Hey guys,

Well my new 2014 Defender is nearing 2000km on the clock, and I was wondering what the engine is 'meant' to sound like. I fully expect that it wont be quiet, but is it meant to sound like an old 6 cyl falcon with noisy lifters, all the time?
That customary diesel engine sound when accelerating, is what it sounds like, but a bit louder, and can even hear it when cruising at 100kmh. Is this normal? It sounds a bit unusual to me, but if its completely normal, than I wont mind.

What do you guys think?

Mine has done just over 3000km and has sounded funny from day one. I have asked the service guy about it and he thinks it's normal. I drive a transit van for work and wether it's due to more sound insulation, it sounds nothing like my defender even though the engine and gearbox are almost the same. My engine sounds like marbles being shaken in a can.

Yes, my 2013 was doing this. It just hit 20.000 and had a service. Im not sure if it had an injector relearn or something else but its stopped making the marble sounds now.

Injector recalibration is what you need. Had this problem with my previous Defender. It took 3 trips to get them to do it right. A ECU reflash will not fix it. I had to take the service manager for a drive and he suggested that it was a normal sound wasn't until i had my wife bring my other defender and we went for a drive in that did he agree that there was a problem.
I am wondering if a performance chip from bells would fix it. I may just buy a computer so that i can recalibrate myself.

Just reading this thread is making me fume. I have been to the dealer with my near new 110 3 times with same 'marble' sound.

I reported that it normally occurs as Im accelerating or in low revs and the rattle is down near the drivetrain (front passenger footwell). On the last trip they said they did a full ECM test and there were no reports of vibration (Im mechanic iliterate so not overly sure what they meant).

My main point was it WAS NOT present when I bought it, Ive only done 20000km, hardly been off road and want to keep my bus in good order as it is a keeper. Very frustrated.

I also have the issue which was discussed in another thread called 'drivetrain backlash'. This is when you change gears and the gear box feels like is going to land on the tarmac. Again supposedly normal but I dont think this could be good over a lengthy period.

Im aware of the anti stall device while changing and how gentle you have to be changing gears (people behind me are beeping their horns it takes me so long to change gears).

Saying that....I love my 110 and its' not going anywhere.
