Leaky Transfer Case on my Puma

2008 110 that always had a leaky transfer case (especially on long drives) seems to be getting a little bit worse, (although doesn't leak while parked on drive) just sprays at bit back when hot. Looks to be coming from the front somewhere.

There are 2 plugs that look like fill plugs on the LT230. It's the lower plug near the PTO cover that is the fill level plug. A mechanic I used that was not familiar with LR's filled it through the top plug and added another 1.2 ltr of oil. The TFC was a big pump with that much oil and it was pumping out any seal that offered relief.

Get a manual and identify the correct fill level. Undo that plug and if there is too much oil it will drain to correct level.

Might not be your problem but I had the same effect you describe and that was my cause.

My guess is the intermediate gear preload has been too low which has ovaled the shaft hole in the front of the case. The leak will look like it is coming from the front where the box mates to the t-case.

Looks like I have a similar problem, loses about 50ml of oil a month. Kind of irritating, just a drip or two a day, not enough to warrant fixing, unless of course I an damaging other things. How difficult is it to fix the intermediate shaft hole ovalling?

The fix is to machine out and fit a steel sleeve. Only 150 or so for mr auto or any other machine shop, but pretty much a full case dismantle.

MR auto may be willing? Or ashcroft... but shipping may be a killer.

I believe MR do an exchange

The only downside to doing an exchange is the gear set ratios may not match the serial number suffix?
