View Full Version : BEAR IS BROKEN!!

digger
31st August 2014, 01:00 PM
Went to servo filled Bear up
checked all fluids (as I do at least once a week)
Headed towards Adelaide and 10 k later Bear was sluggish
temp just under centre. No lights etc
stopped and checked under bonnet .. can hear the water in the hoses boiling!!!

Checked overflow and there was less oil in the water when the Exxon Valdez went down

So BEAR is now home and I called Lr assist
they‘ll collect him tomorrow and full lift to Adelaide to Solitaires to see what happens..

I fear the worst. so anyone else had this occur?
I have had all recall etc work done so hoses all appear intact..

what is the go..and how long does it take as I‘m pretty stuffed for a car while its gone!
(And HANS has no brakes at the moment!)

Very depressed at the mo..
(And wasted 4 tickets to Afl now)

This was about to disappear to page two of the general stuff. Thought I'd bring it back to the top. Probably should post this in the appropriate vehicle forum (110 defender I presume) to get tech assistance. Sorry cannot help you myself. All the best though. Reference to exxon was scary... :(

If Bear is a 2012, then at least he's still under warranty. However, oil and water together sounds head gasket-like and unlikely to be a 5 minute fix.

Bummer. :(

Can this be flicked to the Defender section in the pinnicles, thanks

and for info its a 2.2l, 2013MY 110.....

Wow, for such a new vehicle this is very odd.

Maybe have to scrounge the ford forums to see if they have had problems. Will have a scour around today if i get time and report back.

Im also replying to have this on my easy reference postings so i can follow your progress. Good luck and im sure you can scalp your AFL tickets.

Perhaps this is the best outcome! You'll get a new engine. Much better than a slight fault that lingers for ever and never gets fixed - like overheating on hills etc.

OK Solitaires have Bear. They've had a look and rang me this arvo with the verdict...

An oil seal has failed .. theyve ordered another seal. b
And will replace oil cooler. "Just in case"
Theyll also fully flush motor etc and service Bear also.

My Q is ... will that be enough? I assume if they say it will be all thats needed then it will
be ok... still nervous though...

Hopefully ok by tomorrow arvo...
Apparently this isn't a common fault..
they are being great ..apologising for any delay etc
even though none of it caused by them..

Cheers everyone!

This is warranty work i assume, therefore the repairs should carry some sort of warranty. Even if its insurance work they warranty the repairs so you should be all good.

So i guess just have to monitor the engine and if anything seems out of place, maybe due to overheating then take it back and say there is related.

What tests can they do to see if the overheating caused any damage?

A good result though digger.

1st September 2014, 11:44 PM
Hi Digger

I would get them to do a compression test and give you the results regardless of whether they are good or bad.

At least it gives you a reference point to know at where the engine is.

I wonder if a Laparoscope can be passed down the holes the glowplugs are fitted in?

Once oil has got into the coolant - I'd be concerned about long term damage to all of the rubber bits. I could imagine - perhaps I have too much imagination - that it would be quite difficult to flush all of the oil out of the coolant system, and that eventually residual oil might cause hoses to swell and seals to leak. Maybe not during the warranty period - but perhaps a few years down the track. I know for example that a miniscule amount of oil contamination in the brake fluid would eat out the rubber in the master/slave cylinder.. (Does that apply to the coolant system?)

And all dealers are programmed to automatically say " Oh, I've never seen this happen before - must be a once off" even if they have a forecourt full of the same issue.

I'd be on the phone to LandRover customer assist and get them to reassure you that any concerns are unfounded, and if they are so sure to put it in writing.

9th September 2014, 10:20 PM
So an update:

Theyve flushed and flushed, they replaced the oil cooler, (and were happy to replace all the hoses at my request - although I got the impression they may have already ordered them etc)

They have repeatedly flushed the system and the head mechanic isnt happy, so today they replaced the radiator for a new one... (thats 36,000k of locust and bugs gone :) ) they have reflushed it a few times again and run it again.
Mechanic is reasonably happy but wants car to sit overnights and be tested again in morning before theyll release it and truck it back to me.

I have been kept pretty much in the loop the whole way by Louis in the service department, if I ask and he doesnt know, he says so and asks and actually rings me back!

