another $100 off as we did it on line.
Make sure you get windscreen cover as the windscreens with rain sensors are very expensive.AAMI included windscreen cover.

Thanx Scarry and Kero!
Will look at both these, like the idea of the 4 year new for old for 4 years, a mate just insured a 170K Merc for the same price as their now quoting me so somethings wrong for sure.

Yeah, I'm not looking forward to my renewal after my wheel claim which was not my fault. :(
Might be shopping around. ;)

All these companies bank on your loyalty. They just ratchet up the price every year by hundreds of dollars expecting that your loyalty and their no claim bonus will keep you with them. I'll bet if you try an online quote with your current insurer they'll be very much cheaper than what your renewal is - which royally ****ed me off when I went through the exercise. At that point I had no hesitation dropping them to go with a significantly cheaper option.

I havent done much carnage in my driving years, worst effort was a XD ford and a light clip of a power pole doing a U turn, hit the kerb pulling the steering wheel out of my hands. It was repaired so not so bad a prang, was 19 at the time.Since then its mainly been windscreens or 3rd party damage;););););)

As does age,driving history,excess,k's done a year,etc.
Suncorp were over $1200,i am pretty sure AAMI were something like $400.
I will check tomorrow.
Mine also covers anywhere including off road, such as beach, and also any mechanical damage caused by dirty fuel, but not the wrong fuel.
My D4 is also nearly 3 yrs old,and we do less than 15k per year, and we are in our 50's.

I tell ya bloody street address makes a big difference did a quote online and accidentally entered my street number the wrong way round and it was $250 difference rang and asked why and they were like could be closer to water or flooding or anything. Bloody hell live in a mining town 250kms from the water haha. But I'm with NRMA now they are cheap also Suncorp is good.

AAMI was my insurer for all my assets for 20 yrs. They went from $1100 to $1700 on the D4 over the course of 2 years having never made a claim. They did the same with my home insurance. I went with Allianz for the D4, the premium came down to under $1000.

We have QBE, $600 excess, unlimited windscreens and glass with no excess or loss of rating, all the options on the car are noted and the premium is $56.00 per month, I'm happy with that.

Considering AAMI is owned by Suncorp, I can only think they're trying to shift all the insurance business over to them. Some sort of corporate tax scheme, or something. :censored:

I just got cover for my new RRs HSE SDV8 Dynamic and after trying to get Sun corp to roll the current policy over they said that they won't cover the new car as it is not parked undercover. I explained it is parked behind a 6 foot fence with an electric gate but not undercover. They said they will only cover it until the current policy on my TDV8 runs out in a month and they I would need to be assessed by their risk department.
Went on line and got covered by budget direct with the extra's I wanted for under $1k

Insurance companies seem to feel they have the right to increase charges yearly, some seem to think that as a vehicle gets older the cover cost should also increase, this irritates me to no end, prior to retirement I did not have the patience to trawl though the net and or phone companies for comparisons. Loyalty, sure all that matters to insurance companies is the commissions and the extra earn they are able to generate. While trawling last month to re insure the Defender 2008 I encountered a couple of companies that said they would offer a discount if conducted online, the online comment was “we will call you shortly”, this did happen and the comment was, “you contacted us last year for a quote, why would you want to do the same again, the costs have now risen again?”. I might add I did tell them I have 44,000k on the clock and never in over 40 years had a claim. This led to a call to Budget Insurance with a $1000 excess, the quote was $357! NEARLY $500 less that Alliance and the major insurance companies. I checked the underwriters etc and have no issues with their cover for me. This email is in no way bias towards them only to let people know the scoundrels most of them are, they just don’t care about their customers, how easy is it to keep a customer you have rather than spend many thousands more to “round up new customers?” Common sense to me!

Nobody seems to have tried YOUI.
We have both our cars with them and they are FAR cheaper than the majors.
I think my D2 is $360.
I am retired , live in the Central coast, have no points, cars are garaged.

I told my 38 year old son to try them but they were quite expensive for him.
So it depends on your circumstances , but for old codgers YOUI is great.

