View Full Version : 2.4 110 Clutch failing

Ive had a read all the older threads in regards to this issue and Im hoping to turn up new and current information.
Basically my 2.4 110 I believe is slowing starting to eat its clutch - Intermittent clutch rattling in neutral unless you depress the clutch.
It currently has 140k on it. 255's and a basic tune from BAS. My self and the previous owner drove/drive like old men on a sunday drive. I have never towed with it and I suspect the previous owner did very little towing if at all. Off road use is very limited at this stage.
If it is indeed the clutch has anyone found a more heavy duty option yet? I don't care how heavy the pedal is.
Also, whilst the repairs are underway is there anything else I should be getting done while its all apart? New flywheel? Wether things look new or not, Id rather replace them while its out.
If Im limited to an OEM clutch, what brands should I look at? Should I stick to LR? Im happy to spend extra for reliability.
 Thanks for any help.
P.S What would and auto conversion set me back?

Thanks Pat,
Does the new clutch have a better life? Also, assuming its shot a spring or two, is this something that needs urgent attention?

at 140K it has probably already had a clutch, unless you are in the minority. The current incarnation of the factory LR clutch is IIRC the 4th upgrade and should last....
I think the part number is LR048731

Thanks for that.
I did a search for that part number and there appears to be a few different brands, with LR being the most expensive. Is there are particular brand that is the best?
Also, should the fly wheel and any other parts be replaces whilst its out? Gear box work?

Would just a rattling noise indicate a spat spring or just springs that are getting loose? From what I recall with my MY09, the clutch rattled for quite a long time before it was terminal, and even then it was just nosey. I know they do break springs or the springs get loose enough to fall out on their own, but I always thought that was quite a long time after the death rattle started - the death rattle being the thunk thunk thunk when you switch the engine off....
So I wonder if you can just drive it like that and see how long it goes for - might give you a chance to save up for the fix..

G'day Aaron,
My clutch (MY2011) was basically noisy from new, and getting worse. When you depressed the clutch, it stopped the noise. I first asked for this to be fixed at 12K.
Fixed finally at about 85K, but I cant tell you which unit they used, one would assume their own  .

As for "what else you should check, I asked them to split the gear/trans and check the (I think it called) Intermediate Shaft. This apparently has been known to rust, wear and shed its teeth. There is no oil in the section of the trans, its like a void space between the two boxes, which the assemblers are supposed to lube liberally with grease on assmebly. Having worked extensively in this field, it would be lucky if the guys had oily gloves when doing the job :( , let alone smear copious quantities of grease over/around it :o.
So they split the boxes and found it to have some rust on it, so they cleaned it up, inspected it, all good and put it back. (Here's hoping)
At the same time, they removed the left rear axle and replaced that and the drive flange. I sighted these, and they were well worn

Now I have a very quiet clutch, and no clunking as such in the driveline. One very happy boy where this is concerned :D No more embarrassing noises at the lights :D

Hope this helps mate.

Thanks everyone. Ill just nurse it around until I find a super heavy duty solution and do some other things to it that I want done first.

Please see this thread, it would seem that the factory never bothered with fitting the extension shaft seal on the gearbox-transfer coupling: Puma drivetrain knock - 4x4 Community Forum (http://www.4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php't=194679)
Clutch on my 90 is 1.5 years old and already on its way out - my indie says it will need to be replaced at the next service.

And the clutch let's loose!
Driving along and I Goto change gears and the clutch pedal snaps to the floor and won't come back. I have to manually move it back and it snaps back again. Clutch reservoir is empty.
Ideas anyone on what's let go?

Also, is there anything to be salvaged by filling it back up with clutch fluid and hoping for the best? Or flat bed it?

Same thing happened to me: the slave cylinder is kaput and will need replacing.
It's a big job, since the gearbox has to come out due to the p.o.s Ford design where the slave cylinder sits inside the bellhousing.
the part itself is cheap, but budget about 5 hours of labour for the whole thing.
