rocktamer style flaps for D4

Hi Guys
One of the jobs I was going to make for BlackBetty was a rocktamer style set of mudflaps for towing the camper trailer.
Would have been easy on the D2 as I have a DIY steel bumper.Anybody made or used a set on a D3 or D4????,to tell the truth havent even poked my head under there yet to see whats behind the plastic bumper.
I have a brand new pair of white truck mudflaps for the job,SOMEWHERE in the shed:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

Hi Andrew,

I went through the same exercise and did a fair bit of research, including asking other van owners what they do.

The main issue with the full length, bumper to ground Rocktamer type mudflaps, seems to be the restriction of airflow under the vehicle, and a resulting increase in the operating temp of some components. There also seems to be a good case for rocks still getting through to the trailer or van, and flicking back onto the rear window. The rear window was my main worry. I think the last price I saw was $1600.00.

I have just ordered a Stonestomper. It uses a suspended trampolene between the vehicle and van/trailer, and has a full length floppy mudflap, but it does not go down to the ground level.

Plus a stonestomper restricts the amount of dust that covers your camper as most of it goes straight under the trailer, same goes for restricting mud if your driving on wet tracks. They are a good thing, not cheap but a good thing.

Andy, there is a very goodstrong subframe that supports the rear bumper in behind the plastic as well as the towbar, you won't have any trouble finding something to hang stuff off.

Hi Admiral, I am in the process of getting a stone stomper as well. Talking to Christian from stone stomper it may require a clever mount for the back of the D4 because the standard brackets do not fit the towbar tongue. So I will be interested to see what the solution is.

Hello Andrew,

I fitted a Stone Stomper to my D4 and caravan before our Central Australia Trip.
It did a good job of protecting the draw bar, front of the caravan and rear window of the D4. It does not stop stones striking the under side of the caravan from where the Stone Stomper is attached. I found stone damage from about 1m after where the Stone Stomper is attached to the caravan.
I also found that small stones/sand/mud would still strike the front top corners of the caravan. I think the low pressure/vacuum at the rear of the D4 was drawing the stones/sand/mud in towards the caravan.

I fitted a slightly longer Towbar Tongue so the horizontal bar bracket fitted correctly.
Hayman Reese Tongue 21124, 3500kg.

I still think it did a great job and very happy with fitting the Sone Stomper.

????? I just received mine a few days agao and after reading that figured I better fit it now and see.
The L bracket appears smaller than those in advertising pictures. The L bracket is tight and the bar pushes against the plastic of the bumper. I'll have to drop the van on it and back sure there is room for the hitch tho. Will advise tomorrow.
If not, I'll just use a longer shank tow hitch on the car and get Christian to send another bracket

I have a variation on the L shaped mount bracket, as I am also using the McHitch auto coupler. I have asked Christian for a slightly wider base on the bracket, and locating tabs so it won't twist when mounted between the McHitch and towlug. ( the attached pic is my original lug )82441

I have changed the lug to a HR 21124 same as NTB, as the other lugs take the coupling too far away from the hitch receiver. Even the 21124 is 15 odd mm further away from the receiver than the LR recommended maximum.

I can tell you the whole bloody exercise is just getting too damn complicated. Hope it works after all of this.

I use a "Towtector" from the states. Lets the airflow through and intercepts and drops stones and mud onto the ground. nothing is perfect though and you still get some stone bounce and hits under the van but the front of the van and the back of the car are fine.

I fitted the stomper fully today, with the stock LR tow hitch.
Tight, but is clear, so won't foul.

My stone stomper fitted to Mitch hitch.

Heavy mud will weigh it down...a kick drops it all.

Echo Kavango.....very similar to the conqueror UEV490 but more refined, lighter because it's fibreglass over metal frame, no dust leaks.

I think because it's still early days for them. Once word gets out they will take off. Just so much better.
I had the only one in WA.....until one arrived this morning and is on it's way to Broome. Another one was ordered about a week ago.
I am the WA go to person for people to look at this model.