BTW we had 2 no fault accidents in 12 months, one a write off on a 2006 Honda Jazz, and the other $8500 on another Jazz. Both were handled in an exemplary fashion , and The write off value was satisfactory and paid within 2 weeks.
We have now changed our home insurance to them.
I am a YOUI fan.

It still amazes me how many people get market value insurance rather than agreed value and then end up feeling totally sick when the insurance company write off their pride and joy after an accident only to get offered half of what they thought they had insured it for.

Latest as of this morning….. QBE came back to me with a quote of 1520.00 incl all the accessories and two year new for old, (couldn't get the 4 year new for old as i hadn't originally insured with them since new but no worse off then now) so a difference of approx $800 !! staggering. Pays to sit on the phone for an hour!
Thanks to all for the advice:D

 Cheers,
YOUI would not insure either cars for agreed value, but their market value calculation is based on comparable cars for sale on carsales .com.

I had great trepidation about this but the value of our write off was more than fair it was accurate and enabled us to buy a similar car including on road costs.

OK so i cocked that up,it is the Defender that is around the $400 mark.
As for the D4,Suncorp were $1371,AAMI are $798.
Standard $600 excess,including windscreen,driven less than 15K/yr.
Insured value of $65K,suppose not bad as it is nearly 3 yrs old,and it is the poverty pack.
As for YOUI,wouldn't touch them,it's a loong story..........

Just re insured with AAMI after shopping around and doing alot of investigation. Went back to AAMI with the cheaper quotes I had obtained on the D4 and they came down to $50 more expensive than the cheapest I could get it in the market. This meant they came down just under $200 and were $50 more and listed market value, it was worth it.
Just be careful with the Youi's and Coles of this world, whilst they are cheaper you get stung on market value. I would have gone with youi but they refused to provide a current market value and indicated they use redbook at the time of the claim. Difference with AAMI was they list the value for 12 months on the policy, whereas the cheaper guys don't and at the end of the day you can argue black and blue buy without knowing what you are insuring your car for in terms of value, you are rolling the dice within reason. that reason and redbook sees my D4 worth -$13k less than what I can get second hand for it in the market.....
When I went to agreed value with the cheaper companies they were more expensive than the market value guaranteed by AAMI for the next 12 months.
Not saying aami are the best, shop around but watch out with any company on the cheaper options and make sure you are truly covered as my neighbor found out with -$18k gap on his BMW with the cheaper guys and their 'market value'.
cheers

Depends on your circumstances. I'm with YOUI, having taken them on as they would insure me at "rating 1" based on history even though I had not had comprehensive insurance for a couple of years. They also were happy to give me agreed value (which in my case is a bit over 4 times my purchase price). I'm paying $1100 per year. Will look around after a year and see if I can get a better price with the same inclusions.

Hi, try Allianz, new MY13 HSE in Nov last year $830, I have full N/C and other policies with them. Strangely, CBA (the bank) policy was also very good, as others have said watch the fine (exclusions) print.

I have been with AAMI for many years over a couple of cars, but the D4 in particular for the last 4 years. It has been the cheapest at around $1300-$1400.
My recent experience with a claim (not my fault, driver ID'd etc), has left me with a bad enough taste that I am going elsewhere once it has all resolved. In short, AAMI's model of getting repairers to bid for the work means the repairers try to do the cheapest job they can get away with in the hope that it is passable to the end user. In the cases where it isn't, then the user claims the "lifetime warranty" and the original repairer then needs to pay someone else to fix the substandard work.
(In my case the original repairer painted the 2 doors without a decent colour match, repainted again but with dirt and tiny bubbles, had a 3rd go but only polished out imperfections proud of the paint. Currently about to be totally re-done, with a rental car and the orginal repairer is footing the bill).
QBE has a discount of 20% online for the same conditions to bring it to around $1000-$1100 with my choice of repairer.
I heard Shannons is also very good, but in my case it was a little more expensive than AAMI.

Just insured mine today.
The renewal came with agreed value $66,000.
Rang them up and changed it to $72,000 for $18 more on my policy.
It's all very well for the insurance companies to pick their agreed values
from what ever sources they use, but in reality if your car is written off you need to be able to get a comparable condition car in a hurry to replace it, and sometimes that costs you a premium if the only one available is at the premium end of the scale. I generally find the dearest one available like mine and try to insure it for that amount.

