Isn't it Jan 2006 that they have to find a replacement for the TD5? Something to do with Euro polution levels?
I think a D110 with the new TDV6 motor would be the best.
Even a detuned version - so the Disco 3 drivers still think they are superior style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Even detuned it would still outperform the D3, as the next Defender just has to be lighter than the D3, which is apparently sufficiently heavy to create its own gravity.

TD6 or TDV6?
The TD6 will also be dumped in the near future - ending the BMW connection.
Come on, we cannot have the flagship vehicle with less power, in both V8 Petrol and Diesel motors, than the current Disco 3???
Watch the LR space for more powerful line up of motors in the RR - I'm hoping V8 Supercharged Petrol and V10 TDI Diesels style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

I really think the new Defender will be as important, if not moreso, than the Disco3 to LR's survival, especially in Australia.
If they get the Defender right, they will really be able to take the Toyos and Nissans on in the farming/fleet market. The only thing I cannot understand is how rationalising your dealer network in regional areas fits into this strategy??? :?
I reckon they need a bigger capacity diesel (at least 3.5ltr). Now a TD3.5 V6 would be a nice sweet motor! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

Well, if we look at this way:
2700cc in a V6 - thats 450cc per cylinder
therefore 3600cc in a V8 and 4500cc in a V10!!!
I know its not that simple, but just an idea style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif

1. I agree.
2. I agree. Also I think you'll find that regional Ford dealerships will become Ford and LR dealer 'centres'. For better or worse.
3. Mmmm, sweet motor. Mmmmm.
The only problem of course is price.
Mainly, the fact that I won't be able to afford one.

funny what you find when you're not looking for it... found this little tidbit of info on an auto site about future Land Rover models...
October 2008
Land Rover Defender - Approximate release date only
Land Rover will produce an all-new Defender by 2008 (codenamed L317), built on the steel ladder chassis that's dubbed T5 and shared with the 2004 Discovery. Comprising short and long-wheelbase wagons, the next Defender will get a 3.0-litre Volvo inline petrol six and a 2.7-litre Ford V6 turbo-diesel.

Hey Outlaw,
Why the fascination with big block diesels? - these are as heavy as ****.
The Euro diesels are far superior to the Japanese and American diesels - this is why they are such big motors to compensate for the lack of technology.
The best and most refined diesels - as in best power / torque to weight ratios, smoothness of driving, robustness are ALL European. Merc / BMW / Peugeot / Audi are all class leaders in this field - hence why Ford have an association with Peugeot for diesel motors for 20+ years now.
As most Euro motors are relatively small capacity they have to be more technologically advance - the acceptance of diesel in Europe is huge.
My mate in the UK has just purchased a BMW 3 Series Convertible with their latest 2 litre 4 cylinder TDI motor - goes like stink and doesn't cost a fortune to run (less pollution tax, car tax, insurance, fuel etc)
When Australia finally catch up with the burning of fossil fuels and altering the taxation of vehicle in such a way, then people may realise what they are purchasing.
But just my 10c worth.

sorry - previous post sounded as a rant.

But to add to the above, Why did International buy the rights to the old 300 TDI (powering Ford trucks & utes in America)?
Superior technology to theirs, but not good enough for the European market.

Who is making the six speed manual? Is it a Landy box or are they sourcing it from a specialist maker or the broader Ford family.

The Defender doesn't need a face lift. It needs a more powerful engine, an auto option, improved interior, safety. I see no need to "modernise" the look. If they did that they would improve sales no end.
There's not much wrong with it.

You are right RPM, to a certain extent. Whilst we love the look of the defender because we can appreciate the heritage behind it, there are many possible buyers who may respond to a more modern look. Now dont get me wrong, i dont want the defender to change to much, but a few modern styling cues and as you said a better thought out and more comfortable interior may increase sales immensely, oh and increase the range aswell. There will always be room in the ozzie 4wd market for a no frils 4wd because whilst vehicles are changing the country we are driving on still remains harse and demanding on equipment. I simply feel that a slight change in shape may draw the attention such a great vehicle needs, we need a vehicle which give people like 4wd monthly, ovelander and 4x4 Australia, nothing to gripe about. True, they are far better than the other two.
I am not saying change the square shape, as you say it is practical, and whilst some people might compare it to a house brick it does serve a purpose, for example interior mods are easier because things stack in easier. But a new slant on the square shape might attract some wanted attention. As they say a change is as good as a holiday. It cant stay idenical for ever. Matt

All good points, better seats, bigger power plant, less computer doing the thinking and more driver doing the thinking (ie no ex freeloader traction control, no gas bag suspension,) are all needed on the next Defender, a bit of a face lift could be a good idea also. The thing is that if what ever they come up with is not instantly recognisable at 100m as a Defender then it's not going to be a Defender....

There's not much wrong with it.
Had a Jeeper looking at the Defender today, wants more space!
Matt
All good points, better seats, bigger power plant, less computer doing the thinking and more driver doing the thinking (ie no ex freeloader traction control, no gas bag suspension,) are all needed on the next Defender, a bit of a face lift could be a good idea also. The thing is that if what ever they come up with is not instantly recognisable at 100m as a Defender then it's not going to be a Defender....[/b][/quote]
Spot on medic- Stick with the KISS principle- Keep It Simple Stupid.
Sorry RMP, dislexeea is giving me greef. Trust ron to be the one to point it out. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif matt
