Looks like some one of the boys on 4x4community.co.za have found a way to blank the egr on the puma with no MIL coming on. From what I can gather they remove the gears out of the valve, clean and make sure it's closed, cut and blank the small pipe after the egr, clean the MAP sensor and then put it back together but with the gears still removed.

"What Dunelandy has done is he has stopped the actual EGR valve from opening by removing the gears. The ECU still thinks it is working as its still in place (The mechanism with "motor" etc) and if you could look inside while driving the "motor" will still be turning to open the valve....but because the gear is not there the motor turns but the valve doesnt open.

I think I'll have to re read again just to check, what do ya reckon? seems to make sense, simple and clever.

Good find. Simple solution :)

It worked in South Africa with their version of ecu maps. TD5s didn't even have EGR valves fitted for SA.

Very interesting read, thanks. Maybe there are a lot of other options as well, such as sourcing air for the EGR from the air cleaner instead of the exhaust, or directing the air from the EGR to the exhaust instead of the intake manifold. A bit of mucking around but the chukka chukka sound will still be heard.
But a re-map with the EGR turned off is still my prefered choise.

I'll have to google the Garman Nuvi now. Looks like an interesting gadget:)

Pete from BAS had a box which plugged in and emulated the EGR motor.

A simple plug and go.

Stopping the EGR is one of the first things on my list now that the car has come out of warranty. What are people's cheap proffered ways of doing it? I don't have the funds for a remap as there a few other things on my list.
I like the idea of removing the gears in it...

Will keep tabs on this,,, looks like a good idea.

I got a map from Gary at Alive that not only shut the Egr off but also the speed limiter! Waiting for my new map regard other mods. The point I am making is that whilst I agree it's good move there will be other mods to accommodate.:D

Hi Ozzy have you tried this solution for the PUMA EGR blanking? and if so does it work?

Yep i tried it, and for me, it didn't work. There was another thread on the subject somewhere.

To cut a long story short, I had two working valves, one which came as a spare when I bought the car.

First off I simply unplugged the EGR that was on the Defender. I drove around for a couple of weeks with no MIL. Then I removed the gears on the spare and changed over the EGR's. But after 3 cycles of running the valve with no gears the MIL light came on.
So i put the original back in, plugged it in and after 3 cycles the MIL light went out. I then unplugged it, but the MIL light came back after 3 cycles.

In the end I got a remap from Pete at BAS, with the EGR deleted. I then blanked off the EGR.
