View Full Version : Toyo Hari-Kari!

All

I was over at Overlander and could not resist reading through 5 pages of where the 100 Series Boys are committing 'Hari-Kari' over their IFS control arm failures.

It is very interesting reading, you can literally see them lining up at the Nissan dealers...the death of the 'King off the road'!

Worth a look
http://forums.overlander.com.au/viewtopic.php't=21355

It was good to see that a Landy owner threw the grenade in and walked away to let them devour each other!

It is like watching evolution in fast forward!

Theres nothing like a feeding frenzy to keep the sharks busy.

Refreshing....... oh what a feeling.

I feel sorry for them....when the Series 3 Disco hits the road (or off) I wonder how LR will respond if (and most likely when) things start breaking.

OI -- the big problem with the cracking control arms is that you would think in a few years time they will fail all together and it could get quite serious in terms of accidents and litigation.

I think Toyota are playing a dumb hand...there is a lot of brand damage being done over a what I understand is a $700 warranty claim and recall. I suspect the problem runs deeper in terms of the whole IFS engineering and product development.

Fundamental failure.

The comment on the Hilux IFS being robust and reliable was interesting

I guess that Toyota have lost focus: "where do we pitch the 100 in the market?"

Workhorse or cruiser?

Having said that the investment in all the rest of the vehicle should require getting the basic engineering right.

They were not backward in also highlight some problems with the 78/79 series in terms of gearboxs 8O

I suspect someone is asleep at the wheel of the big Toyo. Good for LR, opportunity to make hay!

Its like Architecture (and I can say this because that is my background)

No matter how good a building looks if it leaks then you have failed utterly because one of the fundamental requirements of a building is that it provides shelter from the elements.

Its a good thing that Land Rover doesn't mention shelter as a feature.

Anyone who makes a 4wd and the front end falls off as a matter of course has failed.

Maybe Toyota is selling new clothes to the Emperor. 8O

saab had the same problem with cracking lower control arms.
now thats supposed to be a luxury vehicle which should never go off road.
you never realise how many of a certain type of vehicle are on the road till there is some kind of recall. we were getting control arms come in by the truckload.

now the defenders have some sort of recall on their brakes.
i received a letter a while ago to go back to the dealer and have them checked - something about losing efficiency.

range rover had a recall on the fuel filter bracket. it wasnt powder coated properly or some thing an may rust hence dropping the fuel filter which could chafe the hose and leak and start a fire or worsen fuel economy or something.

recalls are a standard procedure but definitely more fun on toyos.

What ****s me is that one guy said he would be interested to hear from someone who had actually exoerienced the breakage and not just heard from a mate of a mate, this is exactly how they hear of all the land rover problems, yet they are quite happy to believe those. This has been the best possible thing that could have happened, maybe the decrease in trust in the Toyo brand will get people into LR, after all the suspension in my Disco is bullet proof. Next time one of those dickheads says to me that he knows a guy who owned a land rover and it was back in under warranty 500 times, i will happily point this out. Its all fun and games untill toyo looks bad. I say suffer in youre jocks boys. Matt

lets tell them the truth why land rover dealerships are closing..........

they are going bust !!

they are simply not selling enough parts to stay in business.
and there just isnt enough profit in new car sales alone.

we need to support our landy dealers......im going to see if i can break my control arms.....

no cant do that , i got too much travel and rigid front end....damn!!

And there is a great network of aftermarket support that doesn't have "Genuine Land Rover" marked on it.

AULRO is part of that network. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

If their prices were more competetive with after market products, and the service was better, ie the salesman knows what parts he is looking for when asked and he can offer genuine advice and know what he is talking about, i will buy parts from my dealer. Matt

You caused carnage disco, they are hanging **** on rovers to make themselves feel better. I kindly pointed out that there is a letter in the Readers Write section of 4wd Monthly about this very topic, a cruiser owner with modified suspension had a failure 550km away from civiliseation, the total cost for getting out of the mess, wait for it, $12000, no i didnt add an extra zero by mistake. Matt

Here is the letter for all to read, i couldnt get the photo, i dont have a scanner.

<span style="color:darkred">Title- SHOCKED!

I thought your readers might be interested in my recent unhappy experience with my 100 series IFS. As you can see from the pic, not much fun (note pic not included here, on page 15 of Feb 2005 4wd Monthly).
I was on the Talawana Track (WA) and sticking comfortably below 30km/h when disaster struck. After a couple of relatively slight bumps, the front drivers side dipped and i thought oh **** a flat tyre. No such luck. The wheel was lying flat on the ground when it should have been perpendicular to it!
As you can see it was a bloody mess. I had to wait four days for the Capricorn Road House fuel dump truck to come and get me. I spent another week in Newman for repairs, and then scooted home. Not a good end to an otherwise fantastic trip. By the way, Lindsey Capricorn's truck driver, Pilbara 4wd Proprietor and Newman Police were terrific. It is nice to know such professional help is at the end of the Sat phone when you are 550km from anywhere.
What caused it? It seems the shocker snapped at the bottom eye, (poor weld by the look of it), which in turn meant there was nothing limiting downward travel of the suspension- great design! How about a lower bump stop?
Result: the ball joints ripped out of the upper and lower control arms along with the steering, sway bar and ABS wiring. Total cost for extraction and repairs: a tad over $12,000, which does not include accomodation and other incidentals.
I'm still talking with ARB, which supplied the aftermarket suspension, and toyota, which designed the front end so that all this weight can be taken by the shocker.
I thought it might give your readers something to consider when next forking out some 4wd dollars. It would be interesting to know just how many front suspension failures have been suffered by 100 Series IFS owners. Perhaps actual owners could drop me an email: jockmac@senet.com.au.
It seems to be common knowledge that there have been failures of the lower control arm, where the torsion bar bracket is bolted to it. I personally know of a failure the same as mine caused by the top of the shocker pulling through the top rubbers. This happened on the Anne Beadell highway near the WA border. Dont these things ever fail near civilisation?

