I vaguely recall reading somewhere that newer engines should not be roll started, but I can't remember the reasoning behind it. I had to roll start the Deefer this morning - I was running late, no time to jump start it. Can I do any damage to a TD5 by doing this?

Won't work if its dead flat though, needs enough power to fire up the ecm.

Not sure if it applies to land rovers but a while ago we discovered my wife's last Volvo had gone completely flat. Anyway, thought it was no big deal and charged the battery but it just wouldn't start.
Ended up calling the RAC and he asked me to use the central locking to re-lock and unlock the doors.
Did so and it started straight away. Turns out that using the key to unlock the door manually when it was dead flat did not turn off the immobiliser.

EastFreo, that sounds right to me, if you unlock with the key and do not start within a certain time frame NO GO either. Bin caught with that little sucker myself.:(

Maybe this is an option that I am not yet aware of?
Probably something they only offered in a range rover :p

Hmm - interesting.
I have not yet had the pleasure of a roll start in my Puma Defender - can I assume it is the same as most other 4wd and works best in high second? Or would high third be better?
