If so, it was a 'behind the scenes' / history episode.

The one at four or five this morning. The debut of the new doctor.
It's being repeated tonight.

What! You didn't watch it?

I had a reminder in my phone but because the phone SIM doesn't work here, the phone was in the safe and I didn't hear the reminder sound. I caught the last few minutes but decided to not watch and spoil it.

I'll find it when I get back to Oz.

Have just come back from the movies to watch it on the big screen with my son. Will probably watch it again tonight. Not sure about the the new opening sequence though. As for the new Doctor - spoilers!

Is it just me, or is the new Who a bit off.........?
I mean, what is with all the lovey dovey stuff with Clara and the Dr.???
Every episode thus far, has had some sort of Love spat, with Clara having little Tantrums. It's like an episode of Coronation St.
Don't get me wrong, massive Who fan here, but seriously this is just getting a bit much. The last ep was the best so far, Orient Express in space, but it just got too soppy at the end.
I get it, Clara is upset that new Who is "old looking", but I/we? got that about half an hour into the first ep!
I like the new Who, good Humour and Witty, but bring back Tennant, or even Smith..........
I hope the second series will Improve.

I'd like to spend a bit of time with Clara! :p

I'm not convinced about Capaldi as the Doctor. I wonder when (if) they'll address his previous appearance in the series as the nobleman whose family the Doctor saves in Pompeii?

I have to say not impressed with Capaldi, don't know if it's his fault or if it's the poor quality of the stories so far. For a Dr who loves the earth and humans, he seems very indifferent to their fate as witnessed in the episode "orient express". Clara seems to have a far more upfront roll in this series. Not that I object to that. All in all not the best so far, but time will tell (pun intended)

She certainly was more up front in that dress she was wearing on the Orient Express. We won't discuss the difference between "role" and "roll" when it comes to Clara.... :)

But you're right about the stories. I said much the same to my wife. She now doesn't care if she misses an episode.

I don't see the relationship in quite that light. I think the comment below is closer to the mark.

That's interesting. What you have described as a weakness, I regard as a strength.

Remember the fish fingers and custard? Like the current Dr, that Dr took a while to get things straight in his head. In the earlier case, it was simple matter like his food preference. In the case of the current Dr it is his moral compass that is slightly confused. Fortunately he has Clara to guide him in what she considers to be the right direction. I don't think it is a coincidence that she is cast as a school teacher.

The spats or tantrums mentioned above are more about her disapproval of his decisions or his morality.

Remember in the promos we heard the Dr ask Clara if he was a good man and Clara's hesitant, non committal response. That is the key to the new Dr and his relationship with Clara.

I like the new relationship between the Dr and his companion. It is quite different from earlier relationships. I seem to remember that the lovely Leela often needed to be dissuaded from making inappropriate decisions. Now Clara has a similar role.

Clara was initially taken aback by the fact that he was old and there have been a few running gags about age in most episode. However, Clara is more upset by the Dr's judgement than his age.

I think that the moral or ethical confusion of the current Dr allows the scripts to explore some new ideas. I like it.

Capaldi is growing on me. No doubt they will flesh out the dark recesses of his psyche over the next series or 2. The show is still overly camp but it is just slightly less so than the last few series IMO. I read somewhere that this series is pitched at a more adult audience -I suppose because many Dr Who fans are getting a bit these days- but I would like them to pitch a bit harder in that direction.

I actually like Capaldi, the series seems to be more 'Darker' than previous ones.
Yes Clara is cute and hot. ;)
They still have pop ups which leave you wondering like the scene on the planet where Clara and the Dr and chained down and she says we will die of starvation and he comes back with the sand piranhas will get us long before that!
Also the 'Promised Land' where everyone who dies ends up in.
Whats with the Gatekeeper Missy?

I'm taking it that she is supposed to be god. I also think she is a little upset with the Doctor for some reason. My guesses anyway.

Not a massive fan of capaldi, I'd have liked to see the war doctor fleshed out.

But the episodes seem to be getting better for me.

I cant make up my mind about Capaldi, he seems a bit awkward and doesn't quite fit, and I have a problem with his attitude.
But it's early days and he has to find his way.
He has alot to live upto.
The beautiful Jenna is just slightly over acting.
But it is a documentory afterall.

PS: Got me new Silurian figurine yesterday.
Fierce looking bugger.

It doesn't surprise me at all that a few people have said that they aren't sure about Capaldi.

That is the way our minds work. It takes time to adjust to change. The new Dr is certainly different so having doubts at first is exactly what you would expect.

Clara is having trouble working him out, so is it surprising that we are also having to get used to him?

He's got some bite already... script had him totally un-moved and dismissive of 'collateral damage' in the Orient Express episode... matched the un-named entity who was running the event...

We shall see what tonite brings...

Any thoughts about the twist at the end in last night's episode ? (2- dimensional monsters) - Dr commenting on Clara's performance as 'Doctor'

Dr is getting darker, IMO

Loved it, great special effects and what about Gatekeeper Missy?

superquag
20th October 2014, 11:41 PM
Missy is a Worry... To be fair, the concepts of 'Deity' had to be explored one day, seeing as the Time Lords have such capacity to alter history, and this would conflict with Supreme Being(s) who may have a differant agenda to the Doctor...

Convoluted connection is likely, seeing as Clara is "Impossible" and Missy may well have something to do with her..existance.

It's on ABC today at 11:30 am and ABC2 tonight at 7:30pm. I have the recorder set to tape it.

In the meantime, if you want to see more of Clara (and who doesn't?), Jenna Coleman is playing a role in a series my wife is currently following, Murder at Pembury.

There was another Dr Who special, The Science of Doctor Who - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Science_of_Doctor_Who, not long back with Prof Brian Cox (not the BBC's executive Brian Cox in the previously mentioned programme) - this bloke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Cox_(physicist)

He's the first Doctor I remember watching - in black and white, then while he was still there they had the switch to colour.

Tom Baker is still my favorite though.

First dr who i watched was the original one with the old fella and the daleks. Been hooked ever since. Jon pertwee was my fav closely followed by tom baker as well. Loved the scarf. The last 3 drs who arent that bad either but i think peter cappaldi is an acquired taste.
