Well after spending a day looking at replacement vehicles for my venerable D1 300Tdi I've decided to keep it and upgrade to a VNT instead. Specifically the Allisport one.

I've trawled the customs site like mad and can't find an easy way to work out exactly what it's going to cost me. I thought I'd heard diesel engine parts were exempt.

Anyone done it before and know?

Once you go over the $1000 threshold, 10%GST is payable, calculated on the value of the item plus shipping.

There may also be a duty rate of 5% or 10% payable as well. If so the calculation for working out payment goes as follows...

Value of the item
+Shipping
+ (either .05 or .10 * [Value of the item + Shipping]) (this is your duty payment)
+ (value of the item *.10) (this is the GST component)

you may also be required to lodge a formal declaration (Nature 10). these used to cost $55 to lodge over the counter or you can pay a broker to do it for you.

If you use someone like Fedex / DHL, this will all be calculated and lodged for you. I would assume they will add there cost on top as well.

Fedex / DHL usually make the payment on your behalf prior to the goods arriving in Aus and then recoup costs form you at time of delivery.

hope this helps,
Paul

I imported goods over $1K that were shipped by TNT. When they arrived they sent me an email with a link to pay the fees. Once done the goods were delivered. Very simple really, the freight company will act as a broker.
