Hey Foxbat welcome first off and in reguards to these roo shoo thingys i don't know if they work but i know a lot of guys with them on and they swear by them but in my opinion you wont know unless you hit a roo or not in the time you have them on.

My personal opinion is they are a load of rubbish and detering an animal as dumb as a post like the kangaroo is, well you make up your own mind and at about $5 not much of a lose really.

I don't know how effective they are, however for the cost (around $5) you don't lose much. And knowing what damage they can cause it could be cheap insurance. I had the plastic one's fitted to my old EF falcon when I lived in SA, I used to do alot of driving from Adelaide to Sydney crossing the Hay plains I saw more then my fair share of the Skippybunnywallyhoppers, And even had a few close encounters of the **** your pants kind.

The Ef's final demise came at the hands of a tree with most of the credit going to the Skippybunnywallyhopper who had been thumbing a ride on the apex of a sharp lefthander. I though I had made it passed said hitch hicker when the rear right hand wheel dropped of the edge of the road and dragged me sideways kicking and screaming into a tree. The "A" pillar and the firewall wore the brunt of the impact other wise this reply would be comming from God's laptop.

My opinion Cut a hole in the roof were one of your mates can stand up with a 12 gauge shotty or something bigger kill the **** ing Skippybunnywallyhoppers before they kill you. Save the $5 for ammo.

As for God's laptop I hope he get's a virus....

Hi foxbat, if you are referring to the electronic type, dont waste youre time and money, absolute load of rubbish, anyone who tells you that they work is pulling youre leg, or they just have had good luck and havent seen many roos.
The deputy principal at work downloaded a full test carried out by a university on the Shu Roo because she was looking at buying one. She soon changed her mind.
Here is a summary of the test. They had high tech sound equipment and tested the shu roo at multiple angles along the road with the sound measuring equipment placed along the edge of the road and then driving the shu roo past the sound equipment, they found that the sound generated by the shu roo couldnt be picked up by hi tech sound equipment let alone by a roo. The only point as the car passed the equipment where the sound of the shu roo could be heard was as the car passed directly along side the equipment, when the car was approaching all that could be heard was the sound of the car approaching. They also dicovered from numerous serveys that people who have shu roo's installed on their car are more likely to have an animal strike whilst driving because they were wooed into a false sense of security by the shu roo, thinking it would eliminate the possibility of an animal strike completely, not so. They also tested them with in hearing range of mobs of roo and they didnt even react to the sound. If you searched on the web you would find the article, it will turn you of buying one. They are a total waste of money, save it and buy a good bullbar, they at least protect youre vehicle in the event of it happening, then drive according to the coditions, if you are in a high risk zone slow down, its cheaper. Dont be sucked in by all the crap you get told its all rubbish. Some people will tell you they work a treat and that they havent even seen a roo, i dont have one on my car and i havent had a close call in around 3-4 years and i drive on country roads every day, during the day and night. I am not calling these people liars, they are just lucky, its just a coincidence they have a shu roo. They dont work. Matt

I used to work for a certain Telco out west of brisbane, roos were a problem and caused lots of damage to VR dunnydoors, I will have to say after the shoo roos were installed, those vehicles recieved no more hits, make your own judgement

This is one of these discussions which will have differed opinions based on personal experience, i have never owned one, and after reading the test i wouldnt buy one, then again i am a science teacher and in my opinion scientific research wins. Then again, if you have one fitted and it works for you, the all the better. Its one of these things which cant realy be proven, i wouldnt mind finding out what product testing was carried out during development of the product. Matt

Driving through areas thick with roos you tend to see plenty siting just of the side of the road.
Whilst they are sitting there it's no problem, when they get on the move thats

It seems to me that when they take off in a mob they usually seem to head in the same direction, meaning some cross the road to join the scared mob.

Seems like letting them know you are coming is the wrong move.
They are not smart enough to avoid the road when they are scared.

Just my observations anyway.

I would agree with you 4bd1, I see people hink horns etc, thats the totally wrong way to go about it, roos are fine, as you say, when they are sitting on the side of the road, you generally skoot past them with out a problem. When they are close enough to the edge of the road to be startled by lights or by the noise of the approaching car the place they tend to jump is out in front of you, for some unkown reason. If you keep youre speed down and have good lights you shouldnt have a problem with roo strikes. Matt

Mum and Dad copped a roo in the passenger door of their car last year, it bent the alignment of the door, so the damage was a lot worse than it looked. The had it fixed ($1300 under insurance) and a few months later they wrote it off on a patch of diesel on the Bells Line Of Road, dont you hate that. Matt

The electronic shoo roos don't seem to work, the little plastic ones are a waste of money too, had then fitted to the bike for a while as i ride to work everyday and nothing changed. As already mentioned theres no substitute for a good bullbar and driving lights and plain old keeping an eye out for 'em when driving at night.

Hit the nail right on the head Olddog. As inc said, science is good when you cover all the bases. However if you miss or fail to account for one variable the experiment is as good as useless as, regardless of whether or not the results are correct, you cant assume they are due to errors in the experimental process. The test i read seemed pretty conclusive, however out in the enviroment where the conditions on each test day can never be accurately replicated its hard to test accurately whether or not the shu-roo actually work. As for whether people who have had them fitted to their vehicles, i am sure people feel that they are doing their job, wether or not this is luck or the shu-roo actually doing its job i guess we will never no. On the other hand i am sure people with shu roos have had animal strikes, again whether or not this is bad luck or the fact that the shu roo doesnt work, is again something we will never know. I beleive the test results, agreed there may be inaccuracies in the teast method, but i think the test more than proves it doesnt work, as it is supposed to do.
Whether or not you buy one then comes down to what you feel, do you think it works or not, as i have said above aswell as olddog and others, there is no substitiute for a good bullbar, quality lights and driving in a manner which suits the conditions. Matt

Not particularily near my place, i have a mate in merriwa and we go shooting on his 1500acre property and regularily leave after a nights shooting with a head count of between 25 and 35, plus numerous rabbits and foxes. Havent seen many on the road for ages, not since we got some decent rain and the feed in the paddocks keeps them off the road side. There are a few dead ones around though, the trucks keep the road clear for us. Matt

Nah, dont use a shotty, firstly i dont have one, my mate does, but we dont use it anyway. The rabbits and foxes just nick off before you can get close enough to them. If we went out during the day we might get them with the shotty (not the foxes, bastards are to smart) but we go out at night, if we are close enough the .22 is god, but the .223 is more fun.