Theyre also doing the 40k service (lets be honest its half done anyway) and so all I should have to do is wash it when it gets back! (I had done 10 kilometres after filling it to the absolute brim so at least its fuelled up already! )

We are 5kms from town so Ive had a few long walks home after work at 3am in -2degrees (its invigorating!) I am sure that was good for me but I prefer that scenery at that hour through defender glass!

Looking forward to getting it back but as I said I believe Land Rover have seemed to do right by me here.

When we had dealings with Solitaires, we found them to be very good and also seemed to be very honest as well.
Had we not been so far from home, we would have left the car with them to deal with. Had I not been so stressed out and thinking a bit better, I could have actually made it happen.

Still, all the best with it Nigel, hope he runs well now.

About 3pm I was told he was waiting for a flatbed to bring him home.
Louis has emailed me a copy of work done and has put a copy in the service book in Bear also..

So I awaited his arrival expecting a 6pm type arrival.... Nope..nothing and
as they were closed at Solitaires I tried Land Rover assist who understandably couldn't help.

I assume they have held him until tomorrow (well today now) or the
towie has him loaded and decided to wait... either way now Im probably having to swap shifts to take the day off awaiting delivery.

On a good note though.... apparently they detailed Bear this morning just to make him pretty!

So one more sleep and hopefully all is good.

Bear arrived back at 8pm on Thursday night, the service guys had to chase the towies to get it brought back by then!!

I was trying to repair my tractor on Friday so didnt use him at all, and
this morning at 7am Nay and the kids headed off to the footy grand finals,
both the teams my lads played for are in the g/finals... the U13's needed to be there by 8am, car is ready (its just come back after all) its still full of fuel and it is dead set cleaner than when I got it (and it was good then!)
Off she goes, 15k later I get a phone call, "its done it again"

Car was sluggish, Nay stopped, temp guage was normal then when stopped up to high....

I took Nays car up and they went off..(By the way Wills team lost but Toms team won (undefeated all year) )
Mate came out and being very generous with his ability to share all the land rover jokes he could think of towed Bear and I back home... when I first got to the car on the side of the road I let it cool a bit whilst I waited for my mate (he was quick though) but when I tried to open the expansion bottloe it was still steaming etc, so I shut it... dont know it anything in the coolant.

I had to go to work, rang LR assist, they are arranging a tow, Rang Solitaires and spoke with Louis again, he sounded even more disappointed than I was that this happened, theyre arranging a loan car of some sort until Bear comes back... The towies (contractors) rang, "will collect on Sunday morning at 8" ," no you wont as noone will be here I leave for work the latest at 7.30 on days".... "OK says them, be there between 8 and 9pm", "OK with me" Later rang back, "we'll collect keys from you at work and get it on monday abt 10!! "

"Pigs arse says I (using a sort of work reference!) I would like it at Solitaires about opening time aso they get a fair shot at it straight away" We'll ring you back.......(that was about 1230... still no call back confirming times etc)

Anyway tonight I finished work at 6, and had CFS duties until almost 9pm...
get home, torch out, lift bonnet and lift bonnet strut "PING" "what was that??

The bit of plastic that holds the bonnet support in place when its down snapped in two and one part of the 'cup' shot across into the engine bay somewhere..

That was it, Ive reached my limit so closed the bonnet and came inside.
I havent looked at anything else, I am not sure I want to know...
I was keen as blazes when Bear came back but Im a bit jaded now for the moment... I realise its probably no ones fault etc but ...well... bugger!

At the moment my luck is such that:
if poo was money my backside would close up and grow over...:o:(

or they'd wait until the day after I go away for 10 days to announce they are giving gun buggies away free for a week ..

Mate, I feel your pain.

I didn't drive, and barely looked at my car for nearly 3 weeks after the window tinting debacle. And in hindsight, that was minor.

Gotta go for a walk down there later, so I will check up on Bear, and make sure he is ok.

OK, 6am BEAR went onto the truck with Shaun,
( Shaun is the tow contractor who has had all the trips with BEAR he is
becoming quite a dab hand at getting to our property! )

Cheeky sod offers to put "dial a tow" mudflaps on Bear as he has nibbled at the mudflap on now!! (I'm sure it was tongue in cheek.... I think it was anyway!)

I got a telephone call from Louis at about noon, there was a loan car on the way up (with "my towie" shaun!) and sure enough a flash looking freelander two shows up!. I got him to park it at work and finished my shift .