Just switched top Youi from RAC. $65 dollars less than the RAC renewal at $740 and 20% off the home contents policy, which amounts to another $100 saved on that.
On checking the market value of mine it's in line with what I'd go for on agreed anyway.
Just check the glass cover with Youi, it's at standard excess unless you specify you want a reduced excess glass cover. Some friends had their car broken into last week - only thing stolen was my sons school bag, worth about $80 with everything in it, but it cost them $400 for a new window!

I was just renewing our house and contents insurance and rang the insurer to discuss it. I'm insured with NRMA. While talking to the guy I asked about after market add ons for the D4 to make sure we were covered and he stated that they did not have to be specified and were automatically covered but to keep the receipts to prove they were bought. He also mentioned that they cover the vehicle for its intended use, that is, you're covered Australia wide while doing 4wd stuff off road and not only on sealed roads. The only caveat was that the car was not to be used for rallying or racing etc. If you have market value cover they take into account the value of the add ons. When I bought the D4 last year I was advised to take market value for the first two years as they do replacement vehicle in that time and switch to agreed value at the two year mark which is what I intend to do.

I'm with Budget Direct due this month $928, I have been with them since new (4 years) I had one claim this year where my wife hit another car in the school driveway. The claim process was amazing, just a phone call and then an assessment of the vehicle, I chose my repairer all fixed was the easiest painless process that I have ever experienced.

18th August 2014, 10:07 AM
I had a D1 insured for a number of years with ~ DIRECT when I finally sold the car I called to cancel the policy and noticed some fine print at the end of the policy.
The 2 lines of print on the last page of the document stated that the car was NOT INSURED AT ALL for any drivers under 25 - despite the policy showing that drivers under 25 had a $1200.00 excess on page 1.
The policy was completed online and this 'tickbox' (or whatever) was never intended or noticed at the time of taking the policy.
Beware the fine print on any policy.

Hi There,
I'm with APIA, came in this year at $781, called them to ask WTF was going on after I got a $600 quote going on line and getting a quote on the same vehicle, that was Friday, tomorrow I'm going to call SGIO and see what they can do. That's a $600 excess and windscreen, protected NCB.
Rok_Dr
19th August 2014, 10:17 PM
After a number of years with SGIO I'm moving away from them to the RAC. Started last year when the agreed value on my D2a seriously dropped. RAC's agreed value range is a lot wider and their premium was cheaper as well. So that made it a no brainer.
I've just changed over the caravan in the last couple of weeks. 20% cheaper with RAC, and better contents coverage. Only negative is $5mill rather than $10 mill public liability which I can live with.
Cheers

Im looking at insurance for my new Defender and QBE are only 60% the price of AAMI and CBA. $550 versus $850 / year. Seem almost too good to be true but i re-did the quote 3 times to be sure.
Does anyone have access or information on the offroad policy of QBE as i cant find the wording anywhere. I have also requested QBE but maybe someone here has the info handy.
Also, how did people go with contaminated fuel. Seems like a big sticking point for some people deciding on policies.

Thanks for bringing that up. I didn't even think about that and was about to changeover in the next month or so, so I have followed up.
The link to the QBE PDS is here (http://www.qbe.com.au/content/idcplg?IdcService=GET_FILE&dID=21482&dDocName=PRODCT002558&allowInterrupt=1), but it does not mention anything, so I called them on 133723.
The operator said "any road within as Australia as long as it is a legal road". I then asked "Does that cover damage on private property that isn't a gazetted road?" She then went away and looked it up to give me the proper answer which is: "Covered on any road Australia wide that is a legal road as long as it a legal 4WD track." As for private property, "so long as it is legal for the 4WD to be on that property." I also mentioned Fraser Island or Stockton Beach and she said "so long as it is legal for the 4WD to be driven there, then it is covered".
She did note that it is not recorded in the PDS anywhere, but if necessary could be noted on the policy directly.

The QBE web site quoted $496 for the full fruit(110), but does not know about MY15, silver pack or leather seats, plus $16,000 of accessories made its cogs spin. So a phone call on Monday, but a very good start.:)
