View Full Version : Ford Explorers don't float

Redback

The Wollondilly river claimed the Explorer on Saturday while out exploring tracks in the area the only downer for our hols  , it was the crossing on the return journey that claimed us in hindsight should have put a blind on (hindsight is a wonderful thing) but as we made the first crossing with no trouble didn't think it would be a problem.

The only thing at the time that was a worry was while sitting in the car while my mate Mick (thanks Mick your a champion  ) was trying to put the shackle on with the snatch strap, was the car filling up with water becoming boyent and rolling in the river as we were near a row of large submerged rocks and my daughter was in the car with me as well as the dogs, i couldn't open the door because of the current and didn't want to climb out the window and leave her behind either, Mick told me to stay in the car just in case, thank goodness nothing happened and we were pulled out in time style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif .
The car sucked in a gutfull of water style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif and it has bent a pushrod or valve and not to mention the interior is soaked, the water came up to the top of seat height what a mess style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif .
Sunday and monday was spent trailering the Ford home and then going back to pick up the campers both me and Mick have campers Ruth another friend came down from Sydney and picked up Micks camper style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif .
To my disbelief 8O it is covered by insurance so instead of thousands $450 excess style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Sorry to hear that Redback, sounds like it could have been a lot worse on a number of fronts!

What part of the Wollondilly were you crossing?

I know what it feels like to be the centre of attention at a time like that, lets just say you dont feel really big do you.

I know everyone is probably thinking the same thing so bugger it I'll ask:

Sorry to hear about your mishap Baz, good that the family are all ok though. Hope you get the old girl up and running again soon, so you can get rid of it. What a great selling point, new motor, just rebuilt.

Disco95 is spot on! I would be using this as the time to get rid of it, except they will be asking the inevitable question of why did you need to rebuild the motor and then they will get an understanding that it has been 'offroad' :?

Redback -- following on from our discussions at Ace's BBQ, have you and SWMBO decided on what the likely replacement will be? style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif

Hi Redback
Glad to hear you and your daughter and dogs escaped unhurt.
I think you will find your insurance co will write your vehicle off.We have friends who did a similar thing to thier 100 seriesTojo. They would have been happy with a motor and an interior clean but the insurance co said no.Apparently, they are open to claims on the gearbox/transfercase/diffs and rust down the track if you have problems with such failing.
Best of luck
Andrew

Shows how easily stuff ups can happen! :?

Glad to here no one got hurt though...(except the insurance company! 8O )

Which company is it?.... be nice to know who do actually help when disaster strikes.... rather than trying to wriggle out of their commitment!

Serious now, glad everyone is ok. The other fortunate part is your mate was with you at the time. As a point of interest a similar incident happened to an elderly couple at Bremer Bay about 5 years ago. They misjudged the crossing and within minutes the incoming tide completely swamped their car. Fortunately for them one of the windows (electric) was down because they lost all electric power and had to clamber out through it before the car went under. The car was a Suzuki Vitara.

There is a nice pic of a bloke losing his patrol to the tide in the back of this months 4wd Australia or Overlander cant remember, but it is ammusing none the less. Matt
