The transfer case on my '97 auto 300 Tdi is making a noise. When I turn the tail shaft by hand it makes a metal on metal sound once every revolution of the transfer case.It seems to come from the large round piece of the TC that turns and that the tail shaft uni is attached to ( technical name?). At first I thought it was a tyre as I had not heard the noise until I did a rotation of the tyres, but no such luck. It is full of oil, probably due for a change. I am hoping it's just a bearing... any ideas?? Cheap and simple solutions most appreciated.

That big round thing is the hand brake drum. On the back of the drum, on what's called the back plate, At the bottom is a 17mm bolt. Loosen the bolt until the drum turns with no resistance and the noise stops. You will need at least one rear wheel raised to do this. If the noise goes away its a safe bet that the handbrake shoes are worn. You really need to physically check the shoes. That will mean removing the tailshaft at the drum and removing the retaining screw. Then just pull the drum off. If the shoes are worn and there is scoring of the drum surface you will need to replace the shoes and at best get the drum mechined.
If all appears ok replace the drum and tails haft then tighten the 17mm bolt clockwise until the drum locks and than back off until the drum spins with little resistance and you are able to pull up the hand brake lever between 7-10 clicks.
However, as this is a braking mechanism. If you are not at all confident get it done professionally.

Good luck, cheers

Nino.
