I can't seem to find any threads discussing the removal and refitting of LR long roof rails from one D4 to another (maybe no on has done this before?).

At any rate I am about to trade up to an MY15 D4 and thought I'd take all the gear off the outgoing one (bring back to 'stock') and put it in/on the new beast. This is easy enough for the Mitch Hitch, bash plates, etc, but not sure about the roof rails. How easy is this and does it leave holes in the roof track when these rails are removed? I assume the screws on the unit are the same and just get reused?

Are there any tricks/tips/pitfalls I should be aware of? Lord knows they are a pricey item and I won't get any more for the old D4 if I left them on her... Advice welcome. Thanx.

Unless you have the stainless rubber backed strips, which are normally on the roof until roof rails are installed, it is going to look pretty ugly when you take them off.

Removal is easy. Remove the allen bolts and the strips will pull away. If you can get the stainless trim strips off the new vehicle, they can be fitted on the old. The OE strips can be removed by using a trim removing tool, or a small driver ( if you are careful, easy to slip when levering, and you will have a nasty scratch in the roof ) There are flat headed plastic trim plugs holding the strips on.

If it is all too hard, send me a PM. I have a set of LR long rails I can be tempted to sell off.

thanx Admiral. I don't think I have the stainless rubber backed strips but the existing rails were fitted when I got the car. I don't have to make the decision just yet as I am yet to actually order the new D4, and hence it is 4+ months before I have to test out my abilities with a screw driver... It sounds easy, but maybe I am just being a cheapskate. Thanx for the info.
