There are any number of very expensive camp trailers on the market - which ae great BUT not if you have no dosh, like myself.
A mate oif mine has got an (ex-army?) trailer that he's doing up as a camper. He has even sourced a huge canvas tent for bugger all on ebay to incorporate into the design. If I can get some info/pics/progress reports from him as he does the build up, I will.
I was wondering if anyone here had built a camp trailer or ute top amper or similar :?:
How did you go about it ?
What did you use as a base (obviously need a trailer that won't fall apart off-road)?
Any and all experiences appreciated- even if you've just done a smaller job like a slide out kitchen or similar.

Vlad,
have a look in my gallery, I built the camper trailer from a Defender tub which was already set up as just a trailer.
That one is up for dale now as SWMBO wants a "flip out" and we have ordered a newie for which we expect to take delivery in mid January. At the moment I am constructing the slide out kitchen and roller drawers for it.
If you want further info I'll try to provide it in the next couple of days. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif

Yes I could.
Richard - what are the dimensions of the sleeping area ?
Why does SWMBO want a flip out one now ? I ask because I don't want teh same problem... style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Vlad,
The sleeping area dimensions are 1100 x 1900 (we sleep close together) if I hadn't put storage lockers beside the bed it could have gone to 1700 across but we didn't want that.
SWMBO is very impatient these days and likes to set up immediatly, the annexe takes around 10 - 15 minutes to erect and there are 4 poles and guy ropes to peg down she also feels that as we are in our middle years(?) she would like setup to be for her less strenous. Having said that I don't have a problem and certainly wouldn't have entertained the thought of getting a new one but you Know these women............better to keep the peace!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

In the process now of building mine. With 3 kids there isn't enough room to be busting out 10k upwards for a camper. So with a couple of donations from a good mate I am on my way... Kids will have the inside & we will have a roof top tent.
Base is a Range Rover, which means I will have spare springs shocks etc, should anything go wrong. I have a hydraulic over ride coupling so a disc brake trailer & all Land Rover camper trailer!!

I'm building a camper from an ex-army trailer chassis (Workshop), I am using a SeriesIII rear tub to which I will attach sides to gain height and top it off with a SWB SeriesIII roof, which is exactly the same length as the tub and it will pivot from the front with canvas sides and back, similar to the Ho Hars. So far the trailer chassis has cost nothing after selling off what I didn't need off it, the SIII rear tub and SIII SWB roof cost $200, so far so good Regards Frank.

Hi Vlad,
I built mine on a 7x4 heavy duty box trailer (25mm rhs sub frame) with a 6 ft drawer bar and leaf springs (no shocks). 500mm high sides. Disco hubs and tyres. Good for rough tracks but not really off road. I broke a spring hanger on a fast trip into Gove a couple of years back.
It now has a water tank and electric pump. Front box, slide out kitchen. Side door to get access to clothes from inside the tent.
Soft-floored canvas 16ft tent. DIY kit from Gosford. Went together real easy. Over time I have probably spent $7k so not really cheap but it is exactly like I want it.
Which is the real thing...because all the trailers I seen I would always change something.

I built a trailer based on RR Chassis with Aluminium 1 tonne ute tray, front alloy toolbox, jerry racks, tradie racks/bows (removable) spare wheel jockey wheel and retained fuel tank. Has override disc brakes and tregg hitch. Chassis sandblasted and painted with rubberised paint.
It weighs 500kg and payload of 1 tonne. This is the second one to this design I have had built. First one toured Aus 65,000Km in 13 months overloded with rooftop camper on bows. Did south, western aus, centre, kimberlies arnhem land and the cape without any problems.
I am not using current trailer and am considering selling. Looking for $2500 as It was professionally built/welded and is in as new condition.
Loc in Melb.

I bought a Track trailer, then added the tent top and built some drawers and a slide out kitchen. Trailer already had battery, water tank, extra fuel storage and spare wheel carrier.
The canvas was the most expensive part of the whole thing!:o
I bought the canvas complete with a whole other trailer (because the tent height suited the track trailer perfectly) and then swapped the hard top from the track trailer to the second trailer and ended up with an awesome trailer for doing odd jobs and carting stuff around as well as an awesome off road trailer that'll follow the 110 anywhere.

Sandgate Custom Trailers , Connaught St. , Sandgate sell a heavy duty trailer kit for around $750, 500 mm. sides, heavy duty axle, springs, with extras, such as 5 stud hubs to fit 16 inch wheels, extra long draw bar, all electrics, bringing the price to around $1200.You get everything spraypainted with undercoat, and the owner will paint your trailer with 2-pack paint for extra cost. The beauty of this trailer is you have the basic good heavy trailer, and if you are handy, you can modify it to suit your purpose. it may not be exactly what you are after, be could be worth a look, the owner will go out of his way to help, I've not long completed one for my use, and he was really helpful. Cheers, Bob.

One step close today........... draw bar tacked into position. Need to blend the chassis underneath, but happy with the progress.
