View Full Version : Puma- dead on the road...

So Im having my first wait on the side of the road for a tow truck in my 2013 puma. Should I get used to this?

On the way to work this morning it "failed to proceed". It made a huge whooshing noise and went into limp mode. At least it **** itself outside the pie shop in Wentworth falls....

I can see the problem; the new turbo hose they replaced a few weeks ago under recall has blown off the turbo.

I suggested that they just send a technician with a screwdriver but they tell me all breakdowns require a return to the dealer... So looks like Im having a day off....

.. That's annoying.. My 2013 also had the recall done, and I've now got an annoying whistle which I assume is the hose leaking due to a similar issue.

It would be good if they employed competent mechanics wouldn't it.:angel:

I noticed the whistle under acceleration and was just in the process of commenting to my daughter that there was a new noise I didnt like the sound of when the light came on and we went into limp mode. Get it checked out asap mate...

Mine has done two round trips to perth for blown turbo hoses

The first time it went on a narrow tourist road. I limped up to a side lane leading to some tourist chalets to park up safely. Running late for the dentist I rang the 1800 LR assist and then the missus to come pick me up. Told LR the keys are in the tailpipe for the flatbed bloke.
At the dentist, mouth full of dental tools and the phone rings- its the local police with a complaint a stolen LR belonging to me has been dumped in a private driveway and is causing a hazard! Try to explain its not dumped just broken down and its not causing a hazard,
I leave the dentist and ring the chalet owner. The chalet woman has found the keys and moved my car! I ask he to put the keys back where she found them Big argument and she hangs up on me.
Get the wife to quickly run me back to the stranded puma, just in time for the flatbed to arrive. Car is unlocked and the keys in the ignition and about 50 metres from where I parked it

You could take a screwdriver and put the hose back on.:D
If I didn't fix my own Land Rovers I would of died back in the 1970s in some dark isolated location.

When its out of warranty, I will do my own repairs, including clearing the ecu errors that a turbo hose failure puts into the sytem

Would have been happy to reattach the hose, but turns out the hose had torn at the clamp, and I wouldnt know how to get it out of limp mode. Do I need to pack a laptop everywhere I go?

The good news is that the guys at Narellan replaced the hose no problem and only 3 hours waiting in their waiting room.

I'm currently dealing with the exact same problem. Faulty batch of hoses, or just incompetent mechanics across the entire country?

Suddenly I don't feel paranoid buying a set of silicone hoses for my MY15 Defender, less than a week to go.:D

Yep thats about it :D
Mine is on its annual holidays to get the intercooler hose - the first section out of the turbo - replaced in Canberra. (for the 2nd time so will be installing silicone as soon as out of warranty)
I must give it to Landrover Australia for agreeing to both deliver and return the vehicle to the dealer and back home again for free, Normally you as the owner if you break down within 100kms of home only get the pick up done, the delivery is your problem.
Well Im 270kms or so from the nearest dealer and pointed out that its a bit silly to pay all this money on a simple repair but they insisted and offered the free floatings.
This is the second time Ive had this service so Im pretty happy, oh, apart from now having to drive my 1986 Isuzu FSR11 around for the next few days.

Don't worry, it's not just our Landies it happens to. I've been driving a new triton for the last couple of months doing a job for a 'mate' 3 days a week. On 2 occasions, 1 week apart the hose between the intercooler and turbo blew off (turbo end) 18000 kms on it at the time.

Haha, as soon as it happened I knew what it was from being on these forums :D

Both times I reattached after cleaning the oil off the surfaces, luckily the clamp was on the subframe and not on the road somewhere. I then finished the day's work and drove the 100kms to the dealer to get the light cleared.

They replaced the hose and clamp and it's been right since.

I had mine at the dealer earlier this week getting the turbo hose recall done.
Turns out that there is a (presumably factory fitted) metal pipe in place where the recall parts were to go.
So according to LR, the already fitted pipe is a much better solution to the option they were going to install, so I was sent on my way with a box full of free 'recall' parts in the boot. Works for me. I'll fit the parts, or cross that path if I ever come to it.

Not only LR's,a mate had the turbo hose blow off has new Ranger twice. The third time he had a good look himself and it appears it had been fitted the wrong way around from new.The mechanics were forcing it on every time, not realising it was on the wrong way around.

So once again,if you don't do it yourself,it probably won't get done properly,or at all.

Is this an indictment on the new generation of tradies, or did the same **** happen a generation ago?

Had the side of the turbo hose blow out on my diesel XTrail when it only had 20,000km on the clock.

Not an LR thing mate.

Technically inept, tradies have been around forever. Its more apparent now because, in this case, motor vehicles are more complex and require specific methods and materials for servicing and repair. The techs need to be highly skilled
Another factor is, any tech with good skills, can command more pay working in the resources industries. With respect, there are many good operators who choose to work in the automotive industry, but from my experience there are many that are totally incompetent

I had a Disco TD5 do a turbo hose under warranty, lost the car after a flatbed removed it to a dealer for more than a week. Theb2.4 Puma just made it out of warranty, so on went a set of heavy duty silicon hoses from Gary at Alive tuning! I will also get round too doing the air box to turbo hose I don't like the look of its quality either. :D Pete Bell has them as far as I know!

Is this an indictment on the new generation of tradies, or did the same **** happen a generation ago?It happened to my D2 10 years ago as I took-off from the dealers where the techo forgot to tighten the clamp. As it happened where it did I got the techo to use his screwdriver rather than dig mine out of the toolbox.
