I am looking at replacing a friend's rear axles and flanges on a 300 tdi 98 model. What are the best axles and flanges to use as replacements?
Paul.

support Australian made where you can. Hi-tough are every bit as good as Ashcfort.

Definitely go some form of heavy duty (probably around $700) - my first replacement set of standard $120 jobs started wearing out after about 20,000 kms which was mainly road driving - standards are a waste of money - cheap but you'll be replacing them quickly especially if doing any off road work :)

My Ashcroft's have been in for about 50,000 K's now (1/2 shafts front & rear + CV's) seen lots of off road, runs lockers on both ends with 33's (285/75x16 MTZ) and they havnt missed a beat.

Had them out about 8,000k's ago and they all look brand new, no wear to be seen :D

Do this, they are proven gear, try and keep some manufacturing jobs here.

265,000km on Maxi Drive axle's and flanges (now Hi Tough) and still no appreciable play.

They are good bits of gear, and the reality is you can't go wrong with either brand.

damn, im only at 260,000 km on my rear axles and flanges and only 150,000km on my fronts, all MD/Hi-tough...and they have been dragging a 2t trailer for 90% of that...

btw I only use Fatmax tape measures...whats your weapon of choice!

Probably, it also has a chrome case. Best tape measure I've used.

Add me in as another vote for Maxidrive axles. Even if you don't put in a locker, their shafts and flanges are an upgrade that's well worth it.

My standards were well on their way out, to the point where I was driving around with the tools to drop the rear drive shaft and just go FWD if I had to.

The Maxidrive axles in the rear are brilliant.

Bugger those newfangled plasticky things, they break to easily.
I had one for about a week, dropped it once and it broke and won't work again.
Returned to using the tape measure that I had been using for approximately 35 years....

Bodmann, I think it is manufactured in Germany?

Anyways, apologies to the original poster of the question for going off track...
Maxidrive/Hy tough axles and drive flanges, where/how can one purchase them online?

I know and have experience with Ashcroft, good quality, easy ordering, fast delivery, etc, etcetera.

Mike.

Mr Automotive sells Maxi drive and you can buy hi-tough direct from them

Email them and it counts as purchasing online.

They only need to know if your Salisbury has discs or drums.
