After a break of a couple of years I'm now back in the D3 fold. Had a couple of experiments on the way back after selling the RRS. Trieed a Defender, that was a shock, what is this thing they call a key? This handle in the door you turn with a circular motion......... ah the window moves. yes got plenty of excersise. The radient heat off the transmission tunnel melted everything that matters in my wifes hand bag traveling up to Coral Bay, add to that the air con was two flaps under the windscreen. Not one of my best choises, to big a difference from a RRS.

Then got a P38, 4.6 HSE, had one before, loved it, found one at the right price, great, spent a couple of weeks fixing air leaks, got the suspension right and the radio broke, the silence then highlighted a few other issues which for me it was quicker and cheaper to buy a new radio and continue on my merry way. An oil change and a couple of new bearings helped. Got a really nice second hand exhaust from TRS, had four pipes out the back and sounded awesome, took the focus of other things that weren't as pleasent. Never did fix the central door locking, made inroads into this. New water pump, fitted but in the end found that the problem was a weeping hose so this was precautionary as it was really as bad as I first thought. For 228,000 klms the engine was mint, never missed a beat, no oil leaks, beautiful.

From when I advertised the P38 to the gentelman telling me he would have it took about 90 minutes, including the test drive. The gentleman got a great vehicle and by the calls leading up to the purchase from others it was priced well.

So onward and forward, first issue with the D3 posted above................:)

Can you remind me why you got rid of the RRS? I remember you drove it back from Sydney like I did with my D4 and then you got upset with it for some reason that I don't remember. Sounds like you have been going backwards ever since!


Good luck with the D3. That petrol engine seems to spin like a turbine and the one I tried was lovely on the beach at Mutton Bird if the revs were kept up, which is pretty easy to do as the transmission seems to match the engine requirements beautifully, at least in low range.

Hi Bob,
Good memory, I loved the Sport great vehicle, one frustration was I couldn't do much with it, easily, bull bar, rear wheel carrier etc then I got to te point that I was modifying a very nice vehicle to suite a very niche market for resale, so I stood to loose a lot of money on the off chance that somebody saw the value in the modifications done.
The water outlet on top of the engine caught me out, luckily I caught things before it ended in tears. The LH EGR valve crapped itself, it took me four days to get everything back as it should have been, I don't think I ever got the dipstick tube back where it originally came from, that job was a bloody nightmare. the ERG valve fix was fine and the engine ran beautifully.
I just developed this fear of rocking up at an outback roadhouse and asking for something simple to be met with a look like I came from the planet Zod. I then went from one end of the luxury scale to a Deefer 110, the change was a bit to drastic, that change didn't last long, this list was long. The Deefer was a great vehicle, it had its place, it just wasn't to be in my garage. My wife kept on reminding me that we weren't in the Army, fair call.
My D3, I'm now driving something that sort of fits in the middle for me, I have another brand vehicle that I now use for towing and visiting outback places, sense and sensibility had to kick in, for me that is. Oh what a feeling.....!!!!!

I know that Top Gear have taken L Rovers all over the place, however I don't have the same support network they have, yeap people here have taken their L Rovers to all sorts of inaccessible places with no problem at all good on them I say.

I love the L Rover marque and everything that goes with it, the camaraderie that goes with owning one will never be surpassed by any brand, my opinion.

So I now own a D3 and I'm hoping I do for a while longer, for me it is great, sorry Bob I don't see this as going backwards, I see this as going forward, I chose to buy another one, not buying a Land Rover any model is going backwards.

Welcome back Marty, (I must admit I didn't know that you had gone although I hadn't see you posting for a while) I couldn't see the post above on the D3 issue, will have to have another look.
OK found it, but I can't help much. As regards the transmission I have mine purged and all new oil put in every 50000 K's by Automac so far after 260000K's it is holding well, I did start to have "the shudder" but 2 tubes of Dr Tranny and a total purge a month later and it is just like new, have done 8000k's since then and it is working as it should

Good to see you are around I still get the occasional ping fom a media site that tells me your job status. Good to hear you are going well. Thnks for the info about the transmision, I was in touch with Automac the other days asking about steel pan conversions etc. Dr Tranny I'll have to look that up. No doubt we'll convers more, I look forward to it.