I come outside after work and some bastards been playing with the car!, the mirror is folded in... so before straightening that I unlocked the car and the bloody mirror fixed itself! (fancy!) I got in.... no where for key... put key in pocket, start car with "modern push starter" button (see its still part series in there somewhere :) ).

Try to adjust seat, no handle.... check glove box... no book, It took a full minute for me to sort my seat out ... Then the steering wheel goes up and down and in and out.... flash!

It is very "electrical' - a slight change from bear! Got home and parked in drive, locked car and the bloody mirror folds itself in, (so it can look at itself maybe? )

Louis said he will call me when he knows anything...

so the wait begins... I miss it already.

Its flash but I get nervous at so many electronics..

Phone call from Louis (whilst I was at a fire with CFS!) telling me that a sensor was buggered and that is what had caused the problem, should have BEAR back towards the end of the week.I'd love to tell you which sensor but as I was directing the effort on my side of the fire and trying to keep it from scrub, i didnt really concentrate!

Apparently they didnt realise the sensor could be affected, when test run etc it performed OK (apparently for the last time!) -- new one being imported and then (after more tests) should be OK!

Bear is resting comfortably in the Big Blue House.

I got a few strange looks, but gave his tail light a rub. Well, it might have been more like a tickle. I swear, he gave a slight little shudder, and there was some fluid underneath, that wasn't there before. :o Just for reference, it was his left tail light, wasn't it?

He has a blanket at night, and free run of the workshop during the day. The staff report he has being behaving, albeit, he does keep making a bit of a mess on the floor.

Oh, and Louis said they will sing the Goodbye Song when he leaves.

Thanks for the update, he would be very much the country bumpkin in the playroom there I would imagine.

Louis rang me again today, he has told me they are replacing a valve (yep I forgot which one again) and the heater core to ensure that everything is covered... That means that at the moment the dash is out (should have got them to run a power and a cb aerial coax through...:( ) and its all being done. They hope to have it done on friday but will look at a monday or tuesday return as they can then check it thouroughly before he comes back .

Phone call again yesterday, they still aren't happy with BEAR, apparently on the test run still sluggish but theyve dropped the coolant again and no trace of contaminants.

Whilst he's been there they took his dash out and replaced or cleaned all heater and air con in there to be sure..

So although I'd love my car back, I am happy they are not willing to send it unless it's fixed to a standard they are satisfied with.

And as Ive already said, Im being kept in the loop with phone calls at least every few days. That keeps me on side and makes it tolerable. So, disappointed in the fault but not in the service at this stage!

(and this car theyve loaned me keeps "pinging" at me (the lights are on, the handbrakes on, the seatbelt isnt done up, etc etc etc...))

Louis assures me they they played, "Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Big Blue House" as he arrived. ( For those of you without small people, use the Google.)

Been meaning to catch up with Bear in the Big Blue House.

Yes, I did tickle his left tail-light. A little bit of information to say that this was the wrong one BEFORE I did it would have been handy...

I do suspect that he is enjoying his time, and sent my own Black Beast in for a day to keep him company.

OK, they've replaced sensors, fuses, cables and valves but even with tuning, downloading, uploading and reprogramming they cannot stop the car from
getting to 3000rev and when sustained for a while it shuts everything into limp mode but keeps pointing in different directions as to the fault.

They've been sending stuff to Land Rover HQ and back and after a week of suggestions - they've been unable to fix it.

So today I've been contacted, Land Rover think it's gone on too long and have decided a new heart for Bear.

They have all the parts (incl new engine) already in Australia (that must be a first !) so hopefully next Friday with a new motor fitted Bear will be back.

I am a bit disappointed at an engine change but it will all be recorded via the factory and records etc but I 'spose I'm pleased at the fact they have gone through as much as they can and then moved straight forward into engine replacement.

As usual I've been contacted every time something new comes up and every 3 or 4 days at least to keep me informed, I certainly can't/won't complain about their customer service here.

Good to see that Bear is on the mend, after all that work it is just a well it was done under warranty and full marks to your dealer for their efforts in returning the Bear to full working order!

For those who are now driving that same year Puma and have since passed through the end of their warranty period, how would you summarise that list of fault events leading to the demise of the first engine and what warning signs should they be looking out for in case the same problems arise?

Go Bear!
