So, Ive had my ipad for two years. Its been great. Recently the battery life has diminished and yesterday it finally refused to power up or take a charge.

I made an appointment with the genii at the apple store and they confirmed that the battery has died. Its a tiny smidge out of warranty. Im happy to pay for a repair..... but....

the genius (sic) tells me that they dont replace the battery and that my only options is to buy a replacement ipad of the same model, for just a little less than a new one, except they only have the 16gb version, which is useless to me, or, I just spend a grand and buy a new one.

Im reticent to stay on the treadmill of shilling out $1K every second year, so I guess I will have to look at the android offerings. Its a pain in the arse because my whole house runs on apple, (apple TV, various phones and ipods, ipad, Mac mini) and the only reason I stuck with until now was the fact that they all talk to each other seamlessly and I know if I go back to a windows based intel system I will spend all my time getting things to talk to each other, loading drivers, updating software and in the end half of it wont work anyway.....

Screw this.. Im buying an abacus.

We sure have become a disposable society - there must be heaps of these around with dead batteries.

I looked at this because I have an ipad that will one day die.

Apple claim they will replace batteries but your experience wasn't good.

It is possible to replace the batteries but the whole thing has to be dismantled and they are about the last item you get to after removing everything else.

He told me battery replacement is impossible on an ipad 2 because there are no screws and they just recycle them.....

Yep - one of the many reasons Apple is on my banned list, up there with Sony (but for different reasons).

Apple would like you to think that,

But iFixit sells batteries for $50

They also have how-to guides for replacing them.
(Certainly not easy though!)

I've done battery changes (and screen changes) on a few Apple products, and the iPad wasn't too bad once you got the glue around the edge loosened

at only 2 years i would be reminding them of the australian consumer laws...

a $1000 product should have more than a 2 year "reasonable" life i would think...

Agree with Inc - push them on the Australian consumer laws. Apart from that, the battery certainly IS replaceable. I a fiddly job, and if your all thumbs, you will break the screen getting it out, but it can be done with some finesse and patience . My screen is already cracked where one of the Pugs trod on it, so I'll do the screen and battery in one hit when mine dies - still well under half the cost of a replacement.

My Ipad 2 is well over 2 years old, and I still get 3 days between charges, so hopefully have a bit to go yet before it's ready for that.

Mines coming up to 3 years, still get 8 hours plus battery time.

If it lasts another year or so I will be very happy.

Then get a new one...

Yep I'm all apple here, I also like the way they all talk to each other when setup that way. IPhone's x2, laptops x 2 and 1 iPad 2 which is just over 3 years old. I still get over 10 hrs use, that's at home using wifi, a bit less on 3G.

I have always only ever re charged it when down to between 3 and 5%. I do have a problem with the home button being unresponsive, tried the usual fixes it lasts for a while and then plays up. I might have to bite the bullet and pull it apart replace it.

I have replaced several parts in my (dropped) iPad. I needed to replace the screen which O bought on ebay for less than $40 complete with tools to open her up.

The other parts (switch and 4G antenna) were me clumsy opening it up, and they were both less than $10 each.

Or take it to one of those phone repair places that are popping up in malls and they will do a battery swap. My guess for less than $100 bucks and while you wait.

It is just a LiPo battery and they do expire over time.

I hope this helps.