Well I never, my mate has a hilux diesel, Dec 83 build, has had 3 engines (No3 rebuilt x 1 that makes 4), 2 g/boxs, 1 diff (rear) numerous axle bearings, most of the front body panels and the rear tray rotted out (aluminium tray now insitu), seats are st***ed, no leg room in the back, has done around 500,000k's big deal, my 110 County Isuzu Nov 84 (I didn't buy my 110 new it was 6 y.o. when I got it in 1990 reasonable service history with it, now 20 y.o.+) has 450,000k's original engine (had injectors serviced x 1) nothing else touched on the engine other than replace radiator hoses and fan belt x 1, G/box rebuilt at 300,000k's by Maxi-drive (tapered rollers on all shafts) windscreen replaced after bird stike, No rust whatsoever and looks like a dirty 110 Defender, people are amazed when you tell them it's 20y.o. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif I love telling them that I have Landrovers that are 40 y.o.+ restored and still going strong I only know of 1 toyo that was around when L/r's were doing sterling service down in the Snowy Mtns and L/r's dragged em around cos they couldn't cop it most of em rotted away anyway thats another story ain't it cheers Dinty
PS I love telling them it doesn't matter how much Aluminium you put on it, IT will not turn into a Landrover geez don't they react to that suggestion 8) 8) 8)

Dont they just love telling everyone about the problems they have heard of from a mate of a mate, yet when things like the land cruiser IFS come up and we kindly point out that the vehicles they have been telling us are so damn reliable and never need warranty work, all they can do is hang more **** on land rovers to make them selves feel better about them selves.

There is another letter in 4wd monthly on the next page of the letters section, it ammused the hell out of me cause the guy clearly has no idea, i sent two letter to them, from each of my emails, one nice one defending land rovers and another pointing out the stupidity of his letter

Here it is:

I just read the article about the lucky guy who has no problem with his disco. I just wish i could share his excitement. But guess what? Mine must have been built on sunday afternoon. Just a breif outline on the items that have failed; most of them under warranty so my dealer fixed them free of charge.

1) 4 new windscreens, as the subcontractor couldnt get it right and had to replace it at his expense three times- 15000km.
2) The front hub assembly needed replacing to keep the traction control, ABS and HDC working- 65000km
3) New radiator- 50000km
4) ACE failed and a tow truck got me to my dealer to get this one fixed- 90000km
5) Engine cut out at a water crossing the first time at 40cm depth- 25000km- the second time at top-of-headlight height- 80000km. The first time i could drive the car home, however the second time I needed a tow truck again to get me home. I had to pay for it too, as water damage is not covered by Land Rover customer assist. To take matters worse, each time i had to spend $220 to get the inside detailed. Apparently, water had gotten into the ECU and that caused the engine to cut out (well da). Well if land rover cant seal its computers, maybe it shouldnt stick them in the engine bay.
6) The rear air suspension blow-off container needed replacing- 80000km
7) The water pump failed- 100000km
8) The fuel pump failed whilst camping. This time for free, as i have the top-cover NRMA roadside assist- 1100000km.
9) While getting the fuel pump replaced, the dealer told me that my rear air suspension needs replacing soon.

The dealer has been great (now Purnell Motors, Anrcliffe). Most problems were fixed under warranty, and Purnell does its utmost to keep me happy. I just wish the guys a solihull those ethics when they were putting my car together.
I have never in my 20yr history of motoring, needed a tow truck to get me home. I service my cars to a T. I have gotten in the habit to get the tow truck driver to drop my car at the dealer on a sunday night, as my Disco usually fails when i'm miles from home. Guess what happens first thing monday morning? Sue the receptionist rings me to find out what went wrong this time. Thats service, but unfortunately for all the wrong reasons.
Guess what im doing now? What everyone told me 3.5 yrs ago: buy a patrol or Land Cruiser.

Now let me tear his letter appart, first of all the radiator, ACE, the hub assembly and maybe the water pump, he can whinge about I will give him that. Now for the stupid ones. First of all the lack of skill possesed by the windsreen specialst hire by purnell is hardly Land Rovers doing, or did they train him? The wet ECU thing, do I really need to go here, come on a the top of headlight height he is asking for trouble is he not, and buddy there is a reason why Land Rover Assist doesnt cover water damage, BECAUSE ITS NOT THE MANUFACTURERS FAULT WHEN THE ECU GETS WET. Now the fuel pump, all it takes is some dirty fuel, we cant really point the finger at land rover, unless it was land rover genuine fuel. And lastly the air suspension, the car has done over 100000km by this point, even 4wd Monthly said later in the same issue that air suspension on any brand becomes suss after 100000km, its called wear an tear, all suspension wears out. I think this guy needs a reality check, some of his gripes were genuine but others were just stupid miss directed rambling.

Well they are my thoughts any way. Matt
