pictures from raw to jpg (not Landy)

Hi Guys,

Bought a Cannon camera recently and the chap said to take them in Raw mode and now they want open on my mac.

So this is driving me nuts, i have a few hundred i need to change i have found some programs that will do one at a time, but need a batch done.

So please help.

Which version of OSX... and is it up to date?

Most likely it you need a newer version of Camera Raw.

I shoot Nikon Raw, and to natively read them in Windows I needed to install the latest Codec, OSX needed the updated version of Camera Raw.


The other option is to edit in a suitable program, Nikon supply one with the camera - I would have thought Canon would too. Other options would include either Adobe Lightroom or Aperture.

are the pics still on the camera or in iPhoto? if in iPhoto you should be able to highlight them all, go to File > export > and it will ask you what format and you can select jpeg - send them all to a folder on your desktop and then drag them back in once converted into iPhoto.

If they're on your camera, you may have to check the camera manual (or do a google search) you may be able to do it in the camera settings. If I take pics in RAW when I import it comes across as both raw & jpeg or you might be able to do it through the software that came with the camera, through Digital Photo Professional. But to stop it happening again maybe go into Apple or call them to see if there's something in the settings which stops them from opening.

Macs have digital camera raw support built in. Used by iPhoto etc. If your camera is a very, very new model it may not be supported yet but that's unlikely. 5.0.6 is the latest for OS X mountain lion an mavericks. If you have an older OS X version it may not have new camera support.

Best to use LightRoom or Aperture for converting Raw to jpeg.

You should only shoot in Raw if you are going to 'process' the photos on your computer after you have taken them.

If it is just 'happy snaps' you want, then set the camera to its highest resolution jpeg setting.

You should be able to shoot both RAW and JPG at the same time.
This way you only have to process files that need adjustment, and the JPG's will open with anything.
Lightroom or Aperture will do a better job

You can always use the canon software (digital photo professional) which came with the camera to convert them to jpegs. It also has one of the better file rename utilities I've seen.

I always shoot and edit in RAW, and just save the photos I want to publish in JPG. On my older Canon (40d) I found the Canon software to be fantastic and it did batch runs. The later version to support my 6d RAW images will not install cleanly. Was a major problem as Canon had enhanced RAW and the software providers were all slow in updating to the Canon new standard, threads galore covering this. I tried a dozen products, every suggestion on the forums and different RAW drivers to no avail. Just coincidently Adobe released a new version of Lightroom shortly after the release of the 6d which was the only software that could read the new RAW.

Everybody has caught up now and I am back using Adobe Elements 12 and happy, I used to use Photoshop but it just became too big and complex for my needs.

For doing long batch runs converting RAW to JPGs my mate uses DxO, I used it for a few years when I was quite active and if I was doing larger runs still, like weddings etc. I would buy this product. It also corrects the lens you use as well. Really comes down to how many photos you really need to publish. Nowadays, for myself (work for others is different) I would publish around 5 (or less) out of every 100 I take i.e.., the best of the best according to my perspective.
