View Full Version : A Free Series III Station Wagon - My Dilemma

p38arover

I've been offered a 6-cylinder Series III station wagon for free - well, almost free. He wants the Fairey overdrive from it.

Unfortunately, it has been sitting out in the rain for years and has a bit of rust, some of which is easily repairable.

But having no experience with the prices of second-hand parts from places like Land Vehicle Spares, I don't know whether to accept it or look for a better one. The owner doesn't want to see it broken for parts.

On the subject of the overdrive, if it is removed will I need to buy bits to return the car to standard, e.g., gearbox/transfer case parts, new tailshaft, etc?

The car was driveable when it was parked. A parked car suffers badly compared with one that has been driven. Driving them dries them out.

To remove the overdrive and drive it again all you need is an original endgear (I think that is what it is called), and the cover to cover the hole. that's it. as for parts prices, what things is it likeley to need?? Most things can be found, but the price can be terrible for some bits, most are pretty good though.

I can give you a rough guide of a price of you tell me a part (i've got the 4wd's parts book in the drawer beside me  )

Thanks Richard,

I've decided (with assistance[?] from my wife) not to take it.

There's too much work in it at the moment. I'll keep an eye out for a better one or maybe a V8 110 County - I can't afford a 4BD1 County (would you believe a friend bought a 4BD1 trayback from a deceased estate for $500 - Five Hundred Dollars!)

Hmm, Vlad thinks evil thoughts then realises he's in the red having blown perfectly good money on a new shotgun, and couldn't afford the V8 despite the nice noises it could make.

Good luck Ron.

I had a series 2 with a fairey attached. The bearings were stuffed and it screamed like a banshee. I took it off and just put the cover plate back on. Never even thought about anything called an end gear, and the gearbox worked perfectly for 18months (then someone stole the damn vehicle)

I have never, and will never give customs people a hard time. The way I look at it their job is fairly routine, and as such they are probably wanting a break from that routine. I don't intend to be the one to give them that break.

Travelling around NSW a bit north of Sydney I noticed that where some people would have garden gnomes, others have abandoned Series Is.
